Introducing Demon’s Souls - Borne to Run S01E01

Enjoying this a lot, though I'm curious what the cadence is since they need to get through all of the games and it seemed like this was a weekly thing from the intro.

This will motivate me to get back to this one. I bought this at the PS5 launch but I haven't touched it much since in favor of other games.

@thisisdell: Scholar is the Dark Souls 2 for people like Tamoor that "study the blade" for the rest of us its frustrating.

@shtinky: Honestly, this video felt more like old Giant Bomb than Nextlander. Nextlander feels like Giant Bomb during the beginning of the pandemic.

only suggestion for this video would be, when danny asked "What does this flower item do?" .. instead of looking it up, the response should've been "Check the item description".

@dizzyhippos: I guess, but I’d argue it’s supposed to be frustrating. Ds2-sotfs was the 2nd souls borne I played. The beginning was kinda frustrating. But the rest was a bit of a cake walk. The easiest to become over powered for sure.

Danny's said that there'll be three episodes per month, and then the fourth week will be taken up by an episode of a different show he's making where he interviews a member of staff (or friend of the site) about a game they love but think didn't get its due, in more of a NoClip style documentary format than the usual GB videos.

For some terrible reason Danny encouraged comments so here are mine:

- what the bloody hell are you lads on about (I never in my life imagined I'd hear so much british isles english on a giant bomb show)

- editing is for the weak, 2020s audience. give us old men the uncut tuna we crave

- I'm an addict so I would really prefer it if the show were 20-30 minutes a pop but drip fed over an entire week tbh

- do Americans actually understand your accents when you really get into it? I find it hard to believe. they're going to start asking for you to turn on a second set of subtitles

- if we work out the math you'll be playing these games for... ten years? quite the hustle Danny

@thisisdell: I mean thats a totally fair argument, personally I started SoTFS and bounced off it so hard I went and bought 2 on sale and while it is a step down from DS1 its fine. Just a difference in philosophy about what kind of experience we want from those games I guess. (I should probably also point out I played threw DS1 completely ignoring the Parry mechanic for 99.9% of that games fights and never got good at it... (you know which one is the 00.1%)).

This was great! Nicely edited, good length, great banter and chemistry with Tamoor. Really looking forward to the next episode 👏

@dizzyhippos:Dude I never used parry. Like ever. To the point that when Sekrio came out and forced the new parry system I was completely awful at it. The only From Soft game I haven‘t beaten, YET!

@brainscratch: How can you say Tamoor and Danny are like old Giant Bomb in comparison to NextLander, which literally comprises of Vinny, Brad and Alex? And we're still in the pandemic era; both Danny and Tamoor are recording their feed remotely from home; it's really no different to what NL are producing. I just have more faith in NL than GB at this point. Sadly, GB is not independent and feels like it will be closed down someday. Easy Allies, and now NextLander, have proven that it is possible to do a completely independent and Patreon funded Giant Bomb-like company, that's supported by the community and not beholden to corporate overlords.

You're contradicting yourself a little bit there. First they're completely different but then they're doing the same thing? Which one is it then?

Anyway, what I said was that this specific video feels like old school Giant Bomb to me. The type of content and the banter remind me of the Endurance Run era and just because it is edited and has new people, it doesn't mean that it can't feel like Giant Bomb. I think Danny and Tamoor nailed it here and this video fits perfectly next to the other content on this website.

Personally, I feel like slightly "shorter"(1 hour or less) and more focused content with a good balance between comedy and information feels more like "old" Giant Bomb to me than long, tedious, and aimless daily streams like GB was doing last year when the pandemic started. There's nothing wrong with liking longer streams, but I'm glad GB moved away from it.

I also don't get where this idea of "beholden to corporate overlords" comes from when it seems like GB always had a ton of freedom to do whatever they want and, from what they've said multiple times in the past months, it also seems like their new owners are interested in investing in GB and care much more about them than previous owners. I never really got a sense that GB was doing something because a higher-up forced them to do it.

@brainscratch: I'm not contradicting anything. Someone said "i dont even recognize these people", and I replied, 'it's a different era of Giant Bomb', in reference to the new hosts, and if he wants the vibe/hosts of old he should check out NextLander.

I get what you mean that this specific video felt like an Endurance Run video, but how can you not give NextLander the benefit of the doubt that they too will soon produce shorter content? They are literally only a month old and haven't even got round to producing that type of content yet, so making a broad statement that all of NextLander is like early pandemic GB and will forever stay that way, is just daft.

And to me, the golden era of GB was during the 2010-13 Whiskey Media days, and the content I most associate with that era were the 1-4 hour UPF/TNT/Kerbal Space style streams - with Vinny doing wacky things in the control booth. Vinny still does that control booth stuff, and the current lot of NextLander streams also range from 1-4 hours. So, to me, even in its early state, it is evoking those vibes of old.

As for the corporate overlords, the fact that Abby, Ben, Vinny, Brad and Alex all left within a short period of time was very suspicious, and testament to there not being a certain level of freedom or room for growth in the company.

Love Danny and Tamoor, but like a lot of people have mentioned could go *much* lighter on the editing. This is GB, if a video isn't 4+hrs I am disappoint.

I mean, that's not suspicious, that's openly known and spoken about by the nextlander guys. If you work at a IGN, Gamespot or Giantbomb, you either stay at the same role for a long time because you love it, or you leave after a year or two because there's no career development. Quite natural to make the call to leave as the company is about to enter a new phase.

To be frank, seeing edited stuff again is a breath of fresh air, and gives a reason for a place like giantbomb to exist in 2021 when places like twitch exist (there's plenty of streamers there fumbling through games for hours on end if that is absolutely all someone's sensibilities will allow).

I wasn't going to comment, but feedback matters I guess right? There is nothing less giant bomb to me than edited content like this, those 12 attempts you said I won't have to suffer through were I exactly what I wanted to suffer through. Amazing job love you guys I'm going to keep watching no matter what, but I like those long videos!

@mikachops: Gaslighting, much? I'm not angry about anything; I was literally just replying to someone who said the vibe/hosts were different, so I told him about NextLander. Maybe take your own advice, but apply it to Internet comments.

@onemanarmyy: I know, but that's contrary to what brainscratch was saying; since he thinks Giant Bomb do have a lot of freedom. But based on Abby's comments about feeling stuck in the same position and going nowhere, and Brad, Vinny and Alex all leaving on the same day - which, we still don't know the full reasons of, but an estimated guess could be due to wage cuts or something similar to Abby - I don't think they do have much freedom. Being given a large sum of money, from your overlords, to go wild with isn't quite the same thing as having full creative and managerial freedom as a truly independent company.

Really enjoyed this first episode. NGL it has really tempted me into converting to a Premium membership...

@shtinky: Merely pointing out that you’ve been rumouring about certain people leaving and why the good old days are over (they’re not). Was just pointing out, you could try just enjoying the content and skip all the mental energy around that stuff.

I’ll also add, accusing someone of gaslighting on the internet is the new Godwin’s law, so maybe don’t do that if you want to be taken seriously.

Great first episode, guys. Love how distrustful Danny is of everything Tamoor says, even though he himself already played this game and does know some stuff.

Not sure how I feel about the production just yet. Some of the cuts are so minor (probably 5-10 seconds of walking) that I don't know if they are even worth it. I can definitely understand cutting longer walks, future grinding or just doing highlight (death) reels for prolonged boss fights, though. The zoom ins etc. are also pretty cool.

Also, why are we talking about the state/future of GB in every damn thread (be it a video or anything else)? Can we just start focussing on the content again, please?

@mikachops: Regardless, you kind of just butted in and made a bunch of incorrect assumptions; you were wrong to assume I was angry, and still don't understand the full context and root of the discussion. I wasn't just rumour-milling out of the blue; we were having a discussion which lead to how it's possible to do a Giant Bomb-like company, idependently via Patreon, without fear of corporate overlords.

I love the influx of European/especially English/Irish slang in my daily life thanks to the many pro-wrestling/videogame videos I've watched in lockdown. I understand so many of these phrases I would've been scratching my head at, even WITH context.

@shtinky: Any rumouring is generally looked down on here, thus my comment (and genuine want for everyone) to "just enjoy the content" instead of engaging in meta commentary about the site and its hosts (which is tiresome and reflects poorly on this community).

Call me old fashioned but I don’t want edited versions of videos ever. I like Danny and Tamoor and it’s great that they’re here now but I’m asking myself what’s coming. A show about rumors where one guy reads questions and tells us what he thinks may happen in the industry (I really don’t get the concept at all sorry, Jeff is also a great edition but this show is just absolutely nothing for me, it’s the news with just one guy instead of the crew? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

There are almost no more quick looks and the Bombcast seems to be Jeff G. talking most of the time and not liking stuff. I really don’t know man, it’s weird for me. I’m happy if this works and others like it but I think I might be done. And that would also be fine I guess they can live without me but it’s kind of a bummer right now.

Ps - Just because it was mentioned: Nextlander. I love Vinny, and he’s still great but they’re also doing exactly what they already did and it’s fine I guess but it’s also nothing really outstanding so that’s not the reason I’m being kind of an ahole here right now just to be clear :D
