if this ep doesn't end in a new number 1 or should I say, No. 1, then I don't know what science is for.

also the grapple system is pretty deep. I remember you could go back and forth on who had control and that you could also kind of roll out of a throw so it would either minimize or completely nullify the damage.

for the chicken guy there was either a move of combo that ends with him pecking at the opponent.

They didn’t even bother to look up any moves for Tobal no 1 like they usually do.

That second game looked so pleasant and fun.

I fucking loved Pocket Fighter as a kid.

I have more exposure to the Street Fighter and Darkstalkers characters from Pocket Fighter than any other game.

@dasakamov: Posted for posterity. The recent Samurai Shodown game is a perfect example of opinions changing. Ben changed his mind quickly after the quick look.

Ah the fighting game gems, and by that i dont mean the gems in the game, but how great pocket fighter really is. It technical and funny looking and above all the scenarios are lively, what a great game.

Reviews are subjective opinion. This is cold hard science.

Tobal No.1 had a cool Dragon Ball Z ad in its instruction manual that had screenshots from later parts of the series that hadn't aired in the US yet, which was the most intriguing thing in the world to me back then, especially as it was during the time that Toonami was only playing the Saiyan and part of the Namek arc on loop.

Can always use a little science on Monday mornings.

Glad that Pocket Fighter seems to have held up! I used to love that game as a kid. I probably played that more than some of the street fighter alpha games on the PS1, honestly. It's just so charming and it's neat to have a bunch of darkstalkers characters in there too, which don't get as much exposure.

I'm so glad TMNT is finally out of the top 10. I really don't get the love for it at all, especially as somebody who loved the TMNT franchise growing up. The game just wasn't that fun to play.

Tobal 2 is the superior Tobal.

Never actually played Tobal. Closest I came was Ehrgheiz (and apparently) The Bouncer. Gameplay seems a bit funky, but the visuals held up surprisingly well and those load times were ridiculous. Would be interested in how good that can look if made "better" as it were

Also, Jericho from Seven Deadly Sins is totally a dead ringer for Epon (?).

I feel like Pocket Fighter has really turned around in peoples eyes over the years.

Pocket Fighter is so damn good. Ben is right that a modern version of that game (hopefully with an equally inspired art style, closer to Guilty Gear 2020 than SF4/5) with a handful of new characters and slightly more depth here and there would be amazing. Especially if it was priced and pitched as a more lowkey sort of game, I think it could be really successful.

Tobal No 1 is one of those games that gave The Kings of 3D (Tekken/VF) some real serious competition. The animation was YEARS ahead of its time.

I remember thinking Tobal No. 1 was a crazy name, and then Tobal 2 came out with a normal name and that felt crazy for a follow up.

The mid 90's were a crazy time.

I really hope one day they wet their beaks on Fighter Maker because no fighting game has the complexity or depth of that artifact of gaming past.

The result is a fighting game that is so sickeningly basic and painstakingly derivative that even Capcom diehards should stay away.

Fun fact. Pocket Fighters was released in the Capcom Fighting Collection.
