Gears of War 4 Review

Gears of War 4 is a good reminder of why Gears of War was so cool in the first place.

The new Gears gang looks good in the armor and knows how to cut an enemy with a chainsaw gun.
The new Gears gang looks good in the armor and knows how to cut an enemy with a chainsaw gun.

It's been awhile since Gears of War has felt absolutely vital. Five years, if you want to be a little more exact about it. The release of Gears of War 3 was the high-water mark for the series up to that point, both narratively as it closed off most of the loose ends you wanted to see wrapped up by the end of the trilogy and technically. Gears 3 was a great-looking Xbox 360 game that built up some terrific gameplay additions when compared to the earlier games in the franchise.

Since then, the series lost its way a bit. Epic seemed to drift away from game development, with its then-owned studio, People Can Fly, handling a Gears side story that filled in story gaps that didn't need filling and offering up gameplay twists that were occasionally interesting but usually superfluous. Not long after that, Microsoft realized the value of the Gears franchise and brought it in-house, converting one of its studios into a Gears-dedicated studio along the way. That team got its feet wet with a technically competent remake of the first Gears of War that really just made it obvious how much the series had improved over the course of that initial trilogy. Going back to Gears 1 just made me want to see a full, new Gears of War game.

Gears of War 4 is The Coalition's first full, new Gears of War game. And it feels like a good mix of old and new, capturing the characters and gameplay moments that made the series feel so impactful in the first place while advancing a new set of characters, a new, well-justified story, and the sort of multiplayer options you'd expect to see. It might not reinvent the gear, but it goes a long way to making the franchise feel alive in a way it hasn't since 2011. If nothing else, it's left me wanting to see more from the franchise and the team behind it.

Weather effects and stabbing both play a meaningful role in Gears 4.
Weather effects and stabbing both play a meaningful role in Gears 4.

Gears of War 4 is set years after the events of 3, where Marcus Fenix sat down, took his do-rag off, and made you think that the Locust threat was more or less over. Gears 4 puts you in the boots of Marcus' son, JD Fenix. It seems that the situation has changed since we last checked in on this universe, as the younger Fenix and his colleague Del have abandoned their post, left the Gears, and taken up with some "outsiders." The COG may have successfully fought off the Locust, but in the years that followed they seem to have become quite the oppressors themselves, with robots known as DBs doing most of the heavy lifting as they attempt to rebuild the planet and repopulate the race. It's politically muddy in ways that the previous trilogy would occasional hint at, but now you're seeing the effects of that trilogy spun out, 25 years later. It's a good swap that makes the good guys the bad guys, as the game opens with your crew of outsiders raiding a COG construction site.

The game doesn't spend much time actually exploring this new flip, though, as a new/old threat of creatures that come to be known as "the Swarm" rear their ugly head around halfway through the game. While the airdrops of robot troops made the game's opening chapters feel at least a little different, the Swarm come off as the Locust troops of the previous games but with somewhat better AI. They'll flank you, they'll hop over your cover to knock you back, but they'll also just post up behind something and take mindless shots in your direction. And they'll occasionally emerge from nests that look suspiciously like the Locust emergence holes. So the bulk of the game, then, just feels like more Gears of War with some new unspeakable creatures thrown in along the way, including a "snatcher" who sucks up downed players and traps them inside the creature's stomach until other players put enough rounds into the enemy, forcing it to puke the player back up. There's some neat stuff in there, but I was definitely left wishing that the campaign didn't cruise back into its comfort zone quite so quickly.

It also must be said that the game is really leaning into its status as the first step in a new Gears of War saga, sometimes at the expense of its own story. The world is interesting and I like its cast of characters, both new and old. Cool things happen along the way that enrich the Gears of War universe. But Gears of War 4 is mostly setup with very little in the way of resolution. The ending moments feels like they're missing an encounter or two.

You can play the campaign cooperatively with another person, or you can dive right into the game's multiplayer modes. The competitive multiplayer brings new weapons into the conflict, but that doesn't mean that it isn't still a map full of bulky, shotgun-toting fighters who love to roll up behind you and splatter you into a mess before you know what's happening. This is the fifth Gears of War game, and by this point you probably already know if you're into that sort of thing or not. I used to be, but as the competitive community developed and got better and sneaking up behind you and shotgunning you down, I fell out of love with this mode in the game. On one hand, it's a shame that this facet of the game isn't more inviting to new players. On the other... well... it's the fifth Gears of War game, and by this point you probably already know if you're into that sort of thing or not.

Some of the new enemies just look straight-up disgusting, but most of them blow up when they die. Fair trade.
Some of the new enemies just look straight-up disgusting, but most of them blow up when they die. Fair trade.

Even as someone who isn't likely to spend any more time with the competitive side of the game, Gears of War 4 still feels like it has a lot to offer. Horde mode returns as the wave-based survival mode that up to five players can play. It uses a class-based system this time out with equippable bonuses and starting weapons that correspond to each class. Soldiers are your everyman Gears of War character, while Heavy players get bonuses to explosive damage. Engineers start with the repair tool for making sure your defenses are in working condition. Scouts collect more power out in the field, which is used to purchases new fortifications. And each class can equip a set of bounties and bonus cards.

Yes, Gears of War 4 is the latest in an increasingly long line of games to bring a card metaphor into the action. Here you'll open blind boxes (which you can grind out for a far-too-high price or spend actual money on) and get new characters, weapon skins, versus bonuses, Horde skills, and bounties. The skills are things like a card that gives you 20% damage bonus whenever you active reload in Horde mode. Bounties are things like "earn 20,000XP when you build 50 fortifications." And so on. Skill cards can be combined to increase their bonus potential and you'll earn the ability to equip multiple cards as you level up. It's a neat system that doesn't dig too deep into the single-use item side of microtransactions, but ultimately the rate at which you earn in-game currency seems way too low, making the game feel too biased in favor of real-money transactions. It's not enough to ruin the core of the Horde experience--which is one of the best wave-based survival modes in the business--but it's still a bummer.

Gears of War 4 is a great-looking game both on the PC and Xbox One, though with its higher frame rate potential and better resolution options, the PC version is the way to go, if you're able. The only real catch is that PC and Xbox One players can't mingle in the public, competitive side of the game. So if you're going in looking to play with friends against other humans, you'll all need to commit to the same version of the game to stick together. Horde mode and co-op don't enforce that same limitation, though it's easy to see why you'd want to keep the higher-fidelity mouse-and-keyboard crowd away from the controller users in competitive matches.

My time with Gears of War 4 left me with a feeling that the game could have been a little more ambitious in spots. It feels a little too safe and too unwilling to ditch some of the traditions of the initial trilogy. But the ways it plays around with and reintroduces the characters from those Gears of War games is expertly handled, making for some great moments along the way. It might not stick the landing, but Gears of War 4 puts the franchise back on the map in a big way, and large parts of it are a great time.

It's a great game. Multiplayer is still a blast. The PC version is beautiful and runs at 60FPS with no stuttering or crashing ever, which is more than I can say about many of major launches recently.

I'm about an hour into the campaign so far. It definitely is playing it safe. There haven't been any wow moments yet. I'm not sure how I feel about the microtransactions though. That remains to be seen.

Pretty spot on with how I'm feeling about the game so far. I wish they took a few more chances, the "not locust" enemies feel just like the locust. Having a great time with it though, it's real good.

I wasn't expecting much, so I guess this sounds about right. I really haven't had any interest in the series in ages, as I was pretty bored after 2. Shame they never really capitalized on any of the unique facets that actually made the IP cool. I need more than just another shooter if I'm going to bother, these days (unless it's really exceptional despite being boilerplate).

It's super fun. A dozen hours into Horde/Versus and I've only beaten the prologue, but I just want to keep playing.

We did Judgement in a single sitting last weekend, and after 5 years away I was surprised how great these games are to just play. I remember the set pieces and story and graphics, but it would all mean very little without a core as strong as this.

Great review Jeff! Totally agree about the swarm stuff, only in chapter 3 but I liked where they were going with the COG as the 'bad' guys before the generic bad guys showed up.

Fair review. Game needs significant rebalancing in the mp. And the RNG for skins and characters is a real bastard of a move by the coalition. The pricing of items (both in in game currency and real world currency) is terrible. Review is about right. Good stuff, but so much of the heart is missing due to the money grab.

Spot on review.

The PC version is fantastic and runs really great, however, if you are into playing multiplayer (except horde) - forget about it. I've been trying to find a game of arms race for days without success.

Playing the game with Xbox owners should be an option. Why not just go all the way if you put crossplay into your game? I've been playing with a controller on PC and I had no troubles beating keyboard and mouse players.

I'm about 80% through the campaign in co-op, its definitely the most enjoyable way to play it. So far it is lighter on big set pieces than its predecessors, but on PC it looks great.

Horde's a bit disappointingly easy at the moment - the manned turrets are incredibly broken. I beat Insane 1-50 with just a team size of 3, and we didn't have crazy strong cards equipped, either. They either need to nerf the turret's accuracy, or tweak the enemy AI to more meaningfully try to punish you rooting yourself in a position for lengthy stretches of time.

Great review. I think its more of a 5 star game for me. That's because I like the whole package; Campaign, horde, and multiplayer verses. I bought the game on PC so I was able to get it on the Xbox one for free as well. This allows my girlfriend and I the ability to play the campaign and horde mode together with out having to do split screen. Xbox play anywhere is literally a game changer as I was more of a PC/PS4 guy this generation so far. This is easily one of the best PC ports I have ever seen. Gears of War 4 on Ultra settings at 2560x1080 resolution is something all gamers should see to believe. Truly one of my favorite releases of the year, and my all time favorite Gears game. Thank you Coalition for truly saving my interest in this series!

So, they didn't go with my advice of having the stories of the first three games exists only within Tommy Westphall's imagination? (Chad Allen could REALLY have used the work.)

This.

I've been using a controller on PC as well and haven't had any issues. People have really been exaggerating how much of a disadvantage that console players would be at against PC players. They should at the very least add this option to the social quick play playlist to increase the already low player count.

I think they introduced a little too many story bits that are not explored to the degree that they should be. There are hints and tidbits of interesting story threads, but they don't really amount to anything. The swarm antagonist could be interesting as it is presented if more information regarding motivation is explained. There's more to discuss, but I don't wanna get into spoilers.

The mulitplayer is great, and horde mode is cool. The microtransactions are intrusive and take away from both experiences when considering previous games in the series and even when evaluating the game on it's own merits. It's a shame, and hopefully The Coalition makes changes to their gambling system..

Especially for a game like Gears. I'd even say the mouse & keyboard players would be at the greater disadvantage due to the nature of movement in multiplayer. I haven't seen any really good players on keyboard wall bounce and outmaneuver someone like you can with a gamepad, but I'm willing to be proven wrong.

I think they should just say fuck it and add a social cross-play playlist, otherwise that game is dead on PC just like the other Gears titles.

@bribbins:

Yup. There was a botched update that went live on like the day after release. So people were able to play the night before, and then suddenly unable to play (the game would not allow you to play it until it updated)

I had it preloaded but didn't get a chance to play it until a couple days later and was stuck at the update. I guess what was happening was instead of just downloading the update, the windows store was just re-downloading the entire updated game or something, cause it would tell you the patch was a few hundred megs and then ask you to free up another 80gigs of space... after which, the previous version of the game would delete itself.

I was glued to a reddit thread where a bunch of people were trying to figure out what was going on and why suddenly everyone couldn't play. A lot of people (including myself) were installing on ssds and just didn't have the space left to download another 80 gigs.

There was a guy from the coalition posting and trying to offer suggestions to people while they tried to figure out what was wrong. He said he was on the horn with micrsoft store people trying to get it resolved. I don't know if that ever happened though cause since I didnt have double the games hd space to "patch" I just deleted it and re-downloaded the whole 80 gigs, hoping that the new download would be the updated version of the game and it was. So if you're still in this boat, that's what worked for me.

Course, the whole time there was an angry mob shouting for the burning of the windows store and why don't you just release it on steam (a store that actually works etc etc)

But I get it. It's early days for the windows10 store and there's bound to be issues until they get it working like a well oiled machine. It isn't like steam functioned as well as it does today when it first launched.

@huntad: Yeah, leaving story threads hanging for later installments is something that's really starting to get on my nerves lately. I haven't played any Gears 4 yet, but it's been an annoying trend recently at the movies where things are conceptualized as a trilogy and the individual parts increasingly don't stand on their own. Sounds like video games are starting to get into it, too.

@rtoast: I didn't even get that far. Bought the game a few days after release so the 80 gig updated version was my download. After four attempts that aborted halfway through, I spoke to a nice customer service rep and refunded my purchase. I am still looking forward playing gears, just going to wait till some of the store problems are fixed.

I'm nearing the end of Act IV playing co-op with a friend, and we both kind of hate the campaign. Are we missing something? The pacing is wonky, the new enemy types don't offer a lot, most of the encounter design keeps repeating itself (here, fight this boss twice, now this one). Horde has been tons of fun, but the campaign has actually been pretty miserable for us. Are most of you all digging it? Not sure if I'm off-base here.

Spoilers throughout, so I'll just spoil-tag everything after this line.

My problem is with the ending. Everything leading up until the last act kind of made me feel like I was making real progress. But when assaulting the dam, and Marcus mentions the existence of hundreds, maybe thousands, of burial sites, it made my heart sink, because I knew there was no way I'd be getting an ending, but instead a stopping point. Then, to bring that point home, you get the mechs, just to make it to the major hive/nest, rescue the mom, then it just ends...Like, I wanted so much more, but it just stopped. Not even a terrible resolution...there just wasn't one.

With regard to the microtransactions "it's still a bummer" seems like a huge understatement. A lot of the abilities that are vital to play horde at harder difficulties (Things like "double damage" and "double health" and "double ammo capacity" being obvious examples) are only available as random drops from buying ridiculously overpriced loot crates, and it's only possible to use multiple abilities at once after spending dozens of hours grinding with each class.

I thought this would, at most, get 3 stars, as Jeff is generally aligned with my own opinions on games. Shocked to see it get 4 stars, as Gears 4 is easily the most boring gears game out of the four in the series (not counting that one release). The devs spent a bunch of time saying you won't fight the Locust, then get your hopes up in the first act of the game, only to (after a terrific "boss" fight on motorcycles), dump you right back into the same formula over and over. It's a slow slog with very little story, the same kinds of enemies from the first games, and predictable encounters. I was incredibly excited to play this, and now I have no plans to buy future games in the series. So sad.

at it's core, there is absolutely nothing present in Gears 4 that fans of the previous 3 can't get or haven't seen already. absolutely nothing. just pop in GoW3 and *boom*, you just saved yourself $60.

the sheer degree or depth of mediocrity this game exudes (from the insultingly stupid & forgettable campaign, characters, dialogue & music) is not just disappointing, it's actually disturbing. disturbing because this game obviously wasn't made in a week. it took years, hundreds of people and millions & millions of dollars. and that this was the best they could do should have everyone terrified.

it's almost as if the people who were hired to make this game were hired on one condition: they weren't even aware of this franchise's prior existence, let alone 'not having played any of it'.

if you're a fan who's played all three or even just 'GoW3' & was hoping this game would reintroduce the franchise as one of the pillars of this console like the original had been for the 360, then this is the worst possible kind of game. it's a game that screams 'yea, we have no idea what to do with this franchise but, hey, here's more of the same you played & got tired of years ago with prettier graphics'.

it's an instantly-forgettable 3 out 5.

Solid review for a solid game.

Playing the game with Xbox owners should be an option. Why not just go all the way if you put crossplay into your game? I've been playing with a controller on PC and I had no troubles beating keyboard and mouse players.

This.

I've been using a controller on PC as well and haven't had any issues. People have really been exaggerating how much of a disadvantage that console players would be at against PC players. They should at the very least add this option to the social quick play playlist to increase the already low player count.

Especially for a games like Gears.

Gears (at least the multiplayer) doesn't have much in the way of verticality, it's all flat plains with the occasional staircase - you can go entire matches without even touching the Y-axis on your stick and still be at the top of the scoreboard. You're right that in this instance the mouse/controller divide is suuuper small, but Gears is an exception. Try playing a more standard PC shooter - even one with relatively simple mechanics like Overwatch - with a controller and the handicap is immediately apparent.

@three0nefive: Oh I fully realize Gears is not your typical shooter in this regard. Of course a twitchy shooter like Overwatch is better with a mouse. I was simply pointing out the movement mechanics in Gears are tuned for a controller and would seem awkward (to me) with a keyboard.

the sheer degree or depth of mediocrity this game exudes (from the insultingly stupid & forgettable campaign, characters, dialogue & music) is not just disappointing, it's actually disturbing. disturbing because this game obviously wasn't made in a week. it took years, hundreds of people and millions & millions of dollars. and that this was the best they could do should have everyone terrified.

if you're a fan who's played all three or even just 'GoW3' & was hoping this game would reintroduce the franchise as one of the pillars of this console like the original had been for the 360, then this is the worst possible kind of game. it's a game that screams 'yea, we have no idea what to do with this franchise but, hey, here's more of the same you played & got tired of years ago with prettier graphics'.

it's an instantly-forgettable 3 out 5.

First off I've never played much Gears, but honing off nonsense like you're spitting here just proves that you're angry that you made a bad buy. You should know that the gaming industry spends trillions of dollar each year on games that are probably way worse than this - and nobody cares. Remember Legendary or You are Empty? Probably not, but they're just as qualified in this mediocre pool as this high profile game made by (according to other reviews) people who understands what make GoW the series it is.

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion of course, but imo It's disturbing if this post is the best you could do - since there's a lot of things you're simply being ignorant to.
