I haven't even listened to more than 15 minutes of the episode yet and I totally and utterly knew that when this topic came up in the news, this would be the angle of the case with the Beastcast...

EDIT:

I have now listened to the segment and I'd like to apologise, I can admit when I'm wrong.

Vinnie and Alex did harp on his apology not being sincere enough, I think it was, I don't think he's genuinely anti-semetic and he was the target of a hit piece, of course he's going to be pissed people took him out of context.

That being said, the rest of what Vinnie and Alex said was mostly factual and didn't leap to idiotic conclusions like MANY MANY (MANY!) of the stupid articles about this online.

I'll take my lumps and admit I'm wrong. Honestly, I think I'm still angry (!) about the Oculus / Palmer stunt Alex pulled, I assumed he pulled another one of those, before listening.

I was wrong - carry on.

I just wanted to chime in and say thank you for taking the time to do this. Not because you agree or don't agree, but it makes me so happy that you would take the time to process something, think about it, and come back to share your different opinion. I think it's something you rarely see on the internet as many will stand their ground even when the entire original argument has shifted. Yeah, I know this is coming off as super corny, but really, my sincere thanks.

Uh, nobody should ever get in trouble for making jokes. Humor should be beyond reproach. If people get their feelings hurt, then that just means they can't take a joke. What he said wasn't that offensive. Louis CK makes antisemitic jokes for fuck's sake. And Vinny Caravella used the word "Cunt,", and it's regarded by many people to be the most offensive word in the English language. So.... as much as I respect you guys, maybe don't look too deeply on what comedy offends somebody (especially if the person is not you, which, last time I checked, none of you were Jewish.) I'm a member of the LGBTQ community. I've had my share of bullshit shade thrown my way, and my share of people that aren't LGBTQ being offended on my behalf. I have a hard time not saying, "Look, thanks for looking out for me, but I'm a grown-ass man, please shut up." It's patronizing and a little demeaning. I'm not weak, and I'm not "the little guy." I'm intelligent and I can tell the difference between genuine hatred and a joke. I know not everybody is like me, and some people could be offended, but blowing things out of proportion and giving it an offensive quality where it didn't really have one before makes it into a more offensive thing than it was originally. Don't put shit like this on a pedestal. You're keeping the words in power.

Have your own opinion of it, sure. Call it offensive. Do whatever... but do not fuck with comedy. If we can't joke about everything, we can't joke about anything. That being said, PDP deserved this because he was working with Disney. Dude should have paid attention to what he was saying. It's just basic business not to offend or take risks.

Your information is incorrect.

Yeah, saw that stuff. It's just... not funny to me and still offensive, even in context. Also, which part did we get wrong? We all agreed we don't think he's actually an antisemite (I mean, we hope) but he did some dumb stuff. Your post makes me think you believe it's a better description of the story because it aligns with your beliefs. Help me align my ducks.

The segment on Pewdiepie was ill-informed. If you are going to accuse someone of being antisemitic, get your ducks in a row first.

Here is a much better description of the story from Ethan Klein, who is coincidentally a Jew.

Did a test of an authentic ROM of this game to show how much higher Luigi is supposed to jump in the real game, that jump is not supposed to be hard. You guys have some kind of bootleg.

That's pretty sharp. I also noted how the title screen in the video actually didn't have a title. Seems like a bad rom. Honestly, it's pretty disappointing to see a big site like GB making paid content using roms while "amateur" Youtubers take the effort of actually importing a Famicom or at least booting up the VC version in Wii.

Agreed. Did all the budget get blown on West's 1080p cameras, or what? I'm sure people will say "lighten up," but this is a major blunder.

I enjoy the fun retro videos they've been doing, but it takes some of the wind out of the sails when someone hits a wrong button during a moment of panic and an emulator menu appears, or is playing poorly because of an inauthentic controller with a janky d-pad.

I don't think they had any idea that the SMB2 NES ROM is available on the US Wii/Wii U VC. They've used VC for stuff like VinnyVania in the past.

Even if they don't know, they could have easily looked it up and found the results in under a minute. I did just now and saw that it's even out on Wii U, making the process of capturing game footage extremely simple and affordable . They're all professional game journalists and I find it hard to believe they don't have the time to do this bit of research. Honestly, even playing the SNES 'lost levels' version is better than a rom version (and even a bad rom version at that.)

Like @gregalor says, it does take the wind out of the sails because it's basically GB playing a wrong version of SMB2, even when we ignore the whole piracy thing. People get to see a game that plays different from the real thing (the Luigi mode makes a big difference in the real game) and I wouldn't be surprised if it actually is some kind om rom hack.

It does seem odd that they can spend I don't know how much on the new equipment and subsequently refuse to pay a few dollars for the legal version of the game which they then use to make money of it by putting it on the members part of the site.

Honestly, I love Giant Bomb, which you can clearly see as I'm a premium member and for me it's the consistently best gaming site. I love the original features like the Quick Looks, Demo Derby's and the Beastcast among others but things like this stick out like sore thumb to me.

To put it bluntly: why should we pay for this content when they clearly didn't for theirs? (the game)

Yeah, that whole thing is a bummer. I believe our Famicom and copy of SMB2 are still in SF. The easy answer for me on the production end is that sometimes getting those older machines hooked into our capture and streaming setup is extremely hard and unreliable. That being said, I, and Giant Bomb, do favor using the version that is commercially available at the time if we can. I mean, heck, I spent over 300 bucks on copies of Shenmue before we got that thing working. I believe this was an honest error out of ignorance.

@vinny: Hey Vinny, where did you hear that the game runs worse on a regular PS4? I have not run into a single framerate hiccup. Maybe it's when you're playing in VR?

just internet scuttlebutt, nothing verified that I saw. Might be folks were talking about running better meaning "looks better" though.

I love all your content Vinny. This should really be edited better. 17 minutes of nothing happening is a really long time. I know I could scrub ahead, but that really doesn't seem like something the "end user" should worry about.

Thanks and that's the YT version which is currently a direct archive of the stream. The version I postedc on our site and player is trimmed, at least it should be. The YT version was trimmed on YT itself, but has been "processing" that edit since it went live. Hopefully, it takes at some point.

@vinny -

Something seems wrong with the brightness level lately in Hitman and other GB East game streams as well, if I remember correctly. It seems like something in the chain is set to Limited (AKA "16-255" colors) HDMI, as opposed to Full (AKA "0-256" colors), or vice versa - so when the signal is sent in that format, it looks all washed out just like these videos lately. That or something is expecting Deep Color or HDMI Low Black Level, in a similar fashion.

I'm sure your setup is a lot more complex than I realize, but I bet that some piece of the equation needs to be set to the proper signal type or the other components need to be changed to accommodate the piece that is not able to handle the signal as it is, for whatever reason.

For example, many TVs and other equipment like HDMI receivers don't properly report what signal they need and therefore, say on the PC, the NVIDIA drivers guess wrong - so it needs to manually be set to "Limited" or "Full" to fix it in the NV Control Panel. I'd guess something like that needs to be done on some part of your streaming setup, maybe not even the PC or console itself, but another splitter or capture device maybe?

Yeah, noticed once we started going. Sometimes driver updates seem to knock this back. I'll try and get it sorted.
