GOTY 2012

List items

  • This is an ALPHA. And yet even in its currently incomplete state- Starfarer was and is more enjoyable than anything else I played this year. The combat controls, graphics, and ship AI are all already THAT sharp.

  • This slot would most likely have been Dota 2 otherwise- and possibly lower on this list if I hadn't run into Smite. Suffice to say, Smite drew me in with its alternate perspective in the MOBA genre.

  • I was waiting a long time for this one- ever since the first video of it popped up showing what they had pulled off with just the free Unreal Development Kit. Although I didn't spend quite as much time with it as I would have liked (Thanks #2)- the time I was able to spend with it was about as enjoyable as I had hoped it would be.

  • Yes, yes, the shooting is solid, the story is enjoyable, all the typical praises you see of Binary Domain go here. What REALLY puts it on my list, especially this high, is the way it manages to make the cannon-fodder security bots- the very first enemy you encounter- never get old. Its a feat not many other shooters are able to pull off.

  • Even shorter than Mark of the Ninja... But who cares when you can become the cowboy of tomorrow- mounted in a harpoon mech latched onto a Stalker's back and trashing it with the mech's ****-off sword? Or... Leaping at a flying squid bot to let your trusty wolf have its way with it in mid-air? :D

  • This entry is dedicated to the Strike Missions of Black Ops 2. Yes, I bought my first Call of Duty game for the single player...... I'm a masochist- but that drone escort mission was worth it. :P

  • Poor AI and short length be darned, the level of variety Mark of the Ninja puts into sneaking through these 2D environments is indeed impressive.

  • SFxT is definitely one of those games for whom one's enjoyment seems to stem almost purely from mindset. Come with a casual or cooperative multi-player mindset- and it really shines. Competitive mindset? Admittedly not so much, so mileage definitely varies. But for me, the co-op goes a long way.

  • It might not completely excel at either element- but the fluidity and competence of Kingdoms of Amalur's character customization and combat meld into something that's more than the sum of its parts... In some ways at least. Not all. (Given the highly variable quality of the game's quests)

  • In brutal honesty- FTL was one of the most disappointing games for me this year- in that I was expecting to enjoy it way more than I actually did. That's not saying its bad though- as it was still one of the better games I played this year overall. I must not deny the power of Slug Ships that shut down your oxygen. :P
