Protagonist or Antagonist?
Due to the rather interesting situation created by the show, it is disputed whether Shinn or
Kira Yamato should be considered the protagonist of
Gundam SEED Destiny. This question is handled on a game-to-game basis: games like
Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs. Gundam and
SD Gundam G Generation Wars consider Shinn the main character (with the latter going so far as to label Kira the primary antagonist), while
Super Robot Wars Scramble Commander the 2nd and
Super Robot Wars K treat Kira as the protagonist.
Super Robot Wars Z resolves this issue by splitting the game's cast in half: one half, consisting of characters such as
Amuro Ray,
Kouji Kabuto,
Kappei Jin, and
Loran Cehack, supports Shinn and the
Minerva, while the other half, including
Roger Smith,
Garrod Ran,
Renton Thurston, and
Ryouma Nagare,
supports Kira and the
Archangel. This ultimately results in a scenario where the two teams fight each other. Afterwards, ZEUTH decides to side with the
Archangel and, unless certain conditions are met, Shinn and the
Minerva become enemies until the final episodes of the game. Shinn's Destiny Gundam appears on SRWZ's boxart, however, implying that he is considered the overall protagonist of
SEED Destiny.
