Vinny, real talk. That totally happened on Voyage of the Mimi. One involved them being shipwrecked needing to get water. The other was a man overboard scenario.

Also for old school PBS science shows: Eureka! (the ! is important, otherwise its the Sci-Fi show) and Newton's Apple, both had bomb ass intros.

I think you guys need to get Brad into some sort of program. I don't mind hearing about DOTA, but stories and descriptions he gives sound like a bad addiction. Like 4 guilds? That isn't normal and if it is, then all DOTA players are addicts.

Like none of us has ever been addicted to a game before. As long as it doesn't truly interfere with your life and you get out of it at some point, there's really no damage to it.

Addiction has such a negative tone, because it appears like it's forever. But it doesn't have to be. I've been seriously addicted to XCOM, to the point where I skipped (several) meals every day in order to play. Played around 15 hours each day, cancelled every social appointment I had and all that.

I got the game on release day and as of right now, I only have 210 hours on record.

Brad will probably stop playing Dota at some point. Didn't he already talked about how he didn't play for 10 hours straight anymore like he used to? He's fine.

I've got to disagree with Vinny, I don't think there are many people in their 20s whose first console was a 360, I'm 20 and my first was a PS1.

I think "preemptive multitasking" was the buzzword Brad was looking for.

That was the one I remember being thrown around when Win95 came out and had an actual threading model (although back then I remember an OS professor bitching that Windows threads were incorrectly implemented as entirely separate processes since they didn't share process memory like threads are supposed to).

The magnetized hand truck idea would do nothing to make the machine any easier to move. The magnets need to apply a force to the machine equal to its weight, and the magnets on the machine will apply an equal force onto the hand truck - the hand truck will be pushed into the ground just as hard as it would be by the weight of the machine, and consequently will be just as hard to move.

My experience with Monster Rancher is pretty much like Jeff's. Never got that far, but I remember scouring my house for as many CDs as I could find, including my dad's music collection. Then you would find one with the awesome dragon that you couldn't actually use or quite see because you weren't far enough in the game.

Doing something on the 3DS where you scan stuff with the camera would be pretty neat. I seem to recall someone trying something like that on the Vita, but it wasn't Monster Rancher, so meh.

As much as I agree, I believe that's what people call hipster-ism, which is supposed to be a big no-no. Since you're kindaof an internet celebrity, the fact that you feel compelled to seek out things nobody else has found, then try your best not to let the rest of the mainstream trending internetosphereical know about it, you clearly get some sort of sexual high out of it.

I just want to let you know we have a club for that sort of thing. Hit me up for the deets.

I'd buy Samsung or Intel SSDs, they get closer to their advertised read/write speeds than others, Corsair and OCZ reached nowhere near their advertised speeds when I benchmarked mine, not even half.

I also like Samsungs latest low voltage ram, it overclocks really nice and just seems way more stable than Corsair, I always have sticks of corsair ram fail :\

If you can get a cheap Ivybridge CPU, then get that instead of Haswell, the leaps Haswell have made are for laptops really, you'll never use the onboard graphics in haswell or need the lower power usage.

^ This - it's distinctly a Californian thing where they say The Whatever. I remember being slightly annoyed at the movie Chronicle (which was awesome) when the news reporter who was supposed to be in Seattle called I-5, "The Five".

Guess I'm in the minority here, but I'm 26 and my first console was a Texas Instruments computer that played a handful of games. NES, Genesis, 64, Dreamcast...yada yada after that.

Loving the long Bombcast.

I managed to get past the "Do you want to use your real name on Youtube?" thing. It did try to get me to use it a couple of times, and then it put up a questionnaire where it asked why I didn't want to use my name and stuff like that, I chose "privacy reasons", and the box went away and it still lets me use my nickname there.

What is the difference between a "Metroidvania" game and a Metroid-like game, what is the Castlevania part?

I could be wrong but I think the Castlevania part is the RPG aspect.

I was born in '93 so I actually played my dads flight sim and monster truck PC games with him and when I turned 5 I got a Nintendo 64 because I was way into Pokemon and Pokemon Snap was out and Pokemon stadium was coming out. Then I got a PS2 and gamecube (Not that great by the way) in like 2004 and in 2007 I got the 360 from one of my dads co workers and I've been playing that since.

So its really weird now to think that now I'm faced with whether I want to own a PS4 or Xbox One, and maybe have it for another 8 years. It's a brave, new, dumb world of video games we live and I'm ready to dive in one cell shaded polygon at a time.

Great podcast! Can't commend you guys enough for your professionalism over the past few weeks, it's strange I'm saying this after a podcast featuring "skydicks". Keep doing what you're doing, this is my most anticipated piece of entertainment every week.

The "meaty" comment about Joe Pesci's role in The Super had me crying in public.

I'm 23 and because I grew up in Eastern Europe (being pretty poor) my first gaming experiences were Lemmings and Prince of Persia on an old computer, as well as Tetris, Othello and maybe some other games on the original GameBoy (that I and my sister got from this Italian friend of our family).

However, even without extensive console history, mostly being a PC gamer since my youth, I appreciate the historic importance of older games. They can still be interesting and I'm glad when you go back to them. Those livestreams and Bombasticas when you play old stuff were both interesting, as well as an education.

Another interesting thing you touched upon was what technology is doing to our attention spans, ability to concentrate and so on. That's a huge topic that I find fascinating. I think the technology we created as humanity is an evolutionary extension of our own human evolution - we were always herd animals, and the ability to instantly connect with others is a further development of gathering into tribes, villages, cities, countries, and potentially further along getting even more unified (singularity, hive mind, or some other similar concept).

We created it, and it's further changing us, but since it's a gradual change, we don't really notice it all at once, only when we think back. I got a mobile phone pretty late, also spent the summers of my youth in a tiny rural village with my sister and grandma. Thinking back, it's weird how we lived before instant communication, you could be gone doing something stupid somewhere, and there was no expectation of reaching you easily. It's even weirder talking to people who remember days before wide access to the telephone (like my gran), and there are fewer of them around nowadays.

Also interesting was the concept Jeff mentioned, Eternal September, when the internet (or usenet originally) got a steady influx of users, dropping the bar for online culture. It's hard for me to talk about it, because I would count as one of the newbie latecomers, but it's probably an experience we can still attain in some smaller not very popular communities, like Hacker News or maybe reddit in its early days.

More old people/changing times talk! I find it extremely fascinating!

@vinny Packing a degree in physics here, and there are a lot of problems going on with the magnet situation. For starters, Maglev trains do their thang because it reduces/elminates the normal force between train and rail, which eliminates friction. If you were just pushing the pinball machine along the ground, a floor-machine magnet pairing would be nice for the same reason (@jeff knows his shit).

A cart-machine pairing would accomplish nothing, as you'd have the exact same amount of force pushing down on the cart, which would leave the normal force it exerts on the ground (and thus the frictional forces you need to overcome to get the cart rolling) unchanged.

What if the magnets on the floor were strong enough to counter the magnetic field of Earth? Wouldn't they then be able to float the cabinet beyond merely removing friction? Although I'm sure this might cause other minor problems...

Yo, I don't want to be that guy, but there's one surefire way to guarantee you'll have time to play through Earthbound...

Endurance. Run.

It's a turn-based RPG. It's long. It's funny. It's weird. Earthbound would be a fantastic ER game. I've been saying it for years.

Brad, i7 860s are around the same performance as an Ivy Bridge i3 (if you don't overclock), which is pretty good for most games, except stuff like Sim City or Civilization, a new GPU is a better option, unless you want a more eco-friendly and silent CPU (860s are around 150w, Ivy i3s 55w and i5/7s 75w).

I'm betting a Core i3 3220 or 3225 will be enough to play many Xbox One or PS4 games unless it's a bad port or heavily multithreaded.

Also, I can't stand Dota 2 anymore too.

Just for the record, both described things DO happen in The Voyage of the Mimi, they become shipwrecked, have to deal with hypothermia by sharing a sleeping bag, and then condense seawater with a makeshift plastic thing to get fresh water for drinking.
