@garwalk: @hawkef16: @miceman64: Taking a look at the scene in OG DBZ in Japanese, he says "目障りだ!消え失せろ! (Mezawari da! Kieusero!) ” - which literally translates to something like "You eyesores! Disappear!"

The best character arc on this site has been Dan Ryckert going from disliking anime but loving wrestling, to gradually realising that professional wrestling is basically just LARPers performing an anime.

I think Gohan is a constant disappointment and uncool character, but I can't say he's not effective when it counts. Well. Most of the time.

Gohan does and becomes some bad ass teen during the Cell Games but then hangs his warrior coat to become what Goku has not, being very good dad.

I think they should do 10 episodes a week, especially if Jeff thinks the fights/episodes are slowing down and Dan would watch the entire series in 2 days if he had no reason to restrain himself.

Only if they want too of course.

Also i was just watching an later episode and noticed that Mr. Popo got really pointy ears and is strong enough to hold of 2 supersaiyan kids for a short while so he is 100% not human but some magical creature that is portrayed kind of wise and strong. Not wanting to start an entire Mr Popo debate, but not being from the US i never saw him as a #$%$^%* problem or some racist caricature. Context matters i guess. Always interesting to notice cultural differences and the context surrounding them.

Of course i 100% understand where Jeff and Dan are coming from.

Is Jeff watching the subs or the dubs? Because Vegeta's voice is over the top in the dubs.

Dragon Ball FighterZ has one of my absolute favorite bits of Yamcha content that seems highly relevant at this time.

@ravelle, @redhotchilimist: I've always said "Dragon Ball is about Goku, but DBZ is about Gohan." Yes, Goku is still ostensibly the main protagonist in Z, but he literally spends half of the 200+ episodes dead, missing, or dying of heart disease, whereas we witness Gohan grow from being a crying little child to an adult and even a parent, and actually surprassing Goku in strength at least a couple times along the way. He's one of my favorite characters in all of Dragon Ball.

I'm rewatching DBZ along with them and binging through Super at the same time and it's funny that this early on Jeff and Dan have already managed to point out most of the cost-saving measures/filler that Dragon Ball shovels into it's fight scenes.

This is going to sound like some anime snob bullshit but, ironically, I think fight scenes are one of Dragon Ball's weak points. You've got the close ups of someone dodging punches and dishing some out, but they have about five frames of animation looped over and over again. There's of course the mandatory break in combat every five seconds so that someone can gawk over power levels. And the biggest bullshit of all: "They're moving so fast I can't even see them!", I hope y'all like looking at shots of empty sky with some small impact effects popping up here and there.

Luckily, Super has had some decent animation during key moments and the fights themselves are over pretty quick. I hope the fights in Kai won't end up being as filler-y as I remember them being, Dragon Ball really suffers from being one of these marathon series that airs every week nonstop for years.

I don't disagree, but anime "old timers" tell me that the Dragon Ball fight scenes used to be groundbreaking back in the day because at least they were actually (mostly) animated. Back then other animes pulled that 'cool still image moving across the screen once or repeatedly' crap all the time to cut costs. I've found it true now that I've watched some of that stuff. Chris Stuckmann explained this much better in his Dragon Ball Z review on his channel.

Yes, but it's also just absolutely amazing and has become iconic to many. If we are talking about Chris Sabat's Funimation dub performance. He doesn't voice the classic "over 9000" meme (Ocean dub?) though, I can't remember that guy's name off the top of my head.

Edit: and they're both watching dubs.

The end of Kai episode 11 sounds like it pretty much lines up with uncut episode 28. Which probably means they cut this gag where Chichi goes Rambo with Launch's guns. Since it seems like they cut Launch out of Kai I guess that makes sense.

They cut back to the Kame House a lot during the fights for reactions and gags.

Yeah, the fights back then were more than we got from shows like batman TAS at the time etc. Episode to episode you were getting atleast 3 quick moving superman like fights and at the time that was enough. Animators have a limit to how much they can use per episode. I think its like 15,000 pictures with a 100,000 budget in japan. The US provided about 2-4 million for the final episodes of Avatar the airbender for comparison. They are awfully under budget and over worked so its a pain to hear comments on youtube calling out animators for being lazy. A episode with fluid scenes is give and take so expect stills. Today with computers we can fill in stuff and get more out of it so in comparison dbz will seem lame now fight wise.

Many shows have surpassed them in how fluid and detailed their fights get. I hope they try attack on titan since that plot moves and has fluid fights.

Look up Madara vs alliance, One punch man final fight, Pride vs fullmetal alchemist stuff like that for some of the fluid stuff shows are capable of now. These dbz episodes are noticeable hand drawn (computers can fill in a ton of your work these days). DBZ really isnt king theses days anymore but it earned its respect. T

I actually really like the English voice of Vegeta now. I'm listening to the English audio for the first time and he gets some really good monologues and 1-on-1 exchanges, both in this and the next "saga".

Edit: Oh man, them correctly explaining the Kami/Picollo/Picollo Jr. situation! <3

I think they still got it wrong but its closer than I ever would have thought.

Yeah, near the end they fucked it up. But the actual timeline was in there somewhere.

Remember playing sports, when you were young and you made a best friend on your team? As you and your friend grew older, it became clear that he was much more gifted than you. Yet he still wanted to be friends with you and still wanted you on his side when it came time to pick teams.

Cheers, to all the Krillins out there and the Gokus who put up with us.

The sad thing about how pathetic Yamcha and the B Team Brigade end up looking is that really by the point that they fight Nappa, they're God-like beings by Earth standards. Stronger by a factor of 10 than any other pure-blooded human in history, they can fly and shoot energy beams and guns are a mild annoyance at best against them. They're like Superman without the Kryptonite weakness.

The power levels just scale so fast in this show that they rarely get any chances to shine past the original Dragon Ball. But it's a fun thought experiment that Nappa-era Yamcha could waltz through all the bad guys in the original Dragon Ball, defeating the ancient unsealed Demon King Piccolo in his spare time. That's a show I'd find amusing to watch.

@csl316: The part you're talking about comes from the Buu saga, which was Kai edited but direct to Blu-ray. Since it didn't air on Japanese TVs the toning down of blood wasn't necessary.

@dragooncody: There was a 3 comic joke manga about a kid who played a Dragon Ball phone game dying and being reincarnated as Yamcha. He uses all of his story meta-knowledge to become super powerful by going through all the training Goku and Krillen did during Dragon Ball that Yamcha skipped out on to fuck Bulma and play Baseball, then before the Saiyajins arrived he used Kami-sama's spaceship to fly to Namek ahead of time to have his dormant powers unlocked by Guru and train with Nail for 6 months. Then once they do arrive he defeats all 6 Saibamen at once no problem, kills Nappa, and then assists Goku on nearly equal footing to defeat Vegeta making sure that none of the Z fighters die in the process. When Vegeta is trying to leave the planet, he has an urge to kill him so that he won't have competition for Bulma's affection in the future, but then thinks about how cool Vegeta becomes later and realizes that he'd also be preventing Trunks from being born and can't bring himself to do it. By the time the Cell Games come around, he realizes that even with all of his meta knowledge and cheats he'll still never be strong enough to keep up with the escalating power levels and decides to retire.

Although I prefer the original DBZ uncut dvds, I can completely understand why they are going with Kai, I've been following along with the original dub, and there is certainly a lot of filler... Going to be watching the Kai version along with Dan and Jeff now. I always needed a excuse to check it out anyways

Ps. it's just a quick Google search away on the ps4 browser.

PPS. Check out My Hero Academia

PPPS. I can't stand Kid Gohans voice in the Kai dub

@ouchmyfingers: couple of things. I think the new Gohan voice fits him better at 4-5 like he is in the show. He’s supposed to be annoying, compare it to the Japanese version. I also think she’s a much better actor. She does subtly lower his voice for Cell but he’s still only supposed to be 9-10 there too.
