Battlefield Hardline Review

Battlefield Hardline did not crash during our tests and appears to function precisely as expected at this time.

Vehicles are still a factor, but we're mostly talking about cop cars and bikes, not jets and tanks.
Vehicles are still a factor, but we're mostly talking about cop cars and bikes, not jets and tanks.

Do you want to play more Battlefield-style multiplayer, with some new modes and an ever-so-slight spin on said multiplayer's scale and weaponry? That's the question you need to ask if you're considering a purchase of Battlefield Hardline. It seems to be functional (which is more than you could say about its predecessor when it launched in 2013), and it plays like a Battlefield game, generally speaking. Either that's something you're interested in paying full price for or, for whatever reason, you aren't. The other parts of Battlefield Hardline aren't interesting enough to further justify the purchase, so I probably wouldn't take the single-player campaign into account too heavily if you're on the fence.

Or, to put it another way, you probably already know whether you're going to buy Battlefield Hardline or not.

To separate a bit from the crowd of people who are already either firmly in or out of Camp Battlefield, let's talk a bit about those modes and tweaks. Battlefield Hardline is about cops and criminals instead of the military and "opposing forces." So the scale of the conflicts you see in the multiplayer mode are... somewhat smaller. Or, at least, you can't spawn with a rocket launcher. Instead you just have to miraculously find a rocket launcher out in the environment. And you aren't flying jets around all crazy-like... but yeah, there are still helicopters. It's a somewhat minor change, which is kind of ridiculous (or, depending on your viewpoint, quite worrying) when you think about the scope of most police operations.

Hardline leans into no-respawn, round-based modes a bit more heavily than BF4 did with a hostage rescue mode and a VIP escort mode. It also turns the conquest control points into vehicles that must be driven quickly to score in the Hotwire mode. Hotwire's a cool idea, but with vehicle-destroying weaponry being a little harder to come by, it's not quite as explosive as I'd originally hoped. Heist has one team defending money from the attacking team, and Blood Money turns that into a two-way money fight as both teams try to secure cash from a central vault by returning it to their base. That gets interesting because you can steal cash from the enemy team's base, potentially making for some big score swings. From there it's Team Deathmatch and two sizes of the standard Battlefield Conquest mode. It's a solid variety of new things to mess with that doesn't sacrifice the things that typically bring people to a Battlefield game. That said, I found myself sticking to Conquest and TDM, just like I did in BF4.

You'll play as Nick Mendoza in the single-player campaign.
You'll play as Nick Mendoza in the single-player campaign.

The single-player side of Hardline is interesting, but the more I played of it, the more that interest became academic, rather than anything to do with the actual game. It's built around episodes, a bit like a makeshift TV show. This is nice because it forces each mission to have a little bit of setup up front, some action in the middle that crescendos into some kind of light payoff. Every 30-45 minutes or so you're getting some bit of advancement on the story. That would all work a bit better if the story was any good. Instead it feels like something that is attempting to approximate "gritty" television police dramas without any of the character development, tension, or logic that drives the genre's best work. Double-crosses happen out of nowhere in what quickly becomes an affair about dirty cops doing things to other dirty cops. By the end it attempts to wrap it up into some kind of message, but the way the story gets there only manages to make the final shot laughable.

The gameplay end of the campaign is quite a bit different than what you'd expect from a Battlefield game, too. It's a stealth-optional game that gives you a silly-looking "freeze" mechanic that you can use to flash your badge and effectively "stun" up to three enemies at range. Then you can waltz up and, unless one of them gets too jumpy or another patrolling guard sees you in action, you can handcuff and arrest enemies, clearing whole encounters without firing a shot. You even tag enemies with a cell phone camera, completing the loop on making this feel a bit like a low-rent Far Cry.

The dumb thing about all this stealth is that you frequently roll with an AI-controlled partner, who the developers have seemingly decided to make totally invisible to enemy AI. So I ran into multiple situations where I was stalking up behind some obviously corrupt security guard to make a completely legit arrest when my AI guy came up, ran right though the enemy's vision cone, and got behind me all without causing anyone to be alerted. Make no mistake, it would be way worse if the idiotic partner AI could break your stealth, but it makes the whole thing look and feel stupid. You can, of course, just shoot your way through those situations, but the combat against the AI isn't especially exciting. I ended up playing it fairly low-profile most of the time because, hey, at least it felt different than the typical Battlefield campaign that way.

You'll start in Miami, but the campaign takes you around to a handful of different locales.
You'll start in Miami, but the campaign takes you around to a handful of different locales.

The game handles collectibles in a way I appreciated. As you find various bits of evidence, different "cases" are opened up. Some of these factor into the main story, but they mainly just give you context on some of the crimes happening around these dirty cops. So you'll find, say, a drug lab in a militia compound or a box of liquid cocaine. Or maybe just a business card or some scrawled notes. You can scan all this stuff in with your phone, get a little bit of dialogue about the significance of said evidence, and move on. When you collect all the evidence for one of your cases, a quick video plays out to wrap things up. It gives the collectibles actual context in a way that made them feel worthwhile. It's a nice touch in an otherwise unremarkable game.

Battlefield Hardline is hardly a disaster, but it feels like a franchise spinning its wheels with minor adjustments, rather than truly advancing forward. Given the embarrassingly long time spent patching and getting Battlefield 4 up to snuff, maybe a "stable" Battlefield will be enough for some players. And if you're a die-hard fan of the franchise, perhaps the ability to play Battlefield on nine new maps will be worth the price of admission on its own. For me, Hardline just made me realize that I paid for the map packs on BF4 and never played them because the game was too broken for too long. I'd probably be served just as well by going back and playing that stuff some more.

Can the badge/stun mechanic be used in multiplayer? Now that could of made things interesting while playing as the cops.

Playing the Hardline PC beta made me try my Origin Game Time (TM) for BF4 and i still went back to 3, which i paid full price for, way back when. I'm still meh on battlefield games but Hardline was an alright one.

kinda amusing when the same review site gives a pass to invisible AI teammates in 1 game and then knocks it in another. the Last of Us had Ellie as an invisible AI, that would often walk clear out into the open without ghosting you and in the review "They won't get in your way, and while it's a little weird when enemies don't notice these characters walking right in front of them, that's preferable to having them constantly messing up your approach." yet in the Hardline review it is a much harsher review of the exact same form & function being used.

@canadianmath: that's kinda my point, it's so focused on the game design mechanically that it completely sweeps under the rug the actual affecting parts of the game and it's relation to the police/criminal dynamic, militarization of police and basically the climate that this game released into. I'm saying it's a kinda bad review.

[rumor]

EA’s Uses Code Fillers But Can Legally Call It 100% Battlefield. Large companies have been the subject of rumors that they substitute unusual or unethical substances in their products, usually to decrease costs. EAs is not immune to such claims. EAs has been accused of using everything from worms to JavaScript in its games. Dating far back to at least 1988, there have been rumors that EA’s restaurants use left over Sims code in their games.

The fact that EA’s uses rotten code and fillers does not stop them from legally using the claim that they served 100% Battlefield. EA’s has assured its consumers that its product contains 100% gameplay. They are allowed to do this because EA’s buys their “Battlefield” from a company called “100% Battlefield Code Company”, making it possible for EA’s to call its 'game byproducts' “100% Battlefield”.

Visceral needs to be put to better use than working on the BF franchise...

I wouldn't be surprised if Visceral are the next in line to get the EA boot. Not a knock against Visceral they are great, but EA has a habit of devouring and destroying studios they have acquired when they aren't spitting out enough money on a product. Or simply when the product isn't getting a great reception.

As someone who didn't pick up BF4, Hardline is definitely worth picking up. I don't really care about the single player and the new multiplayer modes set Hardline apart. That being said, I can understand being disappointed if you go into this looking for a CoD style campaign and only want to play Conquest.

I only recently got Battlefield 4. I had to buy the game for $40, and decided to double down for premium maps for $50 because I figured "why not?". About a month later they reduced premium to $20 and the physical product went down to $30. I think that was the last time I spent money on an EA product. Nice to hear this at least works out of the gate but the last thing I want to do is pay MORE money for more Battlefield. No jets and no tanks is also a tough sell. I'm still caught up with playing random games of Evolve. Sometimes less is more when it comes player count. Thanks for the review Jeff.

Heh awesome subtitle. It is telling that that is the most pertinent info we need when dealing with a battlefiled game.

I will stick with BF4 because... well... why would I want BF4 without tanks and jets?

Exactly.

BF4 was stable and fine by January of 2014 and it's probably the best MP experience there is at present. Each map pack got appreciably better (except I don't care for Dragon's Teeth) and the last release, Final Stand, has some INCREDIBLE maps.

I'm skipping hardline because BF4 still delivers.

Depends what you're playing it on. I'm on PC and it still isn't playable and looking through various forums it looks like I'm not the only one still having problems. There was one older nvidia driver that got it running smooth for me, but they updated the game shortly after to require a newer driver. I finally just gave up and uninstalled it the other day.

I had a lot of fun during the beta, so I'll definitely be jumping on board. I never really cared for the single player mode in these FPS war games like BF or COD, with the exception of maybe Bad Company 2, so i am really not fussed if it is a little lacklustre.

Jumping in cars, shooting suckers in helicopters and hitting objectives...i think it'll be ticking the boxes i care about.

I'm starting to realize I don't agree with GB regarding Battlefield games. I remember when BF3 was coming out that was suppose to be the 'real' BF experience but I still vastly preferred BC2. It's definitely my favorite in the series and I started with 1942.

The fact that Jeff says he sticks to playing TDM and Conquest is also telling for me. TDM in my opinion is by far the worst game mode, especially in Hardline. People literally spawn behind you. It is just a complete clusterfuck. Admittedly, I don't even like Conquest that much. I know it is the classic game mode for BF but I much rather play an objective map that has the players focused on something. I felt like Conquest is a lot of aimless running between points only to find that someone across the map has driven a jeep around the edge of the map to take the back flag.

I miss Rush mode in Hardline, or at least I wish there was a game mode that was similar to it.

Yeah, I'm definitely part of the minority. I'd be less disappointed if it was actually a bad game, but I really enjoyed it when it worked and spent hours upon hours trying every driver, user.cfg, and nvidia profile I could find to make it work.

Jeff and the rest of the GB crew already talked about the social implications on the Podcast, in the Unfinished, and in the Quicklook. He also alluded to those concerns in this very review when he wrote, "...It's a somewhat minor change, which is kind of ridiculous (or, depending on your viewpoint, quite worrying) when you think about the scope of most police operations."

There's nothing more that can really be added to the discussion other than "Hey guys, remember when we said the militarization of a civil police force sucks? Guess what: the militarization of a civil police force still sucks."

Well written review as always. My only gripe is that sometimes, it feels as if the Giant Bomb reviewers write their pieces as if they were meant to be delivered orally (like a speech or lecture).

For example, "Make no mistake, it would be way worse if the idiotic partner AI could break your stealth, but it makes the whole thing look and feel stupid."

What is the first "it" referring to? The second indefinite "it" compounds the confusion. This type of construction would come off naturally in a spoken context; here, the casual approach makes it a bit difficult to read IMO.

Haha. You bring back a problem I had a long time ago. When I was writing essays for school, I got that complaint as well. And I never managed to fully understand it. When I read something it is voiced in my mind, so for me there is very little difference between written text and someone saying something to me.

I can tell the difference between a well written piece and something written as if it is being said, but I find it very difficult to 'know' where and when they use what words exactly to turn spoken language into proper written language. I've never learned any rules that tell you how to do that.

I played the beta, and didn't care for it at all, personally. I'm hardly a Battlefield, or FPS junkie for that matter, but did like what they were doing with BF3 & 4 in terms of visuals and overall gameplay. I can't say the same based on what I was exposed to during the beta, so it doesn't surprise me that this game got a "meh" rating.

I'm surprised that the dev team decided to insert a single player campaign at all. I'm not sure why given that BF3 and 4 both did for little reason but I assumed Hardline's "in between" status would result in less money being spent on voice and script heavy linear adventure.

Yeah, I don't remember BF2 having a single player campaign and I loved that game. I don't think many Battlefield fans would be that devastated without a single player campaign, I know I sure wouldn't. That way they could spend their resources on testing more stuff or have a longer beta period. :)

Battlefield Hardline is nothing remarkable, but its ability to take the formula, twist is slightly, and draw me back in after i had tired with Battlefield 4, says something about its viability.

I have already put more hours into Battlefield Hardline than i have Call of Duty Advanced Warfare, and the latter has been out for months. In fact, the fun ive had playing B:H, even though it is pretty much a mere expansion of Battlefield 4, has made what i had been considering for a while now, official. I have completely switched my loyalty from Call of Duty to Battlefield.

Battlefield Hardline is just plain fun. There is a strategy to Battlefield games ive come to enjoy as twitch shooting has gotten stale.

Then again, if you arent into FPS....i guess it all may get stale.

Game Journalists: "We're sick of these first person games where the only interaction you can have is shooting."

Visceral: "Here you go."

Game Journalists: "Well, that's stupid."

I agree this is basically a Battlefield/COD hybrid, it's kind of dumb, but man I'm having more fun playing it than I should. Also on the Bombcast you guys mentioned how the main character (whatever his name is) seemed to have an endless supply of handcuffs. He clearly uses zipties. Look in some of the cutscenes; his vest is almost overflowing with them. Guy is strapped with the things. It's pretty hilarious.

The "AI companions are invisible" stealth workaround is kind of bad, it affected my playthrough of TLoU as well, was difficult to find any gravity to the game's plot when the character is seemingly nonexistent outside of cutscenes or when being directly controlled.

Not that that's a new issue, it's just exacerbated. Gaming stories really won't be all that great until they find a way to competently mix the weight of the narrative with the flow of the gameplay.

It's probably just a holdover from the GameSpot days where written reviews were, in a lot of cases, also the scripts for the video reviews.
