The intro is fantastic, but for some reason the first couple chords of the song make me think that He Who Laughs Last... by AFI will start playing and I'm a little disappointed it doesn't.

They should play that Disney skating game that used the Pro Skater 4 engine during this. That game was pretty damn good.

Love these games, and it's amazing to see you guys playing them all over again. I think Jeff would've enjoyed the competition-stages a lot more if he took a better advantage of grind combos, just like the pro strat learnt from the later games in the series.. I know you can't manual and string longer combos together in this first game, but you can still get a lot of points by grinding rails and building up the combo with gap-bonuses, kickflips etc. Looking forward to Jeff Gerstmann's Pro Skater 2 and beyond =)

They should bounce around to different games in different series and not just skate straight through the Tony Hawk series.

I used to rent this and Pro Skater 2 from Blockbuster all the time for my N64. I remember specifically in Pro Skater 2, I would turn off all the songs except Powerman 5000's "When Worlds Collide" and skate around to that song over and over again because I liked it so much.

I didn't really get into punk until high school (these games came out when I was in middle school) and I didn't realize that I had already heard Dead Kennedys via this game until "Police Truck" started up in this video! :O

Love this series concept and can't wait to see 2! Maybe you guys could do one big video playing through some of the 'other' games in the series, like the GBA THPS 2, the PS1 version of THPS3 & 4, and that Xbox launch title Tony Hawk 2X as one compilation video or something? It obviously wouldn't be as thorough as doing the main series individually, but I feel like it'd be a good way to just take 20-30 minutes to check those games out since they're all based on the main games you'll be playing anyhow in this series.

@cats_n_tats: at the time I was way into real aggressive inline skating and it was a surprisingly good representation of the sport. Seeing all the dumb inline trick names appear on screen like Fishbrain or Sweatstance was a real treat.

I was really excited about this feature but I have to say I was hugely disappointed with it.

Here is what I didn't like, hopefully it comes across as constructive criticism as that is my intention as a premium member for years.

1) Brad was basically checked out for most of this stream, maybe doing the feature with people who are jazzed about Tony Hawk would be the best way to go. I feel like Rorie, Jan or Alex (cross coast) would be way more into THPS, the associated culture and music. Watching people half asleep is not fun and never will be.

2) Please take the laptop off Ben, for every slightly funny thing there is a deluge of bad tweets, long periods of silence where he is just reading it rudely and generally causing him to be disengaged with what the audience sees.

3) I didn't like when this essentially turned into Breaking Jeff. Just have fun with it, you don't need to get every gold medal for example, that's not what we are here for. Brad is the guy we love for that. I was hoping you would talk more about the game and the context of it releasing etc, but it just ended up you getting avoidably frustrated.

I reckon making this a pre-recorded feature with Alex/Rorie/Jan/a guest would give this much more life and actually celebrate the THPS series.

Hopefully it improves but if the next episode is like this I will have to check out. Not every feature needs to be UPF-lite.

well said. as it stands the intro is the best part of this series. laptop ben and sleeping brad never fail to frustrate. i'd rather jeff just play the games solo rather than have them in the room with him tbh.

I like the idea of this series, but didn't Jeff play the GBA Tony Hawk game for, like, 2 hours on one of his "old games" streams a few months ago? I have vivid memories of a stream he did that was super boring because he basically just got so wrapped up in playing THPS for hours that he wasn't even talking or anything.

I really don’t like how Ben spends 90% of the video just staring down at his laptop... I understand checking the chat occasionally or looking up a cheat code but he’s hardly even paying attention to what Jeff is doing. May as well not even be there.

You're never too old. You probably just have to do "old man skating" (as my doctor calls it) -- basically lower impact stuff so you don't blow out your knees/ankles. Or build a mini-ramp.

Trick variety was definitely killing Jeff in the points department, he spent a lot of opportunities doing Benihanas that decreased in score.

It was mentioned in the chat, but if you do a fastplant/nollie with every trick, it gives you a free multiplier to boost your score. Combine fastplants/nollies with doing at least some sort of rotation with every trick makes the score tapes and competitions very easy.

Otherwise, this game is exactly how I remembered it and how shitty Downhill Jam was.

I didn't see what you're referring to but it's almost certainly THUG Pro you're talking about. It's a mod for THUG2 that contains the majority of the series's levels. Sadly there's none of the objectives or anything, but that'd be hell-of hard to implement so it's understandable.

Anyway I loved this video and I disagree with the complaints. Freeform GB West is my favorite style of GB West content.
