Dan, I haven't listened to this yet, but Tool is way better than anything on Rebel Radio.

I've heard Dan doesn't like a lot of types of music, is this true? Surely this can't be true, he's been so open minded about it up to this point!

Tool hate? Now I've heard it all...Tool is the best band of all time and that is undisputed. Lateralus is a masterpiece.

Tool is not a "turn on some background music" type of band. Some people don't like that and that's ok. Their songs generally follow a progression that ebbs and flows that releases after a buildup. If you miss the previous sections then the impact is lessened. I could care less about the lyrics, I just like the music because it sounds different than anything else out there. Another reason why I like them is that each instrument compliments the others unlike any other band. The guitar is not just chugging away nonstop. The guitar can sit back while the bass and drums do their thing.

I also play bass and the bass lines are varied and very fun to play.

The "you're just not smart enough to appreciate how genius they are" argument is one of my favorite hits from the Tool fan base.

Really? That's too bad. I saw QOTSA open for NIN (I think in Minneapolis?) and the crowd seemed to eat it up. Josh Homme was being his regular old self, making fun of most of the crowd and got entertainingly pissed off when some asshole threw a shoe on the stage.

Yeah, at the Wilkes-Barre show I went to, he tried pulling the same sort of thing of publicly shaming some asshole that was punching people in the moshpit, but the crowd totally turned on him and was real rough for the rest of the set. Just felt like two totally different groups of fans - I was there largely for QOTSA and pretty much left three or four songs into NIN because I wasn't super into it.

@danryckert: Yeah, I'm sure that aspect of the Tool fan base has contributed more than anyone else in turning people off their favourite band.

This is like the 10th time Dan has mentioned he doesn't like Tool on GB.

EDIT: I don't care, Tool suck. I thought they died when illegal Napster went under.

Man, I forgot about Tool. Never done that with Zeppelin or Floyd, weird how that works.

Tool is my favorite band, but I also couldn't care less what anyone else thinks about them.

Haven't listened to the podcast yet but the amount of people in the comments bitching about someone not liking a band reminds me why I hate most of the internet.

This an advice podcast. Not a music appreciation podcast. So what Dan doesn't like Tool. I've heard him talk shit about Pearl Jam and it doesn't diminish my love for them. Saying some one is just too dumb to like what you like is just plain sad.

I think Tool and NIN live in the same part of my brain labelled "Fantastic bands with terrible fans." Fans ruined both bands for me for a long time, but if you approach their music on its own terms, they are both phenomenal musically and creatively. The way people react to that is a reflection on those people, not the band itself.

why wouldn't he hate a terrible band?

"This band sucks", "no they don't" is right behind "lemme tell you about a dream I had" in terms of most boring and useless things to have a conversation about.

Music is just about the most subjective thing in the world and it consistently amazes me that people a) think I care if they like my favorite band and b) really really need me to like their favorite band.

@xerseslives: But don't you know? If people don't like your favourite band that reflects poorly on both of you. They obviously aren't as smart as you, their taste is questionable and if people find out that someone doesn't like your favourite band then they lose respect for your impeccable taste.
