The Georgians started it by trying to take back the South Ossetia province that had separated from them. Having said this the Russian response is completely over the top, bombing targets all over Georgia and now it appears they've moved into Georgia.
How can Russia still say they're protecting their citizens by invading Georgia? The parts of Georgia that have separated have nothing to do with Russia.
I think it's more a case of the Kremlin wants a different government in power in Georgia, one that's pro Russia not pro NATO.
