My top 10 favorite RPGs

Not to brag, but I've played a -lot- of RPGs in my time. Some good, some great, and some... well, not so great. But I thought I should, for once, compile a list of my top 10 favorite RPGs and the top 10 worst (commercially published) RPGs - the latter coming later. Of course, this list is subject to change, as I've yet to sit down and finish up both of the Witcher games.

List items

  • Simply put, my favorite RPG of all time - a large, non-randomized world that changes over time to explore, lots of risk/reward situations, high difficulty put this game at the top.

  • Despite the redundant name and rocky start, this is a fantastic open world RPG that still rivals most modern RPGs. Lots of side quests, lots of secrets and lots of loot await you in this game. Highly recommended.

  • Takes what Might and Magic 6 did and polishes it to a mirror sheen. Hands down the best post-World of Xeen Might and Magic game. Lots of dungeons, lots of enemies, lots of stuff to do - noticing a trend here?

  • Easily the wordiest RPG I've ever played, but by god, it was worth it. This was one of the first RPGs that jolted me and made me see that yes, you can actually have well written dialogue, characters and plot situations in a RPG.

  • This is a rather obvious choice, as it follows in the vein of the Gothic series - extremely hard at first, but once you get the hang of everything, it becomes a blast to play.

  • Fantastic, fast-paced, furiously frenetic third person RPG. The proper, true sequel to Divine Divinity (Beyond Divinity doesn't exist to me) - extremely fun at first, but tends to drag in the last quarter of the main game.

  • Fast, fun, and difficult action RPG - it's very easily my favorite out of the Ys series (Ys Seven being the second.) Extremely good soundtrack to boot.

  • For being a JRPG that essentially revolves around fashion and JPOP music, it does so many things right and does a lot of things I wish other RPGs would do - like setting the drop rate!

  • A woefully underrated game. An odd mixture of isometric, JRPG-style adventure segments and first person dungeon crawling that works.

  • While I was at first hesitant to stick a FF title in here, I started thinking - this game has one of the best class systems I've seen in a JRPG, period. The sheer amount of class/skill combination leads to a lot of replayability and party composition - which is sadly lacking in most RPGs these days.
