This mission is absolutely terrifying, I'm actually convinced if Dan had run this one the series would have been over. Instead Abby pulls thru like a straight up legend.
I really hate where Prisoner of Ice goes after the first act, it's just so bland. Surprisingly short too. Shadow of the Comet is clunky to play but it feels really dense and rich to me.
One of my favorite games in years. It's a gorgeous Metroidvania with survival elements and as a thalassophobe it's also one of the most brutal terror experiences I've gone through. It's delicious.
Was frustrating to hear Vinny complain about not knowing how shit works, when the entire game is about figuring out how shit works. The game is about managing the unknown. If you can't find gold, then maybe you explore until you find some, and then you drop a beacon so you can come back for more, and then you realize maybe gold turns up in certain kinds of areas. You build an intuitive understanding for the world and it feels fantastic, I think.
I'm so bummed out Saving Private Ryan and its ilk have been allowed to so define the core narratives with which we portray WW2 in media. Indeed how the hollywood representation seems to be where everybody goes at the earliest opportunity, it's so damn lame and even disgraceful.
There are incredible WW2 stories that could be told from so many scenarios and points of view, and they really had the potential to rewrite the book here, but here we go again with the ol' American Best Of.
I love all these playstyles but the Abby episodes are my favorites by far. Any asshole among us can overwatch-creep our way through an XCOM campaign but the game is the most fun to watch when played by someone a little less hardened by it. When things go Abby's way the enthusiasm is just really infectious.
Stay aggro Abby! XCOM rewards aggression and decisiveness: Overwatch is a suppression tactic that is more about immobilising the enemy than killing it, and instead players are just pussyfooting their way through levels with their guard up. This is super lame. Just move twice instead of dashing so you can retreat if you trigger an encounter. I dash all over the place with snipers because they're all about position (once a sniper is set up they barely move) and run&gun with a good shotgun is one of the few guaranteed kills in the game and becomes ultra important. Just stick to high cover, don't dash but move twice, learn to love hunker down (which will turn any low cover into high cover) and you'll be ay-okay.
I adore this series, but I don't think I've howled out loud at decisionmaking like this before haha. I think Vinny's active presence is actually doing a fair bit of harm because some of the players ask him for advice instead of learning themselves, and Vinny isn't that much better a player from what I can tell.. That snipers still go largely unused, gear is taking so long to build and equip and weird research decisions like this one.. I get vocal. But I love this series and I love the game, I wish you all the best of luck.
Love this series. Wish y'all were a little (a lot) better at keeping your gang equipped. Seeing so many ballistics still in the game is maddening! Also please please when you build a game changer like cyber lab, at least have the curiosity to click on it ONCE. AAAAAaaaaaa
