Giant Bombcast 10/13/2015

Danny O'Dwyer joins us as we uncover the 10 Hottest Spots in Lisbon and discuss our adventures in amateur level design, disappearing Darth Vader, the FOB rebalance, the saga of Finicky Larry, mods for the console version of Fallout 4, that New Xbox One Experience preview, and hey, did you know that there's a new Assassin's Creed game coming out next week? Weird, right? Here's a cow.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

The blacklist is pretty fucking great. James Spader looks like he would kill a guy without blinking

@the_spaz_rises: it's hardly the last time. Pretty much all people have done is come down hard on it. It's tiring. Just let people enjoy things and don't preach to them about how they should be outraged (speaking generally here, not singling you or anyone out). The info's all there if they want, and if by and large they feel it's bad they can vote with their wallet.

Am I the only person who has had zero issues with the new Xbox dashboard?

It's lightening quick everything is easier to get to. Friends list and parties work much better. My only complaint was the pins and my games at the bottom, but once I found out that RT jumped to the bottom and LT jumped to the top it was fine

Late to the party just listened to the podcast tonight, and yeah I think a lot of Jeff's issues with the new Xbox 1 dash could of been alleviated if he knew about the LT and RT button functions. That said there is still random freezing and full hard crashing to the front menu for me on a lot of things. I'm having serious doubts they are going to be able to roll this thing out in November for the general public.

One of the gaming truisms that was echoed in this episode is that Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood were great, but Revelations sucked. Why exactly? I played through all three, and thought Revelations was fine - maybe not *as* good as the previous two, but it wasn't terrible or broken. More of the same, for sure, and the tower defense minigame was kind of lame (but not required after the first time). Am I missing something?

I'm not saying this to dump on games writers, but opinions tend to lose their nuances over time. No one seems to remember that Assassin's Creed III (for as much as I agree is not a good game) reviewed pretty well, even here on Giant Bomb where it was awarded "Most Disappointing Game". It probably doesn't help that Revelations was, from the onset, perceived as a "filler" game.

Ryan really loved AC III (everyone has those mediocre games that for some reason they really get into), the rest really didn't like it.

About the last question on how to shoot VR, I think something similar to what this YouTube channel is doing is a good way to make the viewer understand what the player is doing in real life and on the virtual world. They've done most of the demos mentioned on previous Bombcasts and it's way easier to understand what is it by watching these videos.

I don't know how to turn this into something easier for a Quick Look, but maybe someone can brainstorm something out of this.

Here's an example:

@ripelivejam: Well thats the rub isn't it? People complain but give into the very things that offend them. Its always been after the fact that people roar in outrage by then the voting with their wallets are done. Very few people actually really looked at the game when it was a demo rather willing to lay their trust in the brand to deliver regardless of the obvious signs. Hell there has been plenty of warnings and people are still falling for it till this day. Hence the outrage... when has any of t ever been about logic?

Finally got around to finishing and hearing Jeff mention Bonk was so weird as I was just thinking about my NES just moments before and what games I have for it.

Also, I would have never guessed Jeff likes Blacklist as much as he seems to do. If it wasn't for Spader, some of the show would be unbearable

The Blacklist turns into a shitshow just past season 2. I don't remember it having that many deaths early on, mind.

My first Tony Hawk game was THPS2. I wasn't too young for THPS1; I just never happened to cross paths with it. I loved and played the shit out of THPS2. (And when all this THPS5 nonsense was going around, I hooked up my old N64 and played some THPS2 and it's still pretty good.) However, my favorite Tony Hawk game is THUG. The story and its progression was awesome, and the skating felt good. Yeah, it had some dumb gimmicks like driving cars, but that was not the focus. I'll be honest - I never liked the classic THPS style of having 2 minutes to do a checklist. Frankly, I hate that method. The style introduced in THPS4 where you free skate and go up to objectives to start them is vastly superior, IMO. That is a big reason why I like THUG. Also, getting off the skateboard is not dumb, it's a great feature. There were so many times in the old games where I would spend so long slowing down and turning on the spot to line up a sequence I wanted or something. Getting off the board allows you to do that simply and quickly.

Anyways, I know no one cares about my Tony Hawk opinions, but I just wanted to chime in as someone who was not too young for the classic TH games but still likes THUG the best. I should add that I thought THUG 2 was stupid with its Jackass-ery and ruined the name of Underground, and I was glad I only rented it. (Side note - never have liked Jackass, so that is not a contributing factor to my like of THUG.) I also never had the chance to play a TH game after THUG 2, so I can't compare Project 8 or anything.

"Mooning the Wookiee" made me laugh, but it's not true. There had been very decent Star Wars stories after that novel. It's just that that particular novel was the first in like a 20-something book series called the Yuuzhan Vong war and that whole series was really off-the-wall for Star Wars and not too great.

Schlitterbahn could actually be german ... well, it is german I just don't know if that was the intend :) ... "Schlittern" is sort of an intentional slipping and a "Bahn" is just a track.

I have to agree with Jeff on the James Spader vs Keifer Sutherland. I've seen The Blacklist and he is awesome. His acting is so different than other actors that it just draws you to him. Keifer is great as well.
