To no surprise, (At least to me) Rockstar Games announced today that Red Dead Redemption 2 has been delayed until Spring 2018. Rockstar also stated that more game details will be released this summer. Along with the delay announcement, Rockstar also released 7 new screenshots:

Isn't delaying their games sort of like a "thing" for Rockstar? I seem to recall a few of their past tent-pole projects also got pushed back at some point. They're a developer that isn't really beholden to any schedule or budget. GTAV cost some ridiculous amount and then they made it all back in sales within 2 days.

@kingbonesaw: I am sure porting GTAV to next gen consoles and PC was a ton of work, but that is still a pretty big gap.

That second screenshot sure looks like Armadillo from the first game. Is it supposed to take place in the same land mass as the first game?

@humanity: Pretty much. That's why I said to no surprise. @jjbsterling: No details have been given by Rockstar yet. All they've said it that the game takes place in "America’s unforgiving heartland." However, it does look similar:

With the amount of detail and the level the tech and visuals are pretty cutting edge, it's not a surprise Rockstar games take time like this now. Plus, yes they have legitimate online modes unlike the previous games.

Anyway, the real reason it has been delayed is because they are adding a robust PUBG-style Battle Royale mode to the multiplayer.

I already played RDR free roam like that tbh.

The real shocker here is that it's been four years since GTAV. That doesn't seem right.

I wonder if they are going to incorporate any of the character switching and multiple endings of the recent GTA games into this? That would be cool. I wouldn't mind seeing gun and wardrobe customization, too. Maybe you'll be part of a gang pulling heists? I can't wait to see what this game ends up being.

@sparky_buzzsaw: That re-release really seemed to keep it in the forefront of the gaming consciousness longer than any of their previous work.

I was already willing to put money on it getting pushed back so I'm not to shocked or disappointed. I'm now looking at this game as my reward for making it through the seasonal affective disorder that comes with living in the Pacific Northwest.

I think RS also saw that this year was pretty stacked with GOTYs and wanted to wait a year to take 2018 for themselves, that and they've been working for 4-5 years trying to work out all the bugs this game will have. Hopefully they learned from RDR about making an engine that is built with scotch tape and hopes and dreams. (Seriously it was a minor miracle that RDR worked at all with that engine)

I started re-watching Deadwood because of this. As long as a game is excellent, I'm all for it being delayed!

Disappointing, but 2017 has enough to play to last me the rest of the year already.

You know the more I think about this game the more I'm tempering my hopes. I feel like the old west would be hard to iterate on--especially when they covered so much of North America and classic western ideas in Redemption.

Putting the last game at the end of the west meant it had the best weapons for us to use; I imagine the weapons will be pretty much the same in this one as you don't want to give the players less fire power in a sequel.

Hopefully they'll add some ideas from GTA V to this--i.e. HEISTS!!!! Multiple protagonists if it helps the narrative. But I mean what else can they really do to change things up? The technical step up will be much less impressive from Redemption to this than Redemption was from Revolver--unless they are going to pull off some next level shit.

Idk, talking to a friend about this news got me thinking how I'm less interested in this sequel than I thought. RDR had their best story so hopefully they can come close to matching that, but other than that I don't have much to hang my hopes on.

Really wish Agent would come into fruition because I would love to see something totally new from Rockstar.

I'm looking forward to this so fucking much... But I'd rather wait 6 months extra and have it live up to/surpass their usual standards than buy another rushed/unfinished disappointment (looking at you FFXV). When it comes down to it I still trust R*'s judgement and if it's not ready I'll wait happily.

I wonder how many other triple releases will try to get out of the way into November or September/August? I don't think CoD or BF will move but others might.

The early 2018 release date was never that convincing considering how little marketing there has been. It'll be interesting to see how they differentiate the story from the previous game.

I’m pretty sure this will probably turn into a 2019 game.

This gives me plenty of time to restart and actually finish RDR. Now I just need to get on that.

As long as its done right, I don't care. Rockstar has consistently delivered. I am more than happy to give them more time and not complain since the likelihood that they are taking their time to make it right and not rush is very high.

As I said elsewhere a few minutes ago, I don't care that much. You all told Rockstar it was okay to have mediocre, sluggish mechanics and irreverent storytelling by buying 80 million copies of GTA V. Thanks a lot.

i really enjoyed that first game. wish there was more character customization but i loved the activities like hunting treasure maps gambling. Only gripe i really had was when you drank at the bar you were just trying to balance and it never became like a bar fight.

I spent wayyyy to much time bounty hunting fools and tying them to tracks for my amusement.
