just some fallout 3 comments

I chose Fallout over Oblivion as my rpg for my new console.  It seemed geared more to my taste since I'm more of an action/adventure player than an rpg lover, and it was newer, just something that appeals to me when selecting games (why I chose Burnout Paradise over Revenge as well).

At first when turning it on and playing through the initial couple of hours, Fallout 3  did feel disappointedly like a kind of stripped down Oblivion.  I remember spending an hour just messing with my character's facial features in Oblivion at the creation screen, but it felt lame to even bother with it for Fallout.  I also kept sneaking everywhere I went once out of the vault, thinking it'd raise my skill, only to discover this game's experience doesn't work like that.  Not being able to be the "rogue", as I thought at first, bugged me for a while.

Spending more time in the game world has almost alleviated these issues though.  I've already grown more attached to the game world than I was towards Oblivion's, which I played more leisurely. I hated the main storyline in Oblivion and completely avoided it when I restarted my character, when I was playing it at a buddy's house a year ago or so.  But I like the storyline, and quests, so far in Fallout.  They feel compelling since they tend to have pretty big ramifications for the various towns. The voice acting is acceptable, some great characters and some irritating ones (whoever the chick is that runs Megaton's supply shop), but not any worse than it was in Oblivion if I remember correctly.

I'm also so attached the early weapons I've found.  My combat knife has become my personal favorite weapon.  I've had to use it more than a few times to save myself when my pistol and assault rifle ran out of ammo.  It feels more reliable than any of the guns I use because of that, despite the disadvantage of melee range.  Getting my melee skill up, in conjunction with my sneak skill, helped me be the character I enjoy playing as too, which was kind of important for me in any game claiming to be an rpg.

Other than a couple other comments I read about in some reviews, like Fallout having fewer quests and a smaller world, overall the game is very gripping.  I think I'll still get Oblivion at some point, like when I finish Fallout...

Fallout 3, or Oblivion...

I plan on buying one game from each major genre for my new xbox 360, and right now I'm trying to decide on an rpg.  I've already spent the money on some other games and want just one rpg right now.

I bought Oblivion when I got my xbox, but I found a store in Tokyo that sells Asian-region games with English text.  I thought I'd just trade in Oblivion for an English version, but then I noticed Fallout on the stand...and thought it looked cool, so I decided to wait a bit, read about Fallout, and decide which one would appeal to me more.  I'm not that much an rpg player really, and I love shooters/action adventures, so Fallout seemed like it might be better for me.  But Oblivion feels like such a classic, and I've read that it has a bigger world too and more replay than Fallout.  I did enjoy it, as little far as I got, when I played the Japanese text version (I just quit because it was too hard trying to read the text since I know only a little, and felt like I was missing too much...)

Does anyone have any recommendation for either game?

Checking Out Xbox Live Arcade

I bought a points card and chose three games based off of reviews I'd read - Braid, Geometry Wars 2, and Ikaruga.  The first two I hadn't played before, but I owned Ikaruga on the Gamecube.  It's still just as awesome, I just need to train my skills again.
Geometry Wars 2 is cool, pacifism mode being my favorite.  I like almost all of the modes available, except for sequence.  It's too long for me, but maybe sometime soon I'll try to last through every stage.

Braid, though....I sense it could become one of my favorite games that I've played.  There are some rare games Ithat stick in my mind after I've turned off the console and gone to do something else, and Braid is one of them.  Slowly unraveling the story, solving the creative puzzles, enjoying the fantastical/ominous music and atmosphere, and the amusing old school graphics and gameplay elements...I've just found it to be a really absorbing game while I play it.  I didn't think my new xbox 360's Live Arcade would be what I was most happy with, but with games like this it's my favorite part of owning a next gen console so far.

Picked up Perfect Dark Zero in the bargain bin...

I really loved the original Perfect Dark on the N64, so when I spotted this game going for only 1,000 yen (about ten bucks) I was pretty quick to pick it up.
So far, I've played through two missions and...I don't feel like playing anymore.  I had to struggle through as far as I've already gotten.  The game just fails to grab me like how the original did.  The environment graphics are pretty nice but the character models are a weird halfway point between cartoonish and realistic, the presentation/menu system is overly busy and cluttered, the missions aren't compelling at all...though I like some parts of it, like the physical aspects such as rolling to dodge bullets and using cover, it's kind of ruined by how plastic the gun fights feel, rather than exciting and fast paced as I remember the original's feeling. Overall the game feels very unappealing.  I know nowadays a game can age a lot in two or three years, so maybe that's all it is.  But I'd bet even with its archaic graphics, the original Perfect Dark would be more fun that this. I'm not too disappointed...it was just ten bucks...but I hope this heroine can have a better sequel in the future, if she gets one at all.  Perfect Dark may have been Rareware's peak game...they've since lost their touch, so I'm not going to let my hopes get too high though.

Taking my time with Prince of Persia, Halo 3 multi

Prince of Persia was the game that hooked me this Christmas and convinced me to drop the cash for one of the new consoles.  I loved the trailers I watched before the game was released and so far, the game has totally lived up to my hopes,  I love it.

Usually when I enjoy a game this much, I blast through it as quick as possible.  This hasn't been the case for Prince of Persia though.  It's become normal for me to heal one land, collect as many light seeds as I can get there, gaze at the vistas the game has to offer, and then stop for the day. It just feels natural that way, and because of that the game has already lasted me longer than some other titles with clocked play times maybe twice as long.  If I had to review the game and had to play through it as quick as possible, I could understand why the game might get criticized for being short and a little repetitive in gameplay.  But since I usually haven't played for periods longer than an hour...it hasn't yet become stale for me.  In fact, it feels fresh every time I turn it on and head to a new area.

It's my favorite game I've bought for my new xbox 360, but there's another game I've been playing a lot too...Halo 3.  Both the solo campaign, and the online multiplayer.  I've improved a lot at the game and now can manage to hold my own in most random online battles.  Especially playing with my friends back home in America...my favorite game type is capture the flag, I still don't know every map well, but I think it was the Valhalla map that was my favorite.  Great game, I get why it's the xbox's flagship series.

Learning to Halo

I have my first match tomorrow with my buddies in America over Halo 3's multiplayer.  I've only played the first couple of missions in the campaign, but I really love the game so far.  I'm totally new to this series so I'm still getting used to its style of gameplay.  I really like how well the makers balanced the team and solo portions of the missions.  I miss my other marines when I'm alone, but it feels thrilling too when that happens and I've got to take on hordes of enemies on my own, either because of the mission or because of a well-thrown Covenant grenade, lol.  Coming from Nintendo's camp, these graphics look phenominal to me. Seeing how beautiful this game is (and hearing that it's not even close to the Xbox's best looking game) makes me feel a little bit of ire towards Nintendo almost.  Anyway, before I get lost in that tangent...

I've been practicing a little bit with some random online matches.  I think I'm slowly getting the hang of it but the menus still confuse me a bit.  I'm sure the amount of options available will only be something I'll appreciate later on when I get used to everything and learn to play decently.

Well, I Made the Switch...

I chose to get an Xbox 360 instead of a Wii.  The game that hooked me was Prince of Persia, usually a series released on all consoles but this time the Wii wasn't getting one.  Since there was nothing else on the Wii this Christmas that looked at all interesting to me, I made a sudden change of heart and bought the Xbox 360.

I'm thrilled I did too.  I picked up Halo 3 and Oblivion as well as Prince of Persia (which I absolutely love so far).  All three games are awesome and I'm really happy.  Xbox Live is really fun too.  I see what it is I've been missing.
