2019 Games

  • [Switch] This game blew me away initially as something of a medieval spiritual successor to Advance Wars. It's got a ton of flavor and likable characters, as well as tons of variety in maps and unit combinations. Sometimes it feels like a giant chess game that I've lost 10-15 turns before actually losing, which can be frustrating, but that's something inherent to this type of game, I think. Just like a Starcraft or Warcraft, if your units are caught out and you lose a bunch of resources, it's hard to recover.

Overall, I love this game, and I love playing by correspondence with friends. We use the pointing finger emoji 👉 to convey when we're done with our turns, and it works well enough. Would be great if they built it into the game somehow, but not sure how they'd do this cross-platform. Also this game is cross-platform! Which is a really nice, as I do play with someone on PC.

  • [Switch] I am not good at Tetris, but this is so unique and fun with the little time I've spent with it. Glad it exists.

  • [PC] I think Apex caught a LOT of people by surprise, and I'm no exception. I never played Titanfall 2, but now I know I need to if it feels anything like playing Apex Legends. This game has taken the spot that Overwatch held for a solid 3 years as the multiplayer shooter I'd always come back to when I wanted to play a fun shooter. I already liked battle royale games like PUBG and I'd played a bit of Fortnite, but Apex stole their thunder with ease.

This is definitely my favorite shooter of the year and my favorite of the battle royale games out there right now.

  • [PC] Earlier this year I visited Iron Galaxy in downtown Chicago, and where I had played games like Divekick and some of their ports in the past, I never got around to Videoball. Where I haven't had the pleasure of playing against a human opponent, I thoroughly enjoyed a couple hours of the single player this year. It's another game that has intuitive mechanics that make it easy to jump in quickly, but they also go deep enough that I can see high-level play getting really interesting. I'd be happy to play a round of this against anyone, any time.

  • [PS3] I didn't even know they made a PS3 version of this game until early this year and bought this on a whim. I've only played a few hours, but intend to get back in and play soon to experience this game to the fullest. It's got so much style and simply oozes character.

  • [Switch] Got convinced to buy this, and I'm happy I was. However, I did not finish it as it isn't the most *engaging* game of those I've played this year. But, it's cute and unique.

  • [PS3] DANG. What a weird, beautiful thing this game is. Like, can you believe they basically lifted the mechanics of Risk of Rain, a 2D game, and just made a 3D game that feels almost exactly the same and completely different at the same time? I mean, it's wild.

I haven't spent much time with this outside the couple dozen runs I did with a friend early on, but I plan to play lots more.

  • [PC] I've continued playing this since December 2018. It's been almost a year since they released in Early Access on the Epic Games Store and they have continued to deliver super interesting, game-changing updates regularly throughout 2019. I look forward to each update.

I "beat" the game at each stage of development as they went on adding new zones and bosses. They now have it to where you can escape Hades (the core mission in the story), and I have yet to do so, but I'm kinda glad I'm still banging my head against this game. It's good enough and plays well enough that I'll happily lose again and again to experience a new way to play each time (this is a roguelike, of course).

Can't wait til the 1.0 release so some of my friends can jump in and experience how great the fourth entry from Supergiant Games is.

  • [PC]

  • [Switch] Despite the load times, it's a lovingly crafted remaster of a game I grew up playing with a particular group of family friends. I'll always cherish this game and I love how little they've touched it aside from adding a few optional things here and there. I'll look forward to playing more online with my dad in the months and years to come.

  • [Switch]

  • [Switch]

  • [PC] I haven't completed it yet, but I WILL. This game takes challenging platforming, which is not my preferred type of game, and wraps it up in a very pleasant package with memorable characters and settings. It'll be enough to push me through the whole game, I have no doubt. Music is spot on as well - truly a league of its own.

  • [Switch] Hard to say more about this than the internet has already said, but this game is simply delightful. I was into it as soon as I saw the concept in a trailer, and I was only more and more impressed/surprised as I played through the game. The best surprise? That I was able to enjoy it with folks who don't play many games at all. Completed most of the game's goals while swapping the controller back and forth. Loved every minute with this game.

  • [Switch - Shield] It's Pokemon, right? While I enjoy some of the new gimmicks, it really is just more of the same. The story, like Sun and Moon, is hot garbage, though surrounded by some well-designed characters and settings. It's a junk food story - looks good, tastes good at first, but leaves you feeling perhaps emptier than before you even indulged. My biggest highlights from this game are the music, the new Galar Pokemon designs, and the inclusion of a more open area in the game.

It's a step closer to, as others have coined, "The Pokemon Dream," which is an improbable Pokemon game that includes perfect new Pokemon living in a lush, high-fidelity world as a backdrop for a perfect storyline with perfect characters, with perfect matchmaking and convenient competitive play to boot.

Not saying it won't happen, but it seems there's always gonna be some aspect that doesn't get the full attention of the developers making Pokemon.

  • [Switch] I've played these in the past, but never owned one. Perhaps predictably, it has been a hit at every party and family get together I've attended this year. Quiplash 2 is definitely the best, but Trivia Murder Party, Tee KO, and Guesspionage all very much have their place. Fakin' It has potential, but you definitely gotta have the right crowd for that one in my experience.

  • [Switch] This was a fun, quick experience. I really like the direction the developer is going for this sequel to Undertale, and I'm super curious to see what comes next.

  • [PC] Got this as a gift from a friend! It's really fun, though entirely overwhelming as I have not played since Civ IV. I really need to relearn how this game works.

  • [PC] Started playing this again with the release of the multiplayer mode with some friends. It's definitely provided some of the BEST multiplayer game experiences of my entire year, and I love that I have had a new reason to dig back into this one.

  • [PC] Steam Remote Play Together is the MOST UNDERRATED NEW FEATURE ON STEAM. I'd be lying if I said that 2017 me wasn't disappointed that Supergiant Games' first multiplayer-enabled game wasn't going to have the option to play online, but the fact that it has it retroactively now?? AMAZING.

It isn't the most fluid experience for the person remoting in to play, but it works, and I am grateful that I can play wizard basketball with my one good friend who also loves Pyre.
