Losing interest in video games....

Well, I suppose it had to happen one day, I just never expected it to happen in the fashion it did.  I am losing interest in games...

It's partly because following a recent trip to a distant friends house and sitting building Star Wars Lego for a couple of hours - I decided Lego was a lot of fun...

I've actually started designing and building my own custom Lego set, which while it might seem frivolous, is a technically challenging and interesting activity - if you're going order it as a set, you don't just need it to look good, you want it to be solid when completed and stable and have an accessible interior.  I'm blogging about the experience in my Lego Design by me blog now...

I don't think it's really just that though, I think it's partly having been on holiday and spent some time away from gaming, and spending more time with my wife and kids.  Going back to gaming after a break particularly to the games I have been playing lately just isn't that much fun, in fact it's more annoying than fun.  I tried to play Duke Nukem Forever for an hour last night, I want to finish it so can get rid of it... It's just not that much fun, it's frustrating, with walk in the park difficulty with occasional random silly challenges... The level design is poor in general, it gives me motion sickness and there are parts of the game which are trying tio re-kindle classic Duke humour but in 2011 are just cringeworthy.... I find it really hard to motivate myself to finish it.

Then there's my other current game LA Noire, which again, is brilliant in some ways - but just isn't that much fun... The most fun I have at the moment is playing Lego Star Wars the Classic Trilogy with my 4 year old daughter, and it's mainly fun because I'm playing co-op with my daughter.

I still want to play Gears 3 at some point, I'm burned out of music games, most other games I'm fairly bored of... I think Gears 3 will be the last chance saloon for my XBOX 360 playing, and if it doesn't live up to my increasingly high expectations - I'll be allowing the 360 to gather dust, while doing more adult activities such as gardening, cleaning cars and sorting through paper work (I never thought it would happen, not even 3 months ago.) and then sitting down at night with a cup of tea to build a Lego set....

You know, I kinda feel the same after going out with friends for drinks and stuff like that for two days straight and actually knowing what a legit social life is like. Maybe it'll come back, or maybe this is the perfect time to start practicing guitar.

Same. Not played a video game in literally months. I just can't get excited over them anymore.

I feel the same after hitting the gym and getting into a good exercise routine. However, NOTHING is going to stop me from playing Gears 3 or Skyrim.

"I tried to play Duke Nukem Forever..."

Well, there's your problem. :-)

I wouldn't worry too much about it.  You don't need to game everyday or play every hot title to still enjoy the hobby.  Don't force it and just play what really interests you.  If nothing strikes your fancy for 6 months, then so be it.  Eventually something will come along and reignite your passion for a while.  That should be good enough because, as you've discovered, there's more to life than gaming.  I don't game as much as I used to but I still like to follow the medium and every now and then I boot up something off Steam or pop in a disc.  For a few hours I wander through alternate worlds and then it's back to reality.  None of us should define ourselves significantly by our love of video games.  It should simply be a single element within a vast array of likes, pastimes and pursuits.

This happens every summer, when 90% of the games that come out are pretty much garbage until late August. You'll pick up a controller/mouse again before Christmas. Many times. However, if you're genuinely not interested in what promises to be an amazing holiday season, then yeah, maybe you are done.

Yeah I get frustrated playing other people's creations and it makes me want to create something myself. Can't only consume all the time. Eventually you gotta poop.

This is completely normal, man. I've gotten a bit more into video games lately, but I've been on break from my anime rush for over a year. Hobbies, interests – these things change with time. One day in the future, a game is going to be released that will rekindle your love for video games, if only briefly. Until then, though, enjoy Lego and enjoy life.

Meh, video games are still my number one thing. Sure, I dont play as much as I used to but if I'm not playing them I'm either reading about them or listening to podcasts about them.

All I can give you for advice is, if you have nothing better to do maybe play some games?

Seems like you have much more important things to do in your own regard.

Have you tried playing something outside your comfort zone? It's no wonder you grow tired of them if you only play the blockbusters.

I read the first paragraph, and what I gathered was that it seems as if you simply played too much games, and less of other activities to not fully understand what you view as truly fun. I don't know, I guess good for you. Personally, I'd say if you were married and had a child (which you do), you probably shouldn't have games as a priority anyways, but rather, have higher interests in things that take a lot less time to devote to such as movies or what have you.

Actually most of my pre-holiday game time was spent on an independant little title called Minecraft for the PC.  With that example, I built a huge freaking castle, a mine that went right down the bedrock and was pretty much massive, made a portal into the Nether, with a safe passage way to another portal for fast travel, built the cool easy things to make like clocks, compasses, maps, armour, tools - all that sort of stuff... Then went a bit... Meh... I spent a while playing Back to the Future the game, but I couldn't be bothered to buy the full thing... And I played the Warhammer 40K RTS game for a bit on the PC... I even picked up a bit of classic Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix... I played all the way through Limbo - that was a great little game, but...

Hitting this point. Been a long time since I've had an "Ah-hah!" moment with a game. Skyrim might shake me out of my funk. But It's looking grim otherwise.

Think I might drop out of gaming all together when the new consoles come around, whenever that is.

I'm getting there. Yesterday I had nothing to do and even though I haven't even started Mass Effect 2 (Despite owning it and all DLC) I just couldn't muster up the effort to play. I think this is something that people experience naturally as you grow up. I imagine this will last a couple of months before we get into major release season.

I wouldn't worry dude, last time I heard, I was fairly sure 'letting your XBOX 360 gather dust' while you 'spend time with your wife and kids' is not a bad thing. The older you get the more precious your time becomes, so I would agree it's wise to pick and choose your games carefully.

And also as a musician I would just like to also say that I think 'music' games are a complete fucking waste of time. So good on you for giving those up. Music games are about as similar to playing an instrument in the same way Tony Hawks 1/2 for the PS1 is similar to real skateboarding.

Games have to serve us. We can't serve games. If you feel like trying out other things, do it. There's a whole world out there. If you want to play games again, you'll come back to them eventually. I go through periods like this myself, but I think it's more unnatural play games out of a sense of duty or guilt, rather than letting them entertain you when you pull them up.

I also get the feeling that game design has been slipping in some areas lately, but I don't know if that pertains to what you're feeling.

EDIT: Also, if I were to design a lego thing, I would totally try to recreate sets from my childhood and order them. I tried to do that once, but either the computer was futzed or their part selection was lacking. Will have to try again, eventually. Will probably cost a fortune, though.

Agreed. Videogames are a part of real life too and I'd rather not lose my enjoyment of them, even if it means I start doing some other things.

No wonder! Duke Nukem is terrible, L.A. Noire is very divisive, and minecraft has gotten old for just about everyone. It's not you, it's the games. I'm sure you'll be hopping back on come Winter.

I don't think I would lose interest in video games so easily. Sure, my interest has dwindled since I started going out but it's still my favorite pastime. After all, it's the one way I end all of my relationships, depending.

i feel the same way, before last week i hadn't turned on my xbox for gaming in well over a month, bastion fixed that, i really enjoyed that game, and iv moved onto my Insanity playthrough of Mass Effect 2 before ME3 comes out, at this point im thinking ME3 might be one of the last games i ever buy, i think it will be a good jumping off point, the only other thing that im interested in thats due out after that is Phantasy Star Online 2, so ill see how this all goes, but at this point my lacking interest and my complete lack of respect for the industry nowerdays has really put the breaks on

i just want to point out that i have a few games im interested in before ME3 comes out (BF3, Skyrim, Deux Ex: HR, Dark Souls and maybe Space Marine) so that will probably keep me playing games well into next year

I highly doubt that very many people play music games as a replacement for real instruments. (and if they do.... they're in for a rude awakening) It's a completely different experience that requires a completely different skillset. I can play guitar then play Rock Band right after, and I enjoy them both in entirely different ways.

I still can't wrap my head around why people get so incredibly ANGRY (not you, in particular, you just seem moderately angry) about rhythm games. Is it such a horrible prospect that somebody might play GH/RB and have fun with it? Maybe enjoy their music on a new level, train their ears to pick up subtler notes/instruments, even buy a real guitar and give that a try? Gods forbid! Or maybe they have no interest in playing an instrument or diving deeper into songs, but they enjoy rhythm games anyway. Imagine... a world where some people aren't musicians... and all because of evil companies like Harmonix.

@smokemare: When it stops being enjoyable it's time to quit or put things on hold.

It sounds that like me you're getting older and you've been gaming for quite some time.  Chances are you've seen and played a lot of games and while there's always room for improvement I'm sure a lot about gaming doesn't have the novelty that it used to and as a consequence sometimes it can seem downright monotonous.   Why devote yourself to something you aren't enjoying and doesn't bring anything to your life at the moment?

Personally if I were you I wouldn't necessarily declare myself as being done with gaming altogether.  Take time off and see how things go.  You'll either move on or come back refreshed and appreciative.  Either is a good outcome really.

It sounds like your current place in life just doesn't have a place for it and that's completely okay. For me personally, video games have always been a big part of my life. At 25 that hasn't changed and I don't see it changing any time soon. I've outgrown countless hobbies I said I'd never quit but my passion for games and the game industry in general never seems to fade.

I have times where I'm doing nothing but still don't feel like playing a game. It's natural. Video games usually require a certain degree of concentration and mental effort, when you're just feeling bleh a movie or a TV show is an infinitely easier choice. The next week I'll practically go on a gaming binge.

It's different for everyone.

I did that before and actually sold my XBOX 360. It was a mistake. You will get the urge again. Its probably good to have balance in your life so you don't get burnt out and gaming remains a hobby and not a job.
