Whitta’s book Abomination is well worth a look. Solid historical fantasy/horror with some cool ideas behind it.

Regarding the talk at ~45mins about eSports players and "aging out", and how fighting games don't have this as much: TW Fighter Major, a big tournament in Thailand was held this weekend, and the winner, Sako, is 39 years old, has a wife and young child, and didn't drop a single game. Literally, during the 9 sets/21 games it took him to win the entire tournament, he didn't lose a single game. That includes 5 games against Tokido, undoubtedly one of the best SF players in the world right now.

And with the "how good is Daigo still" discussion, he is 37 years old and still as of this year, winning and placing highly in major tournaments. Fighting games really do subvert the whole stereotype of eSports careers ending before you hit 25, there are just as many top fighting game players in their late-20s and 30s as there are young new upstarts.

Not related to anything said on the bombcast, just wanted to share that the starbucks doubleshot tagline 'point done' is going to be you doubled over on the toilet at work like you have four appendix bursts happening at once. This has been your sponsor break fine print comment.

Related to the bombcast, I still play fighting games at 30, it may be laughable but in the Absolver fighting community I'm not quite tops, but somewhere on the higher tiering. I can't speak to age specifically but I do find that there are times where I find myself not quite on tilt but disengaged with what I know how to do and or reaction speed is not always quite dependable.

I think there's something to aging out of certain dependability to nail your timing or out-pace your opponent in fighting games. I also think the mind game aspect of things is something people who are aware of sometimes slower reaction speed definitely can play on as a buffer. It could just be me, but I definitely notice a difference in my ability to sit down and fully engage my senses in fighters or otherwise no longer in my 20's, which sometimes takes some real tryharding to get back to what I feel is my personal bests. For those who are older and still in the larger FGC competetive scene, winning tournaments etc, kudos to them because, no it's not ageism it's biology, getting older does affect motor skill memory and reaction speed. The trick I think is acknowledging that as a player and adapting to a new strategy that is more dependable than a young man's game approach. This has definitely helped in a more momentum and realistically paced fighter like Absolver for me anyway. The end!

I love all kinds, but when I make them:

I like some fried onions (white or red), bacon (thick or thin cut double smoked), ketchup (a couple dabs of your preferred hot sauce) & some honey dijon on a cheddar smokie w/ these Villaggio sausage buns (or the Toscana varient).

I'm not really picky, I like spice as well, but not so much heat it overwhelms the flavour and blows out your pallet. A bit of a bite, and then a slow creep on the back end is where it's at.

As a European I take offense to the idea that the best American craft beer is worse than the worst German conference beer.

Yes, we have good beer, but don't get it twisted: we have real shitty beer too :-)

I am personally excited for Battlefield V. I think part of what has gotten BFV preorders down is the social media mess of people over a guy attacking some fans and then basically leaving the company. I don't think its a massive part but I do think it is there. Who knows honestly. So many people who vocalize how they, "FOR SURE AREN'T GETTING THIS!" actually do and just wanted to complain about it. Reminds me of all those people "boycotting" Modern Warfare 2 over no dedicated servers and literally every person in those "boycott" Steam groups were playing the game on day 1. I think EA and the stink around them has done it poorly. Also, maybe people are just pre-ordering games less? Either way, I'm getting, don't care. That said, I think COD:BLOPS4 is kind of awful but I also loved BLOPS3.

Not sure how none of them didn't include Halo in the "evolution of FPS". I feel like Halo did more for the genre, especially as far as console shooters go, than any other shooter ever including Goldeneye.

The timesplitters buy-out news reminded me about how we don't get good split-screen shooters anymore. That mode is a pretty economical way to get a bunch of people together and enjoy fragging. Even more disappointed that major PC shooters don't leverage the power of the hardware to enable it (Black ops 3 was the last one i recall having that feature)

My opinion on Dead Cells has significantly soured because of the last boss. The difficulty is a huge order of magnitude above the rest of the game and playing through an hour+ (for an average player) run of the castle just to get another sub-minute attempt at the boss begins to wear thin.

After almost 30 hours in the game, getting through the castle was almost trivial for me and yet I wasn't even close to beating him and I was starting to get sick of the game. I ended up save scumming to be able to just retry him over and over. I did eventually beat him, but there's no way I would have stuck with the game without the ability to do that.

I'd be interested to see if Brad and the rest of the GB staff's opinions on the game will change as they repeatedly bang their heads against that boss.
