Film & 40s: Film & 40s: Rocky IV

I'm so excited about this becoming a regular thing.

It's kind of fucked up how Rocky implies he might have to die for this fight. And leave his son fatherless. Because it's "what's he's gotta do". I mean I get it for the purpose of the movie, but it's kind of a weird undercurrent to the whole bravado of the thing.

Seeing this for the first time, after only having seen the original, I really liked it. It was so goofy and cheesy in the way I like.

I can't help but compare it to Ip Man 2, another goofy and over-the-top sequel.

Searching for my Blu-Ray copy right now.

Hopefully there'll be more of these kind of podcasts, but at the very least do one more for Jeff watching Cobra.

All these years I thought Drago said "You're dead" to Rocky in the last round, but apparently he said "to the end". That actually blew my mind a little. Would love to see Drago make an appearance in the Creed movie. It would be fitting seeing how he killed the guy's dad.

I've never watched Rocky. Jeff made me watch Tokyo Drift, so I guess we'll see what happens.

I have seen Pootie Tang so many times, and had Louis CK sign my DVD copy of it.

Nope. I really needed some more Jeff content at this point....[sigh] maybe next time.

I just woke up, remembered I wanted to see this, and watched Rocky IV with Drew and Dan while eating breakfast in my jam jams. Great way to start the day.

Great episode guys! The sync worked great and I liked having the audio cut in every once and awhile so I could pause and do other stuff and come back and re-sync at that point. Dan's reactions here were great, especially because he's just so god damn excited about Rocky even after watching it dozens of times.

@danryckert 80s are shit? You shut your mouth. Typing "80s" into Spotify or YouTube is one of my favourite ways to set up a quick playlist. Followed by "90s".

This was fantastic. I hope you guys do more! I would say if you have guests, it should only be 3 people at the most.

It would be kinda nice if they could put the audio in the background for people who are driving/not watching the movie just so there weren't long periods of silence.

Well, if there's one thing I can agree with @danryckert on, it's that's viewing Rocky IV is worth everyone's time.

As someone who:

1. Remembers this film as the first one he ever saw in the theater

2. Remembers this soundtrack as the first album he ever got

3. Bought and read the script for Rocky IV and saw that at one point it actually was a pretty respectable story and not 49% music montages

4. Was in the crowd for the Rocky Balboa fight in Vegas

5. Paid 100 bucks for a ticket to go to a charity event to see Stallone in person and watch Rocky Balboa a month before it came out, - with Diana Lewis' (the reporter from the first movie) daughter next to me...

....this is pretty relevant to my interests.

This was amazing. I decided to stay up til 4am got the sync real easy and felt like I was on the couch with Dan and Drew. Really hope they keep this up. Getting Jeff in for The Substitute or something would be awesome.

Damn I can't believe Drew only saw Rocky 1

I have to say that the whole Rocky's spirit versus Drago's doping has kind of lost its luster since the last time I saw this. Since then, Lance Armstrong and every track and field athlete and baseballeplayer under the sun has been caught cheating. There are no stories like this in sports. There are no good-guys.

By the way, the next movie should be Reign of Fire.

The greatest workout soundtrack ever invented. I used to run to the Rocky IV soundtrack and sometimes would keep going for weeks. One time i passed Forest Gump in Idaho and he asked me how i got so pumped. "Heart's on Fire".....i said....."Hearts on Fire, baby".

This was fantastic! Such a welcome departure from super serious commentaries and the riffing ones. Amazing how one's enthusiasm can really bring something to a "classic" movie.

OK I just want to say that the first Rocky 1 is a great film. Really a great film. Rocky 2,3,4 are all fine, but Rocky 1 is a masterpiece IMO. Rocky 4 is a bit of a joke.

This was a pretty great commentary. Great to have another reason to rewatch this movie.

Wait, what? We won the cold war? When did that happen? Seriously though I've always thought the "cold war" as being one that can't be won, especially when it was a "war" that was technically never fought. You may shake hands and nod your heads and agree that we aren't going to behave antagonistically toward one another but the threat never goes away. Last time I checked we're still pretty much armed to the teeth. We aren't the only ones, shocking I know.

I was hoping you'd someday do a MST3k/RiffTrax style 'video'. I feel like you're now obligated to do this the day you decide to watch Redline. That movie is too much of a goldmine of cool and crazy shit happening not to get your commentary on it.

The thing about 40s is that they're typically Malt Liquor, which has a higher ABV than beer.

I wonder if this movie has legitimately made Dan dislike Russians.
