Games That I Played / Completed in 2019

Keeping track of everything I played in 2019...

List items

  • January - June 2019

    Completed on PS4 Pro

Patch 4.5 is here, and with a new expansion coming this summer, I am hyped AF to continue playing this phenomenal MMO. 5/5

EDIT: I'm anticipating more info at the Japanese Fan Fest in March. The gunbreaker tank job looks stylish as hell, but with the new Viera race, we will probably see nothing but bunny people come July 2nd.

  • January - February 2019

    Completed on PS4 Pro

There is still SO MUCH to do in this game. I'm chipping away at it bit by bit, but it'll be a while before I complete it.

EDIT: The story kind of drags at the end, so it was a bit of a slog to finish, but I enjoyed the game overall. 4/5

  • January 2019

    Played on PC

This game continues to be difficult, and sometimes very frustrating. If you fuck up, it pretty much ruins the entire run. I need to spend more time just fucking up until I can make some progress.

  • January 2019

    Played on PC

I decided to start a run of CT on a whim the other day. It's been ages since I've seen this game, and I'm enjoying it all over again. It still holds up as one of my favorite RPGs of all time. 5/5

EDIT: I got pretty far, with just side quests to go before the endgame, but I'm putting this game on hold to work on my backlog. I hope to finish it by the end of the year.

  • January 2019

Completed Leon's story, Claire's story, and both substories on PS4 Pro.

A fantastic remake of a great survival horror game. The cat and mouse game you play with the Tyrant is INTENSE. I'm very impressed with this game and I highly recommend it. One of the best games this year so far. 5/5

  • February 2019

Completed Final Mix on PS4 Pro

I'm not sure why I'm doing this, but I decided to play through all of the KH series before I play KH3... I may have gone insane.

This game is enjoyable enough to play, but it definitely feels like a relic of the PS2 era. There is some laughable dialogue as well. I ended up liking this game more than I did when I originally played it back on the PS2. 3/5

  • February 2019

Completed Sora's Story on PS4 Pro

    Watched Riku's Story on Youtube

This game takes the enjoyable combat system in KH1, and turns it into a terribly conceived card matching game. The story is inconsequential to the overall narrative, and kind of a retread of KH1 while adding new characters to the series. I realize this is a remastered GBA game, but I had a really bad time with it. I played through it as fast as I could to get it over with.

    Not Recommended. 1/5

  • February 2019

Watched cutscene movie on PS4 Pro

They ended up making the entire DS game into a 3 hour + movie. This was a much better option than playing though it, and I appreciate the decision to present the story in this way. I wish they would have done this with Chain of Memories. 3/5

  • February 2019

Completed Final Mix on PS4 Pro

I'm glad to be back to playing a numbered KH game. The classic KH combat is back with some tweaks, and I'm enjoying it a lot. I like seeing the new Disney worlds, and the story is better this time around.

EDIT: The voice acting is better than KH1, but there is some truly laughable dialogue again. I don't think I can get through one of these games without rolling my eyes at some point. Still, I enjoyed my time with the game, and the conclusion is satisfying.

    Recommended 4/5

  • February - March 2019

Completed Terra/Ventus/Aqua/Final + Secret Ending on PS4 Pro

I like the characters in this game more than I ever liked Sora and Riku (except Terra - his voice actor was kinda wooden). Aqua has to be one of the best designed characters the KH team has come up with. Also, the Xehanort in this game feels like an actual threat, as opposed to his Nobody and Heartless versions. I liked how each character's campaign was different, and it felt like they actually affected the worlds they visited. Even though the ending is a major bummer (setting up KH1), I still enjoyed my time with it quite a bit. One of the best games in the series. Recommended. 4/5

  • March 2019

Watched custscene movie on PS4 Pro

A boring and kinda pointless entry in the series, as nothing of real consequence happens. I'm glad that I only had to watch this entry. 1/5

  • March 2019

    Completed on PS4 Pro

I'm having a lot of fun with this entry. The traversal is much faster this time, the dream eater minions and upgrade trees are interesting to min/max, and the levels are different from the usual Disney settings. I liked seeing the Hunchback and Tron Legacy worlds. Recommended 4/5

  • March 2019

Completed 0.2 A Fragmentary Passage on PS4 Pro

A short but interesting side story with Aqua in the world of darkness. I'd consider this more of a tech demo for KH3. 3/5

  • March - May 2019

    Played on PS4 Pro

So yeah, when a new From Software game comes out, I will typically drop everything to play it. So KH3 will have to wait for now.

This game seems like a distillation of everything From Software learned with previous Souls titles. The combat has evolved so much that I needed to drop everything I learned from the past games. Deflection is everything, and it's a lesson I'm still learning, but having a great time getting there. This is a game that requires patience and practice. Repetition until you can flawlessly execute counter moves that will make mini-bosses trivial. It's a tough, but incredibly rewarding experience. 5/5

EDIT: I just passed the Genchiro fight in Ashina Castle. HOLY SHIT.

EDIT: Now passed the Great Shinobi Owl fight and I'm getting into the Fountainhead Palace. This is a tremendous experience, and is my GoTY 2019 so far.

EDIT: On the last boss...grinding...skill points...I think I'm going to set this one down for now and come back after finishing some other backlog games.

  • May - June 2019

    Completed on PS4 Pro

So yeah...the minute to minute gameplay is fun...it's a great looking game...the main character is cool...but who TF wrote this??? Why is there a random hunting quest completely unrelated to what I've been doing so far? Why did the opening of the game feel so disjointed? I'm feeling like this could have used more time in the oven...

EDIT: I've played a lot more, and I'm starting to get interested in the story, but a lot of the writing is fairly mediocre. I like Deek and Sarah, but most of the other characters are forgettable. The gameplay is the real draw here. It's like The Last of Us lite, but still very fun. Kind of a mixed bag all in all. 3/5

  • June 2019

    Played on PS4 Pro

A really cool, if slightly janky and unfinished Symphony of the Night clone. The story is laughable, the voice acting hit or miss, and the graphics are a weird mishmash of styles, but I had a lot of fun exploring and fighting bosses. That is, until the boss fights started to get annoying (the alchemist fight is one of the most frustrating fights in this game so far), and I started to take excessive damage from normal enemies even with top tier equipment. I'm playing on Normal Mode (not looking for a challenge) and it's becoming increasingly difficult to have fun playing, so I think I'm going to set this aside for now. 3/5

  • June - December 2019

    Completed MSQ on PS4 Pro

    Playing Patch 5.15

I started by leveling Gunbreaker to 70, so I'm just now working on the MSQ. Too early to tell, but it's definitely interesting. Pretty impressive zones so far. I really like the OST. The battle music is different, but very good. Looks like one of the best expansions yet!

UPDATE: This is one of the best stories I have ever experienced in an MMO. WOW, what a finale! I am SO impressed. My GOTY so far. 5/5

UPDATE: Still playing nearly every day, and into the tome grind for gear. Kind of treading water until the next major patch. I think I'll play other things until then.

Update: Patch 5.1 is here. Crafting is hilarious now. Beast tribe quests are cute. I'm having trouble staying alive in the Nier raid, but it's very well done. I am eagerly awaiting the Ishgardian restoration! MAKE NASCENT FLASH SELF TARGETABLE YOU COWARDS. MSQ is interesting. This game continues to impress.

  • September 2019

    Played Remaster on PS4

A "remastered" version of FFVIII - the character models have been updated, but the majority of backgrounds, overworld map, etc are the same. I never finished this game, so I'm trying to mark it off my list. 4/5

Update: Putting this down for now, but I plan to return to it at some point.

  • September - October 2019

Played GoTY Ed. on PS4 Pro

A beautiful game with an amazing soundtrack, and a mix of gameplay styles - bullet hell, third person action, minigames, etc. I originally started playing this to get some background for the upcoming FFXIV raid collaboration. It's a lot of fun so far. 4/5

Update: Finished Ending A. Will get back to this game at some point over the holidays.

  • October - December 2019

    Playing on Tablet

I started getting into seasonal/daily stuff on CoC. The builder base battles are much more entertaining than the regular base battles, mainly b/c my hero is overpowered and mows through bases. Pretty fun, and I don't feel like I need to spend money to be competitive. 3.5/5

  • October 2019

    Completed Remaster on PS4 Pro

I got the itch to play some Assassin's Creed, and I got this with the Odyssey season pass. It remains a flawed, but fun romp through colonial / revolutionary era America with some eye-rolling moments (like riding double with Paul Revere to warn that the British are coming - LOL). 3/5

  • October 2019

    Played on PS4 Pro

I got the urge to play this game again for a bit, and it remains as impressive as the last time I played. A beautiful and violent wild west simulator. Still somewhat awkward to control; still just as engrossing and enjoyable. One of the best games of this generation. 5/5

Update: Almost to Act 3, but I'm setting this game down for now. Will return and finish soon.

  • October 2019

    Completed Remaster on PS4 Pro

I am really excited for Part 2, so I decided to play through the first game again. This continues to be one of my favorite games of all time. It's a masterpiece. 5/5

  • October - November 2019

    Completed on PS4 Pro

An amusing take on the Fallout New Vegas formula. The developers loved them some Firefly. Really - there's a Kaylee, a doctor, a priest, and a Badger (top hat included). Great companion characters. Unfettered capitalism is a motherfucker huh? Very fun so far. Sniper combat is ridiculous at max level. 4/5

Update: Wrapping this one up. One of the best games this year.

Update: Last boss was some serious bullshit, but I respecced my skills and was able to lockpick / hack my way past it. Nice wrap up at the end. Really fun game. Well done Obsidian.

  • November 2019

    Completed 100% on PS4 Pro

Approaching the endgame, and I'm having a great time. Great combat, exploration, locations, characters, and the story is intriguing. I like this more than a lot of the more recent star wars content. Only mark against it are some weird bugs / jank, and one sliding section that took me like 15 tries LOL. I would recommend this to any Star Wars fan. 4/5

Also, watch The Mandalorian. That shit is dope af.

  • November - December 2019

Completed Hard Playthrough on PS4 Pro

I got the itch to play through this again. Naughty Dog was really at the top of their game with U4 and TLoU. I love the vistas in this game. The story is great, and the cutscenes are so well done, it's like watching/playing a movie. Only quibble I have is the length - it's a tad too long. Still highly recommended. 5/5

  • December 2019

    Completed on PS4 Pro

The GoTY Edition was on sale for $5 LOL. I forgot that the combat in this game is lifted from the Batman Arkham games. Pretty cool mix of Assassin's Creed and Batman AA. I'm having fun revisiting this game.

Update: Bit of a grind to get to the end, but I enjoyed the story quite a bit. The nemesis system is such a cool feature. I can see why this game got GoTY in a year with very few great releases. 4/5

  • December 2019

    Playing on PC

I picked this up during the steam sale and played some co-op with my friends. This game is rad. The manga style cutscenes, voice acting, and music are all top notch. The combat is kind of difficult to get the hang of, but with some upgrades, it becomes VERY FUN. I'm hoping to play more before the new year. 4/5

  • December 2019

    Playing on PS4 Pro

I'm finally getting to this game after all that exhausting setup early in the year. The graphics are beautiful and the combat is fun so far. I'm still rolling my eyes pretty hard at the dialogue, but it doesn't really detract from my enjoyment. I will try and push to finish this before the new year (fingers crossed). 4/5

  • December 2019

    Playing on PS4 Pro

Got this for $20. Figured I'd try it out finally. I haven't played since the early beta (I wasn't impressed), but the game devs have put in work, and this is a much better looking game. I am playing mostly solo in classic ES first person combat. I need to spend more time with the game, but I'm having fun so far.

Update: Turns out you need to play this game in third person to see the enemy charge attacks on the ground. Bummer. I restarted and figured out how to begin the MSQ (to play through the game in order), so I should have a better time. Kind of a knockoff Skyrim so far, but you can go anywhere in the ES world. I need to put more time into this to form an opinion.

  • December 2019

    Played on PC

I played a bit of this game with my friends. It's a bummer the controller is bugged out on PC, but it was pretty fun for an early access game.
