99% of games are reviewed and scored at launch.

How come Street Fighter V is allowed a "pre-review" without a score? It has officially launched minus a bunch of promised features. Don't understand why it gets a free pass to improve over the next month while other games are held to a different standard at launch.

By the way, since they don't do Time Stamps: Skip to Fifty Six Minutes (56:00) in if you want to get past all the SF V discussion.

@dougfunk15: Read the editor's note, they're not holding back the review because of missing features but because they want to see how the servers and the netcode perform when the game is actually out. There's plenty of precedent for that on the site with games they're unsure of how will perform online.

@amyggen: Right, I did read that. Meanwhile that "netcode" excuse allows Capcom to release a completely unfinished game and charge $60 for it without facing any consequences for doing so.

@dougfunk15: I can't think off any specific examples of hand, but GB has definitely held off on scoring a game until the servers have been tested before.

Because if we had scored the game on Monday morning, the online part of the review would basically read "runs great, servers work, awesome dawg let's fight." It has nothing to do with features, it has everything to do with the way the game performs in a real, retail environment.

@ollieg_94: I get that netcode/connectivity is important for a game dependent on it such as this. However, it allows Capcom to put this game out at $60 minus a ton of promised features without proper criticism. Had this been a game that were less focused on online play, it would be criticized much more harshly for its paucity of content at launch.

But for me... this was Tuesday.

@dougfunk15: I don't think it did get a pass, though I also don't think they broke any promises, either. The only thing I can think of that's missing is the store (which as a DLC repository makes sense), and a cinematic story mode, which was said to be a late update from its announcement.

I think the game is disappointing, too, but without a working test of its online function, the review is almost meaningless.

Street Fighter V is damn lucky it has such a rich legacy to bank on. If a new fighting game or Mortal Kombat shipped in this state in terms of content it would get ripped to shreds.

personally i don't see why street fighter has to be "the one" or such a big deal. capcom always kinda half asses it (remember SFxTK?) especially when compared to the efforts from other fighting game developers

I hate to break it to you guys but the only ones who care about SF5s release are 40 year old men who miss the glory days of 1992. If it even makes next months NPDs it will be A miracle. Hail Mortal Kombat.

A lot of the complaints about Street Fighter V not doing anything to reach out to new/casual players sound like all the same exact complaints I had for Street Fighter IV (and was not looked on so favorably around these parts for expressing them).

@roomrunner: SFIV is damn fine but in all its iterations it's never been kind to newcomers, I feel. All fighting games can learn from the new Killer Instinct, i think.
