After Yokoi left the company in 1996, the Nintendo Research & Engineering division was created and Okoda stepped in as the GM where he was a key figure in keeping Yokoi's design philosophies alive when designing the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS. He went into retirement sometime between 2009-2010 after the Nintendo DSi XL hit the market.
