Giant Bombcast 468: It's Always Sunny Above the Clouds

I almost fell asleep listening to Jeff's game preservation diatribe. Blah, blah, blah about a super niche subject that few people care about.

Awesome, MAGFest namedrop from Jeff. I love MAG (been going for 6 years), it's big enough to have cool stuff but not mega-huge like PAX. I know it's probably below their threshold but it would be awesome for some of the GB folks to make it to a MAGFest one year.

GameCube controller was great. WaveBird is one of the best ever.

@sodapop7: I absolutely agree. Most comfortable ergonomics, unique buttons making it easy to know which you are pressing, C-stick great for quick flicks, button layout let's you hit a and any other button at the same time without accidentally hitting another butto, and of course the best shoulder buttons ever.

Plus what's with the love for the PS4 controller? Worse spacing than previous dualshocks, impossible to hit option button, finicky touch pad, L/R 2 buttons that trigger just from putting the controller down.

How so many can be so wrong about cobtrollers is baffling.

Can you dudes remix the vocoder 'Giant Bomb' (like the original) back into the intro track please! Miss 'em.

@humanity: I am right there with you. My eyes kind of glazed over this week in a bad way. I enjoy the stuff, but I'm feeling a little worn out with the amount of it lately.

Pivoting slightly to this quasi-debate about Infinite Warfare...I really didn't take away from that discussion anything other than interest/support for CoD is lower than it has been. This has been the case since that first "controversial" trailer, no? Maybe I missed where they said it sold like shit, so apologies if I did, but I definitely felt like they were merely intimating that it isn't what it used to be (which was the whole reason the conversation came up).

@sethmode: Yah I hear yah. It's even worse when you're out running and any conversation that you're not directly interested in seems to drag on twice as long.

As for Infinite Warfare that has always been a mystery to me. Fans of that series turned on that game in an ugly way, and I agree with Jeff that it has one of the best campaigns to date. I honestly wasn't able to get the multiplayer to work for me - I did get the game through the Win10 store which is a "don't ask" sort of situation. Not sure if the game was technically broken or what but I wasn't able to ever connect to a single match.

Either way it's always important to remember that an O-K selling Call of Duty game is still outselling other games by a 2 to 1 margin. It's a shame about Infinite Warfare because I sure as hell don't ever want to go back to anything before modern times and if this is their excuse to revisit WWII then oh man would that be a "suck-ass" move considering how exciting IW was with all this super cool future tech. The way you stand on the bridge while the navigator literally throws a switch and then rides some space waves to warp your carrier to another location was really awesome.

I also found this weeks bombcast hard to listen to. Been listening since a few months after the launch of the site. I guess every podcast has its ups and downs.. Gotta give them some leahway. They can't always interest everyone all the time.

@humanity: I agree with you on that. When they brought it up again I couldn't help but feel like hitting the fast forward button. I can't help but feel like this is only the beginning though and there's going to be more of it in the future.

@jesus_phish: I assume all this talk is because of the lull in new releases. By the end of February there should be more stuff to talk about, hopefully.

Hope to be seeing more of the framemeister, guys. The mylifeingaming channel was really cool to hear about from last week's podcast.

The talk of the old video game magazines reminded me of one I used to read called either Joystick or Joystik, it was 70's/80's. Also Compute and RUN magazines.

I enjoyed hearing about Drew's pilot license journey. It's insight into Drew's world and personality. I skipped through this podcast too. The Beastcast has become the Giantbomb premier podcast , entertaining and unskippable!

@skabb: Definitely. The controller is very comfortable but the build quality is garbage. Broke two controllers R2 triggers just playing Rocket League and holding the button down for extended periods.

Same here. I'd muchrather hear about game preservation and scan doublers than other topics that get quite a bit of time on a regular basis, like fighting games or Metal Gear, for example.

I'd re-up my subscription for a premium retro podcast.

Playstation 1,2, and 3 controllers were baby controllers for people with baby hands. They were absolutely awful. So small and nothing significant about them.

This feels like an all time low for Bombcast comments. Are all you duders really watching it live or commenting on the video version or something?

@ripelivejam: Yeah, that ain't me. I can really only budget so much of my time to watching Giant Bomb videos, and I'd rather use that time for Quick Looks and various premium content, and leave the Bombcast as an audio-only thing I can listen to when I have a spare moment throughout the week.

Same. Even when it's old games I care about, I have almost no interest in talking about retro game hardware. That's a rich man's hobby (relatively speaking), and I would guess that 99% of the listeners to this podcast are probably plebs like myself who barely have the disposable income to buy all the new games we want to play, let alone have a few hundred bucks on the side to go around buying retro game hardware and CRTs and converters and old arcade cabinets and the like.

If I were to play old games, I would play them illegally on an emulator using downloaded ROMs I didn't pay for. Sorry, DMCA, but that's just the way it is. I know the emulation isn't always perfect and whatever PC gamepad there is at hand may not match the feel of the original controllers or whatever, but I just don't care. The convenience of emulators far outweighs the very small amount that I care about it "feeling" like the authentic, original experience.

Came for Drew memes. Left disappointed.

@lonelyspacepanda: I like COD, though I haven't played one in since 2008 . I don't get the hate, it sells, it's fun, who gives a shit? Not my cup of tea, because I mainly play SP games. And no I don't require 1000 hours of horseshit either. Also, I hate Skyrim. I think it's the most over-hyped game ever. And I loved Oblivion and Morrowind. And I got it free, cause a friend of mine INSISTED I play it. Maybe that's why I find it so "meh".

Go figure.

@danryckert: If you have normal hands, the GC controller is cool. But playing Prime activated my early onset arthritis something fierce. It's too cramped, but so damn snappy.

That's also the reason why I love/hate the GBA SP. I have 6 of the damn things, beat all the Castlevanias, but the Fusion Motherbrain battle still escapes my meaty grasp. Due to dpad rub. I only have callouses because of fighters and playing the SP.

I'm with Drew, I don't take my shoes off when I get home after work and don't have separate work and home outfits.

I totally agree, it's one of my favorite feeling controllers.
