All this Krillin or Yamcha talk made me upload the part where they talked about this on the beastcast:

Skype audio was definitely a downgrade, but it wasn't too bad. Can't wait for the next podcast!

This podcast has made me realize that Jeff and Dan really did develop a good comedic rapport during their SF days that I miss.

No it isn't. They removed the blood and some scratches for almost everything during the whole series on Kai. On some scenes like that one they removed everything and in others they only removed some of it, but the work was done overall and just not on that particular scene.

This is a comparison between uncut Kai and the Nickelodeon broadcast, there's some minor censorship in parts but there's still plenty of blood in Kai. The bloodiness of the Raditz scene was an embellishment on the anime's part and Kai is closer to the manga in that regard.

RE: Yamcha merchandise

There are figures of Yamcha's death to the Saibaman. I'll let that speak for itself.

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite features on the site. It takes me back to when I would watch DBZ when I was a kid, and it's great to hear Jeff and Dan be so enthusiastic about the show.

@TechnoSyndrome: I don't have any solid evidence for this, but I would wager that a lot of the blood removal was at Toriyama's request, purely based on the fact that he's less partial to gratuitous violence than people assume.

I cannot listen to talk of Vegeta's voice and not say that Brian Drummond is the true English Vegeta voice

It's also still at the end of the day a series intended for children/teens, and Japan's ideas of what is appropriate for that age has changed in the last few decades. You don't get series like Fist of the North Star in Shonen Jump anymore.

@johnymyko: this is funny because you’re comparing Uncut Kai vs Cut Kai here.

@sicmaggot: Didn't even know there was Uncut Kai and Cut Kai. I thought there was just Kai. I only followed Kai along as it was airing on Japan originally.

On second thought, I'm deleting the Google Doc. I feel bad that Jeff and Dan are getting showered with a torrent of DB trivia and opinions, and I don't wanna annoy them any more than it sounds like it has.

Chris Sabat's voice acting is great for Piccolo and Vegeta (and Mr. Popo).

@scallycap: The thing about the Google doc is that it's Jeff and Dan's choice to look at it if that's what they want. It can just exist and if they ever get the urge to check it out, they can. It's not like they're getting notified every time there's an addition (hopefully).

The moon gets blown up somewhat regularly in Dragon Ball. Earthlings are probably used to it by now.

Yeah maybe, I watched the entirety of DBZ when i was a kid/teenager with the french dub version which was entirely uncut and also had i believe a different soundtrack. I think it was the japanese ost.

I like the Skype audio. It makes it feel like I’m listening in to a call-in radio show about dbz!

@johnymyko: There are a couple of shots that have differences in blood in Uncut Kai but I think it’s mostly intact. Super is the one that doesn’t have a lot of blood haha.

I think Gohan is a constant disappointment and uncool character, but I can't say he's not effective when it counts. Well. Most of the time.

Part of me was very much expecting Nappa to yell out "Faaake Neeeews!!!" during that one part.

Also Yamcha's alright. He's one of the more likeable characters in OG Dragonball. He definitely gets the shaft in Kai though. Without context it does seem like he's only there to get killed off immediately.

"Killing one Saibaman seems like a good use of Yamcha." Good god, it's like Dan's already been watching since childhood.

Wait how does Nappa even know what the media is? I'm going to assume this is just another dub thing that wasn't in the original JPN version.

Because he was born and grew up in an advanced space-faring culture; regardless, does it matter in the grand scheme of things?

The tides would be fine unless the moon got completely vaporized. The mass would still be up there otherwise.

It's sorta his arc, he does get his moment to shine way later at the climax of the cell saga, which to me is in the top 3 of best moments in the entire Z series.

I tried too... at episode 62 in the early parts of the Android saga. I also watched the Garlic Jr saga from DBZ which was cut from Kai after finishing the Frieza saga. I've already seen all of DBZ when it first aired in the US on Toonami, but have not seen all of Kai. I think I saw up to the Frieza saga when Kai first aired. I'm totally loving this podcast. Glad they decided to check out this series, they seem to be genuinely really enjoy it.

In the original US English dub Nappa says "OKAY, SHOW'S OVER!". When watching in Japanese, the subtitles say "You guys are a blight! Away with you!"

The dub, in all of its incarnations, is NOTORIOUS for punching up some of the script to add more "modern" or "western" humor. Some people hate that, others completely love it. I think it's hit or miss and the "I HATE THE MEDIA" line is a total miss. It's distractingly absurd. That's not to say some other other jokes FUNimation has created and added haven't been pretty great.

When I decided to watch along with this podcast (I've seen next week's 5 episodes too now), with only vague memories of the original run, I thought I was really going to enjoy the fights and that the other stuff (the comedy, the training, etc.) would be lame.

Instead, it's the complete opposite. The inbetween stuff is fantastic, while the fights themselves are mostly pretty disappointing (I agree with Jeff's critiques).

I actually really like the English voice of Vegeta now. I'm listening to the English audio for the first time and he gets some really good monologues and 1-on-1 exchanges, both in this and the next "saga".

I don't know why, but I feel like they really love the title of their own podcast. Just a weird itch or something. Maybe they've brought it up once or twice.

@danryckert Chiaotzu is from the original Dragon Ball. Why he looks that way never gets explained. He's presumably a normal human that just happens to look like a doll because OG Dragon Ball was WEIRD.

The whole cloths out of thin air thing is kinda easy to understand once you consider people like superman ramming into buildings or hit by bullets without a scratch on his outfit unless hit super hard. A anime called bleach explained it a bit like this. The cloths are a part of their energy. It explains why they transform and sometimes change outfits. They literally enhance their cloths or are making a barrier out of cloth like material from their ki. Their ki goes down so does their scratches or cloths. This is why you can tell goku is in trouble when he goes frontal nudity and has a bunch of scratches. Also DC comics explains it as a barrier around superman that protects his cloths as if they are also enhanced in strength. I think hunter x hunter does it best with people surrounding parts of their body with nen or a type of ki to fend off bullets. No nen then your shot and will receive harsh damage. DBZ characters are assumed to always have some barrier around them so normal hits dont hurt. This is why when relaxed goku can be damaged by beam fire or guns. Hes even shown later to focus energy to block swords with his finger. Essentially tien got hurt when hit by nappa cause his thin barrier of protection around his body was not strong enough to fend off nappas as shown during the show.

I think they still got it wrong but its closer than I ever would have thought.

@efesell: Yeah. I think they were kinda off, but they'll sort it out a bit better once they get to the flashbacks of Kami/Piccolo when Popo takes Bulma to his ship.

I remember being pretty into Yamcha as a kid.

He looked similar to Goku, same kind of Gi, but with a wilder appearance. Hell, his hair could hint towards him being a secret Saiyan or something.

Tien is a badass warrior monk with 3 eyes and a tribeam. Krillin has an awesome electric disc. But what is Yamcha's 'thing'? Why is he worthy of that orange gi? It captivated me.

I figured that he would be the kind of guy that starts out as a 'first to die' type of guy, but eventually shows how rediculously strong he is. The reason why he wears similar clothes to Goku.

That was an awesome post. The clothes always bugged me a little bit, but this ki-barrier explanation makes total sense. Weird that they decided to show aura's in the show, but never really got into the defense-barrier idea.

I also started rewatching with the podcast, this is great!
