GOTY 2013: Or, 9 games better than Brothers

All right everybody, it's time again to show each other what we've been getting up to this year when it comes to games. Listed below are 10 games that I feel are deserving of their rankings and until the 30th, might be moved up or down. So let's get to it with Luigi's year.

List items

  • What drew me to this gameplay wise was the promise of not having to fight thousands of people like you see in so many other games lately. But it got better when I started caring about the characters and their dire situation. The story is pretty decent too, but it's familiarity didn't detract from my enjoyment.

  • Irrational hits it out of the park again! I play a lot of fps games, and this one controls just fine, much better than the original Bioshock did anyway. But who cares about the method of delivery when the story kicks ass, and you have a character you feel for. And how often is it that we see games generate such a massive discussion both on and off the internet? Can you name 10 other games this year that did that? (Pssst, it's Brothers)

  • I love me a tactical RPG (more XCOM please), and the new Fire Emblem is a great one. A somewhat forgettable story, but good characters, and intense, thoughtful gameplay make for a great package.

I don't know about others, but every time Donnel dies, I quit and don't touch the game for a while.

  • A very impressive open world experience that had me reminiscing about the old days of GTA, where it was not uncommon to land a helicopter beside a mall as Tommy Vercetti, blasting "Cars" while unloading a hail of bullets from a minigun onto shoppers. GTA V brought some of that back with Trevor and his insanity. However, there's something I can't put my finger on. Why don't I like this more than I did GTA IV?

  • One of the best controlling character actions games I've played this year. And as someone who can't really wrap their mind around button combos, I feel like DmC introduced concepts slowly enough for me to get a decent grasp on it. Can't wait to jump back in!

  • Lara Croft goes on a gritty ass adventure to save her friends after their research ship is sunk in a storm. Go hunting, shoot some dudes, and most importantly, do some Raiding! Also, get creeped out by the weird natural gas filled prison with crazy people who just want to die. It's great.

  • More atmosphere, more lore! Give it all to me. Why are some of the AI so fucking perceptive, and others so blind?! Guns are cool. So is playing this in Russian.

  • Another stylish fighting game that made combo fighting bearable and super fun. Add to that a funny story, world, and goat/chicken magic, and you have yourself a nifty 8-12 hour experience.

  • Spooky, chilling, atmospheric. The gameplay hasn't changed much from Dark Descent, but at least it's better to control your lantern/arm. The story is far and away the best thing about AMFP, and it trumps Dark Descent in that regard.

  • I think plenty has been said about why Brothers is so good, so I don't feel the need to echo that. The only thing I will say is that you should play it.

  • Better than Diablo, and better with a better sense of humour, Van Helsing is a great intro to isometric adventure games. Ghost lady as a companion was a good call.

  • An honourable mention to Ryan. We miss ya, duder!
