Hi @vinny,

Just a quick 'correction' on the modern Luigi style:

Luigi's slippery running, high jumping characteristics originated in the 1986 Famicom only Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels. So it is said, he was designed as the hard mode, or for skilled players, while Mario ran faster and controlled as expected.

The US release of Super Mario Bros. 2 (Doki Doki Panic) was released in 1988.

The thing the US Super Mario Bros. 2 did introduce, were his wacky crazy legs, and who doesn't like that.

Thanks for all you guys do.

Hugs n Kittens,

Mookal

I really appreciated what it was trying to do with movement, but I disagree.

I normally don’t nitpick things like this, but I’m 90% sure Mike is wrong about the pin on old grenades activating the timer.

Having used (modern) grenades, I believe the time delay still works just like it used to. The lever separating from the body causes the time delay chemical reaction to start, and the pin is only a safety mechanism. Think about it: what purpose would the lever serve if the grenade detonated right after it separates if the pin was pulled too early?

The lever allows one to remove the pin and not immediately have to throw, or to release the lever and “cook” the grenade. Note: this is not recommended - the chemical reaction timer is notoriously unpredictable, and could last anywhere between 2 and 6 seconds. Seriously, don’t cook your grenades people!

This is the level that immediately made literally everyone clench up the moment this series was announced. It totally sucks on Agent and I can't imagine how much worse it is here, so good luck Dan.

Try taking the jacket off next time, it's worked before.

@bathala: Come on, man, did you come rushing here the moment the episode got published just to make sure your comment revealing its outcome would be at the top? I watch it for the conversations more than the gameplay necessarily, but still, that sucks.

I'm not gonna say it's the best RE (because I think that's a thorny question that hinges on what you're personally looking for in a Resident Evil game), but I genuinely love RE6.

I'd personally take it over 7, and this is coming from someone who's favorite game series is RE (preferably the original grouping before 4).

@rwoodall:

Agreed. The pin is nothing more than a safety device. I had a WWII era MK2 fragmentation (pineapple) and post WWII era M67 (EDIT) M33 grenade. Though nearly identical in function, the M67 had an additional safety clip. Thanks the internet. (/EDIT)

Both had their fillings removed. However the threaded fuse, now inert, as well as all other components remained and was very clear to see how the pin was merely a safety for keeping the lever on its detachable hinge.

The MK1 used in WW1 was quite unpredictable while being "cooked", as Asa Glick of The Simpsons would say if he were still with us.

"This one’s for you, Kaiser Bill. Special delivery from Uncle Sam and all the boys in D Company. Yeah, Johnny, Harris, Brooklyn Bob, and Reggie. Yeah, even Reggie. He ain’t so stuck up once you get to know him…" (boom town)

Don't blow up the 2 servers on the ground floor with the remote mines until after you've defended Natalya. They destroy the glass creating 6 angles to worry about instead of 4 (2 stairs, the 2 side glass windows). Just place them, defend her, throw the mine on the last server, and detonate all 3 at once.

Also as someone who is a big fan of Sunshine (2007) [the movie] i got immediately defensive literally every time they shit-talk Super Mario {Sunshine} so I'd like that taken into account.

Also I love and Cherish Mike Mahardy and always love when he is on video so; more please.

I DISLIKE THE HATE OF MARIO SUNSHINE! It is not a bad game, yes, it is not the best example of Mario games, but it is still WAY better than a lot of games that somehow make it out. I have never had a bad experience with it, never had trouble with the camera or weird glitches etc. Can we stop with the offhanded jabs at it.

You're exactly right. The pin prevents the lever from coming off accidentally. Pulling the pin out does nothing but allows the lever to detach, which it will do automatically when the pin is removed (unless depressed by your hand/object).

Once the lever has been detached the chemical reaction begins.

I really enjoy the discussion Mahardy brings to Giant Bomb East, but it's not good for this feature...

These later levels in Goldeneye require more attention and distraction discussion just kills the chance of forward progress.

While true, if Mike wasn't there, Vinny would be doing it even worse. In previous episodes, Dan will be in the middle of a really hard section requiring perfect execution, and Vinny will seem to forget what they're doing and put some deep, hypothetical, a-versus-b situations up for discussion. I think it's funny though, it's like the Giant Bomb version of Hot Ones. Also where Alex has to try and answer more and more obscure questions about movies while playing Mega Man.

There's something interesting happening here, and it reminds me of Dark Souls/Bloodborne bosses. Dan does GREAT his first time, and then hits a lull. I still haven't watched the entire video, so this isn't a spoiler, but it's almost exactly how I do against every Dark Souls/Bloodborne boss: get them down to well below half health and then...I guess we start overthinking it? Trying too hard to make lightning strike twice?

@kharngaroo: don't forget the two servers upstairs and the one in the room with two ceiling turrets. Best to do everything possible before letting Natalya in, then blowing the mines once the final one is placed on the room that opens up after she is done.

Whoa whoa whoa. As someone who first had In-n-Out in 2004 (when I was marching in the Rose Parade) and can't get it regularly, it is my favorite fast food burger. The fries I can live without, but the burgers are just so damn good.

I live in OK. I have Whataburger. I think In-n-Out is better than Whataburger.

I just want to chime in to say that I super disagree with Alex and Vinny describing the proto-survival stuff in Snake Eater as a chore. The hunting and wound care in that game was incredibly purposeful and deliberate; fully realized systems as opposed to the bog standard ways those sort of actions appear in games now.

I almost thought Dan was going to pull another Train and fluke this level the first run, but then he didn't get the turret room mainframe in advance, and he got terrible RNG on the Natalya defense with guards blowing both side-window entrances open really early. He's got this, he just needs to hold back on detonating the mines until after Natalya's done in the control room, and get more confident about the combat, and otherwise just be patient and focused.

I'll say that Dan's squeamishness about the combat is really holding him back. 00 Agent is really balanced around the assumption that you can confidently gun down guards, it's kinda what you sign up for when you go into 00 and I think it's a bit unfair to trash the game for it if you're out of practice. But if anything Dan has gotten less confident about entering firefights over time. If he'd just go upstairs and gun those two guards down on level 2 of the control room instead of depending on the mines to take them out, he wouldn't have to deal with guards coming through the gaps left by the explosions who ruined at least two of his runs single-handedly. He's even aware of this, but really insists that he's getting something out of not having to confront two idle guards, instead of creating two more openings for guards to pour in when the alarms are going and things are hard.

The combat in Train (probably my second favourite level after Control, so it was sad watching it just get totally trashed) also shouldn't have been nearly as much pain as it was, and I'm still really surprised that Statue wasn't a quick one-and-done run.

That all said, I'm probably acting like one of those people who complains about the crew being bad at puzzle solving during a quick look, so don't mind me. I think I just need to get it all out. Goldeneye was an amazing game, its campaign was years ahead of the rest of the industry in so many ways but there are all of these PC elitists out there intent on roasting it as "that game with the janky console deathmatch mode that console plebs liked".

It's good to see some kinder words being said about the actual game this episode. Goldeneye did so much for the FPS genre, but watching some of the previous episodes you'd think it was just unremarkable trash.

I cannot understand how dan after playing how ever many hours of this game still hasnt gotten to grips with the very simple auto aim system and insists on staying at range trying to no scope or use the absolute garbage aiming reticle. When your within a certain close range of an enemy the gun visibly snaps to them, all you need to do to get near them is strafe left or right to get close to them as once an enemy starts firing they wont change direction until they stop firing. Its incredibly easy to predict and setup for.
