Already listened to this episode twice. Great stuff guys, don't let anyone tell you you're doing it wrong!

The dinosaurs are there because in Dragon Ball's Universe, they just never died out. The planet they live on is a fictional Earth with a completely different history.

Also, Akira Toriyama seems to just enjoy drawing dinosaurs. See Chrono Trigger, for example.

The early parts of DBZ are really whacky. Doesn't become full men shouting and shooting fireballs at each other until Frieza saga.

one point of clarification in your doc: "Goku and Bulma have never had a romantic interest. When they met, Goku was a little kid and Bulma was a teenager going on adult. She was the first human beside his grandfather that Goku had ever met, and didn’t even know what women were. Bulma did date Yamcha before she realized he’s a bum."

I want to say that the age difference is only two years?

edit: looks like the age difference is only three years. Goku is 13 and Bulma is 16 in original Dragon Ball?

Thumbs up for 5 episodes -- it does start fast but even Kais pacing slows down and I think 3 episodes might lead to a lot of Namek frustrations. This is my favourite thing on the site and I'm so happy y'all are going for it.

but for real if this anti-Krillin chat continues I'm going to be quite upset. He is the absolute boy.

Picollo's history will sorta be explained next arc but stuff you missed is king picollo and kame are actually the same person who split himself in half (one good one bad) so he could become pure enough to be kame(i think). So picollo jr is kind of a clone of king picollo but not 100% so he is never 100% evil but still pretty evil.

Still enjoying these even though i remember nothing from the series.

Raditz didn't lie. Goku was indeed sent to kill everyone on Earth, but also at the same time planet Vegeta was about to be destroyed.

This was the point of the series where Toriyama had no idea what to do with Krillin, and thankfully he wrote him back into relevance with the second half of the Saiyan arc and the Freeza arc. I imagine Jeff and Dan will feel better about him after seeing Krillin as a main character, not just background fluff.

The original Dragon Ball scene where it was shown that he could regrow his arm was way more metal about it, and I believe it is required viewing for all people.

@lacke: Obviously it depends on the anime and the specific filler episode, but enough of them do a good job of fleshing out characters and relationships, especially what are generally minor characters, that I wouldn't throw them all away like that. Just cherry pick good ones.

Krillin was always cool.

So, I gotta ask. Is Krillen's lack of a nose ever explained in any Dragon Ball series?

@frytup: Nope, but he definitely doesn't have one. During one of the tournaments, he's going up against a guy whose power is basically that he's really stinky. So stinky that anyone that tries to fight him just collapses due to the odor. Krillin is losing against him because of the smell, then Goku tells Krillin "Krillin, remember: you don't have a nose!" and Krillin goes "wait, you're right!" and proceeds to beat him without any problems since he was no longer affected by the smell.

Dragonball is silly.

The worst thing about almost anything worth enjoying tend to be the same fans of that thing.

This is legit the greatest thing since Metal Gear Scanlon. Made even better by the fact that I haven't watched any DBZ in like over a decade. I watched the whole thing on Cartoon Network back in the day, so the guys watching it for the first time is bringing all kinds memories back. Teenage me did not realize how absurd this show is.

It´s just great listening to Jeff and Dan being exposed to, and enjoying, the weirdness of Dragonball!

This has actually been recently retconned. Which I think makes it all the funnier to me how Jeff´s suspicions have been changed to be correct, just within the last few years.

According to this retcon, which is called Dragon Ball Minus: departure of the fated child, Sending Saiyan "babies" (Goku is stated to be 3 years old) to other planets as "infiltration babies" is a thing that Saiyans did. However Goku´s parents sends Goku off in secret because Goku´s father Bardock has become suspicious of Freiza after he orders all the deployed Saiyans back to their home planet. Goku´s mother Gine lets Raditz know that he´s been sent away to Earth. Raditz just doesn´t know that it wasn´t with the intention of destroying its population, as was usually done.

Thanks for the confirmation on that. I vaguely recalled this stretch of the show taking forever when I first tried to watch the show on TV back in the 90's and pushing me off the show. For a kid trying to watch the show in a standard daily, after school basis it was painful. I gave up on it because I spent weeks going home and trying to tune in for the big showdown and instead Goku was still stuck on Snake Way.

All the little bits of trivia and what happened in Dragonball really aren't that important. You guys are totally fine and way ahead of where I was in terms of what I knew going into the series. I started in the middle of the Namek saga, had no idea what a Saiyan was or who Goku or Vegeta were. Managed to catch up and fill in all the blanks eventually by going back and watching DB and early DBZ, it's all good.

In regards to Chi-Chi, if Jeff doesn't like her now wait until the Androids/Cell sagas. Oh boy, she is the fun police in this series.

So, in Dragon Ball, Bulma had assumed Goku was like 6 years old until she asked his age. When he said he was 13 she was shocked. I think at that point in the manga it was supposed to be unclear if Goku was actually smart enough to count and whether or not he actually knew his real age. I'm not sure if that age he gave, which at the time seemed like a joke, was eventually just accepted as the canon age or not. It's interesting because Goten and Trunks are also drawn as "children" at ages when one would think they'd be drawn as older. It could be a retcon that part of Saiyans aging slowly is that they look like kids longer. But it's just as likely that Toriyama just liked the character designs and kept them that way for a long time. You really have to take the MST3K intro song approach to the show when it comes to specifics like that.

I looked up episode summaries to remind myself what happens in the next 5, and I'll just say that All Systems Goku #3 will be a banger.

I mean, yeah, but also I remember seeing Gohan being semi-competent in that scene with the dinosaur (which I seem to remember being a time skip in Z as well) being a massive payoff. Here it's... cool, I guess?

I am really shocked at how fast Kai moves. Some of this felt like a huge deal at the time and now it's just a thing that happens. It's cool to hear the guys react to it at this pace.

I'd also add that Raditz isn't lying or would you say that's a spoiler still?

A Japanese culture question for anyone who can answer. "Research" (wikipedia) tells me that Kami is a general term in Shinto for nature spirits and/or deities. Is the Kami being mentioned in DBZ actually supposed to be a specific god, or they just not translating the Japanese concept very well?
