Man this stuff always makes me laugh they're awesome.
This jerk killed me my first play through as well. I powered through the dunegon thinking I was pro and got wrecked by him. I can't help but give my two cents on this so you can skip the rest of my post now.

Extra boss monsters
A good rule of thumb with them is to just come back after you beat the next dungeon boss.
Then pick up the shiny weapon after you kill them.

Grinding
You don't really need to grind in this game.. All you need to do is finish the current "active" dungeon and try not to avoid fights. Keep your personas updated by fusion and when needed fuse a trump card like you did with the red walling slime. You'll be fine for the most part. Besides grinding pays off a lot more in later dungeons.
You guys probabaly made a good amount of money with this trip. It's not all a bust.

Gameflow
Saving Someone in TV ->Free Time with funky student. That repeats over and over.
As long as you don't have to save anyone in the TV you can work on your social links, fish, do jobs, turn dials. Remember it's  not worth grinding if you aren't getting any worth while exp.  Normally people have new stuff to say before and after a new dungeon, so that'd be a good time to see what's going on with your short haired girls and talkative students.

even the mighty fall sometimes no matter the gaming pedigree.lol yeah guys go and hit up some social links, get your fish on, and perhaps get your smoke on with funky student once again, drama club girl, jobs, etc. above alllll else, Im just eager to see where the story is going to go. we need some more "I loooooooooove them balls" type moments as well as Jeff's commentary gems such as on how the drama chick drank cooking sherry with her instructor and how she wants to be choked and punched in the stomach. stay classy giantbomb.haha   I know this is the 3rd time i think i've said this but you guys gotta go check out funky and see if he has any new words of wisdom.  as a matter of fact I believe jack frost may indeed be the long lost persona of funky student. "I'm jack frost ho !"

Even if you make personas that can help you beat the king, it isn't worth it. Building up social links and stats is the way to go until you can go to the next dungeon.

The experience you get from weak monsters scales down as you probably noticed, so there is no reason to fight anything other than the boss in yukiko's castle. Just come back after you finish the next dungeon.

The boss is not impossible, or even very hard. You need to start using buffs and debuffs or else you are not getting anywhere in the game. At this point though I wouldn't recommend buffs since you probably only have single-character buffs. So focus on the debuffs. If it has an attack that can kill you in one hit, lower it's attack with tarunda. Also lowering his hit/evasion is a great way to avoid damage altogether on occasion.

It's not a good idea to fight this bonus boss yet. Maybe you should grind your way to the top of the bathhouse first. Then come back. You especially need a persona that resists physical.

Tomorrow, if there's nothing better to do, you can go to Aiya's, the Chinese diner at the bottom part of the north half of the shopping district.  It costs a bit, but no more than the persona you just re-bought, and you can get three stat bumps at once.  Beats going to the dungeon yet again, right?

Great advice.  Please don't ignore it, Vinny and Jeff.  There's no reason for you guys to go back into the Castle anytime soon.

Man I love watching these things xD Hope you guys keep playing! Don't give up!
You guys got pretty lucky on the King fight, considering. When I fought it my first time it immediately started with RAMPAGE after Red Wall before I could even think of a strategy to use on it. It's probably best to leave it alone until the next dungeon opens and you gain a few levels. It's POSSIBLE to beat it now...but that hinges more on luck and reading what people suggested you do xP Mostly luck.

A bit of advice time!

People have already given you great strategies, so I'm only gonna give you a little piece of advice...

STOP IGNORING YOUR SUPPORT SKILLS

If the enemy brings your defense down, don't go "lol maybe we should do something" and then put it off or forget about it. It's not ALWAYS necessary to bring it back up, granted, but in a BOSS fight letting them bring down your defense can be nothing but bad becuase of the amount of damage they deal.

In general, lowering a Boss's attack power (Tarunda) and raising your party's evade rate (Sukukaja) is a good recipe. You'll be surprised out how much better you'll do when attacks don't HIT you (and if they do, for not as much damage)

Few things...

After you clear each dungeon for the first time, you can then get quests from townspeople to get specific items for killing enemies on your second run through.

You should be about level 20 before you take on the king again, no hurry.

You need to spend the next week or so working on social links, there won't really be anything else to do.

Make sure you are carrying persona of the corresponding type (Chie = Chariot, etc.) when doing the social links.  It DOES make a difference.

Focus on leveling up the social links of your party over the others, they unlock special abilities for your group.  Wait until you get Chie's Galactic Punt!

Vinny is right about needing Persona about your level.  Do more fusions.

Nice work on Jack Frost.  He is easily your best guy right now.

Best level to beat extra bosses are usually after you did next story dungeon.

I found that, that's when you are at ideal level to tackle them.

It looks like They read the comments after all. They learned how to fuse pretty fast . It's like Jeff and Vinny are starting to have a "Mission Briefing" before each play session to memorize all the tips and mistakes from the comments :) The battle with the boss was brutal and They got owned pretty bad but I'm glad that didn't stop them and the Endurance Run continues!

by the way. you guys have final fantasy syndrome.
you are convinced that buffs suck. but in this game they make a HUGE difference.
you could have killed that guys easily. very easily with the right buff/ debuffs.
and eat at ayias on a raining day. no joke best stat boost in the game!

Eh, honestly, I don't see why everyone is up in arms about buffs.  While their ma- variants as well as Heat Riser becomes well worth it, single target buff/debuffs are generally not useful outside of boss fights, and even then, you can get by all of them with out it.

Single target -kaja spells (buff to party members) are pretty lame, but single-target -nda (debuff to enemies) spells are best for bosses because there's usually only one of them to worry about.

So basically, you want multi-target -kajas, but single-target -ndas. Since you won't be using debuffs on normal enemies anyway.

@Turambar

-40% damage taken from the boss doesn't sound good? Tarunda kicks ass in all occasions. Even better, sometimes bosses will waste their turn casting Dekunda to clear Tarunda off themselve, then you just cast Tarunda again, and they keep wasting their turn taking your Debuff off. Its DEFINITELY required that you buff/debuff a lot on expert, and ALMOST mandatory for the later boss fights on normal if you don't want to be forced to grind. +40% damage is gotten if you lower their defense, the only buff that isn't quite awesomesauce is sukunda, but its still really nice. I'll agree that sukaja and rakaja are a bit weak since you can't rely on an enemy attacking a single person, but tarukaja is awesome since casting matarukaja it on multiple people is usually wasted SP when they spend their time healing/buffing/removing conditions on everyone else, and you end up with only 1 or 2 characters as your offense.

While the +stat spells aren't that great for normal battles, you can get things like auto-tarukaja and auto-mataru (kaja), which makes your whole party start out  EVERY battle buffed and ready to kick ass. For half the game I worked some fusion magic to get a persona with auto-mataru, auto-masuku, and auto-maraku, starting every battle with an old persona that basically my whole party buffed as if they had casted hear riser, which saved my ass numberous times when the enemy had advantage then blew it as my party dodged almost everything, and I was able to counter and wipe them out in a single turn. And TBH, heat riser is horribly overrated, it costs WAY too much and helps your party overall less then the ma- buff spells.

For the love of God.

Level Slime to 7!!!!!!!!!

Resist Physical is passive trait, so as long as you have Persona that has Resist Physical, you take less damage!!!!! You don't cast anything. You just take less damage.

Not to mention you can pass on that skill as you fuse Persona, and it might be one of the most useful skill in the game.

You guys can overwrite skills when you level up a Persona and it already has 8 skills. So when you level up Jack Frost once and he learns Ice Boost, you can choose to forget Poison Mist to make room. Also, the last two elements on the chart are Light and Darkness, which are both instant-death spells that you should start seeing soon. You guys now have a Persona for both Yosuke's (Jack Frost) and Chie's (Eligor) Arcanas, so you should focus on their Social Links until the next dungeon opens up.

As other people have said, don't ignore the support skills. The boss is way easier if you cast Tarunda (to decrease his attack) and Sukunda (to decrease his chances of hitting you) on him before you start attacking. Dekunda also would have canceled out the defense penalty he put on your entire party at the beginning. Buffs aren't as useful early in the game because you can only cast them on one party member at a time, but they become much more useful when you get the all-party versions later on.

Fun fact: Jack Frost is Atlus's mascot, and shows up in every Shin Megami Tensei game.

Haha this videos caption is exactly what I thought after going back to the castle!

Pretty cool though, I'm at the same point as you guys more or less, although I'm gonna restart the game from scratch as I've been playing the game on an emulator and dealing with numerous sound/graphical bugs so it's gonna be nice to play it on my shiny new PS2 tomorrow.

Persona is so great though, I'm gonna buy the third game when I finish this! Simply fantastic.

Well you weren't really doing anything wrong against the king. The extra bosses are like the high lvl challenge hunts in FFXII . Absolutely devastating! But don't worry... The next 'real' dungeon boss is easier ( because you're forced to grind against harder than in the castle monsters than before, so you'll be ready... IF you think about your decisions outside the dungeon ( Social Link Wise ) and in the velvet room, which you should use as often as possible. ) than the 'contrary king' boss you did in this episode. A general thumb rule is " Don't go after the dungeon 'extra  boss'  before you've done the next dungeon all throughout. And you'll need a phys resistant persona when you go  fight him that dude. AND you'll need to be around lvl 22-23 to have an honest fight so just forget him and go to the next dungeon. But in all honesty 'Contrarian King' is probably THE hardest extra boss in the whole game ( Just look at the damage you did to him. Like trying to blow up a mountain with a firecracker..!)

man i think the thing about all these people posting about how you guys are playing it wrong is sort of silly. I mean this is basically you tryng to figure out everything about the game and almost everything in it is not presented to you in a way that you will either see or even directly translate to what it really does.
