I do enjoy how these videos have linked to Mega Man V instead of 5. At first I thought it was a joke description until I remembered the weird Gameboy spinoffs.

Kinda surprised Abby didn't know OK Computer. It's probably one of the most famous albums in the last 20 years.

It's probably time for us 29+ people to retire and listen to that album on our Discman until we die.

20 years ago, Abby was what, four? I couldn't tell you the name of, oh let's say Bruce Springsteen's biggest album, and I've had an extra 15 years of life to learn it.

@kevin_cogneto: OK Computer was released in the same year that Mmbop was. I was 8 years old in 1997. I can guarantee that in '97 I was listening to Mmbop and not OK Computer. It wasn't probably until middle or high school that I really started to explore actual music. My point is, the album is 20 years old. That's 20 years you have to listen to it. But not only has she not listened to it, she didn't know who recorded it. That's what surprised me. Even if I don't like a famous artist, I'm more than likely at minimum going to recognize their album's name.

It's impossible to choose my favorite 90's album because that was the sweet spot for me in terms of buying a lot of albums. The ones that first come to mind (that I still listen to regularly): Veruca Salt - American Thighs; Alice in Chains - Jar of Flies; Days of the New - Yellow Album

Their conversations about music make me realize that, despite living there when I was a kid, I know almost nothing about American music.

I think Metallica was the only band I even recognized the name of.

I'm 33, and had to look up who recorded OK Computer. I never bothered to find out the names of Radiohead's albums, because after hearing them on the radio, I decided I wasn't interested in hearing any more of their music.

My friend is a film professor; he says the rule of thumb is that you can't expect students to have seen any movie made more than seven years ago, regardless of how famous or important it is.

I love most of what you guys do, but this show needs a format change. It's obvious that there isn't enough going on in Megaman to engage a full panel of four, but maybe a smaller audience section would make for a better outcome? I just know the off-topic rambling wasn't really such a big issue during Vinnie-Vania

I'll refer you to the load our last souls series. Vinny proved here he is a master at being hilarious while working through tough gameplay.

Absolutely! I was pretty sour on last weeks episode for this reason, but putting it on in the background and completely ignoring the video made me enjoy it 100% more. something of a midweek Beastcast that has Alex doing something else for 2 hours.

I dunno, I like this series as I've never played a Mega Man in my life, so I get to see the games while the gang talk amongst themselves; the random chat while doing something else schtick GBE are leaning into is probably the best stuff out of the site atm?

I think your top-level enjoyment depends on how you feel about the game they're murdering while doing it. So good thing there's a variety, Mega Man, Sunshine, XCOM, Yakuza just finished, I think that's a good spread out of one office.

Albums aren't really as much of a thing though anymore, are they? The last album I can remember the name of is My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy which Google tells me came out 7 years ago. Before that... I dunno, my knowledge of albums kinda cuts out around the early-mid 2000s because I started to listen to everything online.

But I would say that OK Computer is pretty essential listening, the same way it's worth watching Casablanca or Godfather even if it's not your jam just because they were so culturally relevant.

Although typing this out, I realize it's very tough to come up with a list of essentials. Like from my perspective watching the Tonight, Tonight video on MTV was HUGE at the time. But I have no idea how that carries over now. And the east coast/west coast rap thing isn't really a thing anymore. And it feels like a lot of people have replicated the Blue Album and Pinkerton thing since they came out. I dunno. But damn I feel old, haha.

Teaching college undergraduates has taught me not to assume anything about their pop culture knowledge. Last quarter, in a class of around 330, we had about 10 who knew what The Matrix was. Then I remembered that movie is twenty years old and that even I haven't seen it in over a decade.

In a couple years, incoming college freshman will have been born post 9/11. Even my students now don't have any memories of it, and even stuff that's so vivid in my memories like the Iraq War they barely have any recollection of. So even major events of the past 20 years barely mean anything to a lot of them.

Point being, spending a good portion of your day with people under the age of 22 makes you aware pretty quickly that a good portion of them don't know or care about any of the music, games, television, or movies you grew up with. I'm 28, but I feel like an old man around a lot of them.
