Dave Snider sent out a call-to-arms just a bit ago via his Twitter account wanting to know what each of us would like to see in a Whiskey Media subscription service, and the idea sort of blew my mind. I know the community here has been discussing the possibility of such a thing off and on for a while now. I'm still a little iffy on the idea; I've never touched any of that weird give-them-money stuff that IGN and GameSpot have had going on for so long. But I have to throw some consideration Whiskey's way. This company is one of the most fluidly dynamic groups of people I've encountered with any organization within the greater media as a whole, and not just within the games press. They have been doing something genuinely unique over the last couple of years and I completely respect that. It even excites me that Whiskey Media could really take off and start a sort of shift regarding how people deliver and consume information, and it makes me a little nervous that there is still the very real possibility that they could fail.

The first thing I'd like to see from a Whiskey Media subscription service is quite simple: low cost. The problem with charging any site-visiting hobbyist any amount of money for web content is that dude, we're already paying for a lot of crap! We're buying games at $59.99 MSRP. Our internet costs us more every month than our car payments. We're paying for World of Warcraft accounts, Xbox Live service, Netflix, and extraordinarily overpriced AT&T wireless bills just so our iPod and phone can be the same device. Even the rich geeks are poor after all of these expenses, and the majority of us here are in college or high school, or working shit jobs just to get the bills paid. Money sucks, and so I hope whatever Whiskey has planned won't make in suck much harder.

My second pick is a feature I think the lot of us have been clamoring for since Giant Bomb launched. You guys need to get with the program and introduce HD quality to your video player here, and if charging me a modest subscription price every month or three months or year is what finally enables you to do that, then you have my money. It plays on my guilt-strings that I would rather hop over to YouTube and watch stuff like this amazing StarCraft II trailer in 1080p rather than service this site with an extra click. It would also do wonders for the fidelity of features like Quick Looks, where checking out the game is the primary objective of anyone watching.

Third, I'd definitely be interested in subscriber-only video downloads on Whiskey Media's original content. I think it would be all right for the downloaded files to be in SD, because we all know how expensive both streaming and offering direct downloading for HD content would probably be, and that alone might circumvent your subscription-collecting efforts. You might want to throw a brand-related watermark in the bottom-right corner (of the downloaded file only, not the streaming one) so dudes aren't throwing your videos up on YouTube or something.

A fourth feature that springs to mind is that paying subscribers could bypass the 5,000-point moderation barrier on Wiki Edits. This probably fits better with any new website prospects than the current line-up of brands, but I sure as hell don't even have 1,000 points on Comic Vine or Anime Vice. Getting past this limitation might spur more people to pay, and more people to edit pages. Then again, it could also inspire virtual graffiti all over your databases, so obviously this is one that would take require some serious consideration before implementing.

That's all that comes to mind for the time being. I'm anxious to see this company really take off, and I'm willing to lend a hand by whatever means my finances, waking state, or personal schedule (can I send you guys a portfolio and resume!?!?) will allow. Do this right and you've got my support. Do it wrong like, say, IGN of whatever, and you'll probably earn the scrutiny of many more users than just myself. Keep it clean, simple, and fresh, just like all of your sites are, and I'm sure you'll have done a good job.

I'm speaking more from the point of view of a donation, hence the use of the word 'contributed'.  And I would more likely contribute to the site, rather than have a subscription based model, especially if I got a shirt out of the deal.

I would buy shirts and stupid shit like that no problem. I think a store would be a great thing to implement, especially on this site. Paying money for an emblem or a new colored name or something is awful and splits the site between "subscribers(contributers)" and non-subscribers(freeloaders). I would, of course, be a freeloader.

I hope to god that the subscription service doesn't allow people to bypass moderation. Everyone should have to prove that they are capable of editing the wiki without doing stupid things. Giving people instant bypass because they paid for the subscription is just a death sentence for the wiki.

As @davidwitten22:  said, I would rather support the site through buying a GB hoodie. 20 dollars right there, anyone who wants the hoodie pretty much gets something in return. Plus, if they have different designs, that could easily generate more. They have enough designers, and considering how fast the Oscar Mike shirts sold, it seems like a great idea.

I'm imagining a quest that is finished by subscribing to the site. The image is of a hobo with a plaque: Ninjas stole our ads. Need money for funding, or something.

Why not continue selling things like T-shirts and merchandise and putting up Ads instead of creating new features on the site that the majority of users won't be aloud to use? The whole idea sounds rather dumb, I like the whiskey sites, but they don't release nearly enough content to warrant a subscription. Back when the P4 ER was going on, they had well over an hour worth of content a day on GB alone, but now its more like 30 minutes of quick looks and TANG (both of which are things I only sometimes watch). Then theres sites like screened and tested which definitely need more staff, those sites deliver great stuff and I wanna see more but Alex Navarro/Matt Rorie and Will Smith/Norman Chan already do a great amount of work so its hard to ask something more from them.

I don't see why whiskey media doesn't just hire a few more dudes on these sites. GB could easily get 2 more dudes to help them out, some people are gonna complain and say ''NO ITS NOT THE SAME ONLY JEFF, RYAN, VINNY, AND BRAD ARE SPECIAL!!111'' but I don't understand them, I feel like this site is only lacking in terms of videos/articles so why not get more people to help out. Fucking annoys me how this site has such a great community driven aspect but the content has not evolved one bit, and has downgraded in a sense. I want more video reviews from this site! What happened to them? Oh ya, I forgot there isn't enough people that can create them :(

I agree with pretty much everything you said. I like the idea that if you have over 5000 points on one site, you'll have that same amount on the other (which will probably happen anyway with the unified account feature.) However, I do not think that anyone who pay a monthly subscription can edit everything they like, just like you said. I've been using the wiki on Giant Bomb quite a bit, and let me tell you, some people just don't know what they are doing: poorly written, page formatting is a mess, and text is out of context. So letting everyone who pays a subscription ignore the moderators, wouldn't be wise.

Also, read the 3rd last paragraph. They are aware of what they shouldn't do.

Exactly please don't remove any features that we already get and the TC has some valid points. However, I am still opposed to this new idea of a subscription based plan, since it puts the site on the same business plan as every other site.

Your first couple suggestions sound great.

Your fourth suggestion: hell no.
If people get a bunch of perks for subscribing, then they also get to bypass wiki moderation, you're gonna get people who never really had much intention to add to the wiki, who are now adding to it. And without ever having to read the wiki rules on proper form and what not to do when updating pages, the wiki will just overflow with crap. The point of the 5,000 points is to let the moderators do what they're supposed to and moderate the submissions, denying all the crap that a lot of new users try to submit, while also giving them tips on how they should submit it. Not to mention how much of a "fuck you"that would be to all the users who worked hard to get to that 5,000 number. Can you imagine how many duplicate pages and all-around random nonsense will be filling the wiki? It would come in faster than it could be removed, and pretty soon it would just turn into a wasteland.

Totally agree with the HD video idea, as well with video downloads. The one thing I don't want is any of the features we have now taken away from free users, and made subscriber only content.

GB has given me hundreds of hours of mostly adless free content.

Have heard every podcast at least twice (need some background music when I run and older podcasts let me zone out a little still)
All the endurance run stuff (so awesome)
All the quicklooks

Honestly even if they were like yo click this to send us 20$ a year I'd probably do it.  A monthly fee would make me think about it too much though because I'm cheap as fuck.

No. The people who pay would get to talk about how awesome it is, and then the people who didn't pay for it would pirate it within a day or so. Then they would gat to talk about how awesome it is, and they would get to keep all of their money.  You can't put any videos or audios behind a paywall. The GB community is incredibly internet saavy, and would easily pirate everything.

I'd sign-up to have HD version of the videos and trailers for download. This is the only reason I go to Gametrailers is to get the HD trailers of games. Also i rarely use the iphone app, so something specific for that would be nice, but it kind of defeats the purpose since the app is now free.

Honestly, I have no idea. Giving enough exclusive "features" while not kicking the non-subscribers in the stomach is very hard. The suggestions that the OP suggested is a good start, and excellent ideas (except the wiki points one), but like so many have said in this thread; It's not enough to make the majority of the users pay a monthly fee for a website... about video games.

But I think I've got a pretty clear vision of what Jeff and the guy's vision are on things like these (well, sort of, at least). I am almost confident they won't make major features exclusive to subscribers. Which is totally why this thread was made to begin with, they want to see how the community will respond to something like this, and how far they can go without crossing the line.

EDIT:

You can do it now with firefox add ons. It's called DownloadHelper.

At the end of the day there is nothing that they can do that will not split the community in half and create a hatred for one another. The non-subscribers will hate the subscribers for getting content that they would otherwise have gotten for free, while the subscribers will be on their high horses saying how they deserve it because they are supporting the site. The only way to do something like this without hurting the community, and pissing a lot of people off, is to open up the store again and get GB shirts, stickers, mugs and dildos with the GB crews faces on the side of them in it for people to buy. As well, they can add a donation option for those people that just can't sleep at night knowing that they haven't thrown enough money in the whiskey collection plate and feel like they are committing a sin every time they watch a video and don't have to put a quarter in the side of their monitor or watch a dozen or so ad's before they get to see it.

Every six months to a year they could hold contests for people to design new shirts, and other items, made out of whatever the current GB meme of choice is at the time, and make the community feel like it's a part of the site by doing so while getting another stream of revenue. There are a lot of things they could do besides forcing a subscription on the site and starting a civil war amongst the community. Whether or not they do it is up to them, I just hope they make the correct choice and don't screw up this site with pay gates of any kind.

The biggest problem with with a subscription service is "added value", in other words, what does a subscription service add more than a normal "membership"? Ease of use is probably the first thing that comes to mind.

  •  Unified inboxes.
  • Video hosting / upload service.
  • @giantbomb email adress.
  • Early beta code access.
  • Merchandising priority.

Just a few ideas. I probably have a few more ideas (bypass slow mode chat on the streams, TNT stuff), but even more than my earlier suggestions, they bypass that annoying "feasability" constraint, considering the current Justin.tv, Xbox Live / PSN, Internet Dickwad Theory.

There are only so many hours in the day. Time spent making content for subscribers would mean less time to make content for non subscribers. That would mean less new content then before the system was implemented for people who will not pay. People who did not subscribe would miss out on the volume of content they would have seen if no for-pay system had been put in place.

How about access to dedicated servers for things like TF2 (of course this would mean they would setup those servers)?
Maybe something about HD livestreams (and justin.tv for everyone that isn't a subscriber) Not sure what the point of not ripping livestreams would be.  HD videos are bound to not work because then people would somehow get torrent access to them (improbable-yes, still possible though).  It would also allow subscribers to get an experience with theoretically less lag.

" The biggest problem with with a subscription service is "added value", in other words, what does a subscription service add more than a normal "membership"? Ease of use is probably the first thing that comes to mind.

  •  Unified inboxes.
  • Video hosting / upload service.
  • @giantbomb email adress.
  • Early beta code access.
  • Merchandising priority.

Just a few ideas. I probably have a few more ideas (bypass slow mode chat on the streams, TNT stuff), but even more than my earlier suggestions, they bypass that annoying "feasability" constraint, considering the current Justin.tv, Xbox Live / PSN, Internet Dickwad Theory.

no user videos.
I'll will personally burn down the new and the old giant bomb offices, if I ever came to this site and saw user videos.

Agreed.  I would just create a new whiskey website ( streamed.com ?) if I wanted user videos...

The ability to watch and download TANG or Endurance Run in HD would be enough for me to pay.

Well it could be better quality videos than the non HD-youtube vids(I'm still waiting for a pure html5 site and I don't really like how the html5 youtube beta works)

I'd rather it remain free, but would totally pay for other sorts of products. Like I bought the Giantbomb application for the Iphone, when I really didn't need it. I wanted to support the guys. If it's stuff like that I'll pay no problems. However year long subscriptions, or worse, monthly subscriptions are a harder sell, and it will really have to depend on what the content is.
