I never played the first GW but I"ve played some WoW and did some time in EQ back in the day. I also put in 235 days of time into FFXI which shows that not only do I have patience but I also KNOW WHAT PAIN IS! ;p
I posted this on another forum, but this is like an issue I had.
Are you in the middle of the Companions' quest Proving Honor? I had an issue where I started that quest before I got Lydia, then I dismissed Faendal (who I had with me), and when I went to get Lydia to follow me, both she and Faendal said I had a companion already.
The issue for me was that in Proving Honor, Farkas is supposed to be your Shield-Sibling which means he follows you through that quest. So even if you said you'd meet him there, if you get rid of your companion, he takes their place. I finished the quest and returned to the Companions for their little initiation ritual and I was able to get my other companion back since Farkas isn't needed anymore.
That's from my experience at least. Never tried to attempt the quest with Farkas and a companion. I would assume there are other quests like that where a character is supposed to go with you for a quest, so if that's the issue/solution, it might help to try and finish that quest and see. Hope that helps.

Last night I started scrolling through leaderboards and setting times for circuit tracks where GB club has none set yet. In about an hour I was able to improve our circuit club ranking to 50 from 56. Anyone who's bored and wants to try out some new tracks or cars should just scroll through, find tracks with no times (or only dirty lap times) set and run a couple quick laps. You don't get driver level or anything but it's certainly fun. Test track seems to me nearly entirely empty of times in most classes on many configurations!
Yes! I did this a few days ago on all the E class tracks and it made a big difference in not only my overall circuit leaderboard ranking, but it took the club's overall rankings up a few notches too. Definitely something to think about.
@PsEG: I kinda failed on DL gaining (only got to 22) because I got hung up on leaderboard races. I did manage to do some damage on the E Class boards though so I have no regrets XD
