Giant Bombcast 508: Xfinity Heavy Industries

Loot boxes keep rearing their randomized heads all through this podcast, but we also manage to chat at length about our GOTY cram lists, Battle Chef Brigade, the perilous fate of the Trap Trebek, baby shampoo taste tests, and definitely not what the best Metal Gear Solid is.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

Having to catch up means likely no one will see this comment but, fishing minigames are 9 times out of 10 my favorite thing to do in a game. It's usually what I spend most of my time doing and I want it to be in more games.

Achievements aren't better than trophies: they're the same. Trophies are better because I can get psn credit for them now :p

Loot boxes aren't gambling. This is a stupid argument. Sure, they tap into the same brain response...maybe...but with gambling I can't engage in the game without gambling. I can still play Overwatch, Call of Duty, Battlefront II, etc without paying real money for a loot box. Hell, I GET a loot box just for playing naturally...that doesn't ever happen in actual gambling.

I didn't really think that I'd hear complaints about Horizon's combat or the design of the enemies being difficult to ascertain what they are (?) but I guess that's a good indicator that its not getting game of the year. Well, its going to be Super Mario Odyssey for sure now lol. I found the combat in Horizon to be thoroughly rewarding, even early on. I'm going to get pretty bummed if the games that get the most time/praise are one where people are like, "OK, the game stuff sucks but the story is great" as I feel those games should get their due in categories like "Best story" and not "Game of the Year".

BJ becoming "The Doom Slayer" would be stupid, without a doubt. I think even the lore put about in Doom makes that, or should make that, impossible.

But if a game has a fantastic story that lets you look past flaws in the gameplay that's clearly a good sign of it being a game of the year.

If the good parts of a game (story) can be experienced on YouTube without me ever touching the game it might not be a good game in my opinion.
