I'm happy you decided to give this its own category. It helps let other games breathe and on top of that it helps people who haven't played this game to avoid spoilers for it as well!

No talk about Grace? Hope she comes up with brand new character, she's one the best part of this game.

Not sure how they managed to squeeze 58 minutes out of this novelty category, even having played and loved the game... So let's find out!

I appreciate this getting its own category. I had to wait until Christmas to play wolfenstein because I needed a new video card. Now I can leave this segment for later and not have to worry about getting spoiled. Thanks!

I guess I'll have to watch this to finally figure out what the hell are those moments they've been constantly praising recently, because based on everything I've seen and read about the game, none of the moments seem like that big of a deal and specially not enough to deserve it's own category and a 58-minute talk.

I think Titanfall 2 deserved this category of its own even more last year.

Just reading that list of nominations, Wolfenstein II really is just a sequence of crazy "holy shit" moments. Too bad the shooting part and level design feels so archaic in comparison, like something out of the early 2000's. MachineGames is a really small team though from my understanding so I cannot fault them too much.

I love the mere existence of this category. (Also very glad I managed to play through the game over the past couple weeks before the deliberations, I really dug Wolfenstein)

Also, surprised no one seemed to have realized the courtroom sequence was a dream before the mother pops up. I felt the moment that broken-down BJ breaks out of his metal cuffs and starts tearing into dudes screamed wish fulfillment fantasy.

Perfectly happy with being spoiled for this I started the game and wasn't enjoying the gameplay at all. I catch clips of the parts I didn't see based on what they discuss.

This was one of the craziest games I ever played and also the most frustrating. I wasn't a fan of the gameplay changes they made. It made the game a lot more frustrating and annoying than challenging. I also actually really enjoyed the Wyatt ending up until the horrible song

The introduction of Horton Boone was in my top 3. That character is great, and so well voiced by the Swede from Hell on Wheels :P

The Hitler sequence went slightly over the top for me ...

I really enjoyed this discussion as you might expect if you take a look at my 2017 Games of the Year List, but:

I felt like the meeting with Horton got short shrift. Even with as amazing as the three finalist moments are, Horton and BJ's discussion gave important context to different ideas of resistance. It's theoretically easy to band together when faced with an "ultimate evil" like Nazis, but I loved BJ asking where Horton was when the Nazis first appeared and Horton firing back asking where the fuck BJ was when the systems and attitudes that allowed the Nazis to flourish were taking root. THAT was Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus for me.

Brad's absolutely right, reading about Hitler in his later days and protracting that out decades the sequence doesn't seem to be over the top in the slightest outside of the fact he'd likely never would have lived that long.. but had he.. SURE..

Am I the only one who felt that Hitler was pretty clearly portrayed as not just being a frail old man but someone who is suffering from dementia?

I'm with Alex: The Hitler scene became too slapstick for it to be effective for me. It just had this tone of "lol Hitler lol," displaying the utter lack of nuance the game has at times. It felt very 1999 South Park. I know HItler was sick in his final years but him pissing, throwing up and passing out within the span of minutes is just too much. Also, say goodbye to MechaHitler in part 3 if this is the tone they will have for what should be a menacing, cunning villain.

Alex and Abby say they have seen that kind of portrayal of Hitler numerous times in the past, yet Abby could only name one and Alex could only name two (one of which was the same as Abby's, and how "mainstream" is Downfall outside of all the memes made from the one scene?). It makes me wonder if they really just "absorbed" the prevalence of all of those Hitler memes and how ridiculous those memes were and they are thinking they have seen Hitler portrayed that way so many times because they saw so many of those memes.

@theshrubber:

My wife brought up the scene where we meet Grace and Spesh as well, and it had completely slipped my mind. I think maybe because it's shown in the trailer it loses a little impact in the actual game?

I am also in the camp that thinks the Horton intro scene should have gotten more love.

I didn't expect that so many people apparently missed on the hints with the body and the monkey. I kept waiting for that shit to pay off the whole game, so that scene was nothing surprising.

And yeah, Horton Boone scene got robbed.

You're not wrong, but when (AFAIK) only three people there have played all of it, and we've already seen most of their opinions on camera, I don't think it'd be a very good GOTY discussion. It'd basically be another Beastcast/BITE.

I personally loved the Horton Boone scene, possibly even my favorite in the game, and it feels like they just shrugged it aside. I understand the three they picked as far as stuff that was impactful, but the category is "best", and I think the whole scene is just so full of amazing things happening at once it's ridiculous to ignore.

Also they didn't even bring up the birthday party scene at all, probably not in the top 3 but worth a mention.

Just wanted to say I'm thankful that this is separated so I can skip it. At the same time I think Yakuza 0 could've also had it's own category or moments.

Here's the thing about the courtroom:

The execution / beheading of BJ is a ridiculously over-the-top subversion of how you expect the guy to survive anything, but it's also a brilliant metaphor for how they reanimated and reinvigorated BJ as a character, taking what was once a simple sprite image of his head and grafting it onto the body of this story-driven behemoth of a modern update (with great shooting, btw).

Wyatt dropping acid and seeing the cartoon lizard, which then leads to nothing more would be my vote for the most disappointing sequence. Of course Wyatt going kinda crazy throughout the whole game is neat as a whole, but I really hoped for something spectacular to happen with that lizard.

This was fun to have as a seperate category. I agree with the winning three.

Hey, this just reminded me, they never address how Anya and crew escape from the garage when Super Spesh's plan fails. There's a scene where BJ explicitly asks Anya about it, but she kinda gives a non-answer. Made me wonder if there was something going on there.

This category was great and I'm good with the winning three, but damn I wish they even just touched on some of the Wyatt psychedelic stuff - not sure where those bits would be discussed in the deliberations otherwise. There wasn't really a single moment with Wyatt's arc, but I really enjoyed having the LSD stuff sprinkled throughout the game. Those druggy bits were great and add a lot to the whole vibe of the game. He does have a nice moment with BJ after trying to kill himself, gives a good speech at the end, and I love his interactions with Grace. Game was something else, man.

I realize that Alex and Abby are not that into the Hitler scene b/c it felt too "lol Hitler" over-the-top ridiculous. I think it HAD to be over-the-top to show you how serious it actually is. It's because everything has been so ridiculous that ridiculous IS "normal" in that game. Hitler is not exaggerated and made a fool just for the joke; he is also exaggerated to keep up and stay consistent with the tone of the game. Ridiculous in this game in a sense is actually serious/earnest, and the way that the game plays with this hyper reality by flipping between realistic and ridiculous is what allowed the story to break the tropes and expectations you guys addressed and kept us guessing. This is what makes the game feel so madcap but deadly at the same time.

I also think the whole scene surrounding Hitler is basically a giant metaphor for how absolute power corrupts absolutely, and how a man who has become a god-king is so far gone physically and mentally that he has gone beyond ruling the world to ruling his own pleasure palace on Venus. It's the irony of a man who has unlimited power but is also caged off at the same time. He has all this power and this is what he chooses to do with it. He has won the world but still needs to take a shit on the losers with a BJ propaganda film out of fear and paranoia.

As someone who did not like how Wolfenstein: The New Order played, the fact that this is its own category makes me very intrigued about the whole thing. Maybe hearing about these cool moments will convince me to actually play through them both. We'll see.

When the poor lizard died I was genuinely sad. i wonder how different the game was depending on who you chose to save? Wyatt's trips seemed so integral to the story for much of the game, and the 20 second sequence where he throws the tab in his mouth and then has his moment with the lizard is one of my favorite parts of the game.

Hearing Vinny talk about the ending confused me as well. The only people who spoke in my ending were Wyatt and Grace. After three minutes of horrible music BJ gives the ring to Anya, but he only says like ten words, and they're to her, not the audience. It kind of makes me want to play through again to see how different the game is depending on who you chose.

I looked up Reagan on wikipedia and couldn't find any mention of Arizona. This makes me wonder if it's really a reference to him. Would've been cool if it was, but this makes me think it might not be.
