A return to form for this beloved Survival Horror series

Resident Evil 7 is easily the best game in the franchise released during the last decade, underneath it's Texas Chainsaw Massacre style exterior is a pure RE title that brings back a lot of the lore and mechanics that made the franchise so memorable.

Outside of boss fights there is really no need to fight enemies and for the majority of enemy encounters it is really recommended to save your ammo and hightail it. Space is used to a level of pure genious, with compact locations having multiple paths for you to make your way around. Boss fights are for the most part really well put together with the exception of the fight in the butcher room which isn't designed as well as it should of been and the final boss encounter which is pretty much a scripted event, which is somewhat saddening since tha final boss encounter could of been used for a pretty intense fight, something that is a staple in the RE franchise.

I also found puzzle solving to be child levels of easy and the lack of varietty of molded enemies ends up beeing pretty noticable after a few hours, if i am not mistaken there are only 4 differnt types. Although these arent really any major issues and doesn't break you from the immersion it still something that long time fans of the classics will notice. Scares are used sparecely and well placed, they are mostly used during the first few hours of the game since this time frame is where the player is still gettting used to the prespective and feel of the game however some of earlier scares are plainfully obvious meant to enhance the VR experience, during the last hour or two the scares are almost non existent since the game picks up it's pace and takes more of an action oriented approach.

One of the features where this title stands out among other games is in it's pacing, it is hard for me to even think of a game that rivals this one in this aspect. Encounters dont go on for too long nor are they too short, when you need breathing space the game will give it to you and when tension needs to be high the game will make sure they are, this is probably one of the reasons that the game comes out as being called short by some players and one thing that needs to be understood is that length does not equal quality. I never found myself being bored and was constantly on the edge of my seat and excited to see what would happen once I turned the next corner.

Overall RE7 is a game I would recommend to anyone, the shift in perspective and the lack of returning characters will put off a few of the more hardheaded fans however I believe that a new instalment in a game doesn't need returning cast nor a reboot to continue (I am looking at you God of War reboot). I can only urge anyone to stick with the game to the end and make your decision once you beat it.
