  • I have to admit that I have a sickness. I have played every monster hunter game more than the previous entry. I clocked probably 80-90 hours in Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for the PSP, which I played in the Mountainlair at WVU with a few friends in 2007 or whenever it came out. Skipping Tri entirely, years later I put a few hundred hours into 4U on the 3DS with colleagues, following up to over 800 hours in World (+ a few hundred more in Gen U for the Switch).

Iceborne is the best Monster Hunter has ever been to me. The combat is fun, the monsters are cool, and the end game is the best it's ever been. The story, normally something completely skippable and ignorable, is actually GOOD! I could not believe how much I cared for these random NPCs when I was done. Oh, and the soundtrack rips.

I recently plopped another few dozen hours into Monster Hunter World on PC so I can move over to the land of good framerates and quick load times for the rest of the ???? time I spend with the game.

Also Hunting Horn is the best weapon, btw.

  • Sekiro reminds me of a game 10 years ago called Demon's Souls. I picked up Demon's Souls shortly after I moved to Hangzhou, because it was about the only game my local game shop had that was not in Japanese. The game got an official English release for SEA, and this was the version that made it to China. I had never heard of this game before, but the box art seemed cool and FROM made some of my favorite games before, so I checked it out.

I wrote a blog post around then about how this game single handedly made me love video games again. It was so weird and new and mysterious, and at the time English language guides sucked so I was basically stumbling through myself. I died more times in the first world in Demon's Souls than I probably died playing Dark Souls 1-3 and Bloodborne combined. I had to learn it's language, how to interact with it, and I greatly enjoyed this.

ANYWAY, this is about Sekiro. I bring up Demon's Souls cuz I felt the same way with Sekiro. I died more on a couple of rando, midbosses in Sekrio than everything else combined. (For the record, it was the spear dude by the tower and the ghost lady near the village.)

I died on these dudes a lot. I probably spent a couple hours grinding them. Then, something clicked. I beat them. The rest of the game felt like I'd taken off weighted clothing as I one-shot numerous bosses. I LOVED the gameplay in this game and hope we get a new one or something.

  • Like a lot of people I slept on the New Super Mario Bros game Wii U. I do not know why!!! I played the Wii one and DS ones and they were... OK???

This game fucking rules. I'd put it as my #3 2d mario game of all time (below 3 and SMW). The level design is great, the mechanics are great, the Luigi U hard mode rules, Toadette rules.

I don't have much more to say about this other than it's the best 2d mario game released in like 2 decades.

  • Judgment is Yakuza but with the story of a decent J-Drama. As someone who used to watch a lot of J-dramas, I loved it.

I will say the gameplay is, imo, not as good as the last 4 Yakuza games. The trailing mechanic sucks, the combat feels a lot more flat, and the side cases while still OK weren't as engaging as the side stories in most Yakuza games.

That aside, I think the main story is stronger than any Yak game since 0 and I grew to really care for the characters. I'd love a Judgment Season 2.

  • this gets the 11th spot cuz I have not been in a place to play it much, but I really liked the 4ish hours I've put into it. I expect it will be high on my 2020 list.
