Kerbal: Project B.E.A.S.T

Kerbal: Project B.E.A.S.T: Part 04

Getting to the moon is the easy part. Getting back to Kerbin... that's the trick.

No, this actually _is_ rocket science, thank you very much.

They might find Precise Node to be a helpful mod since they're always so low on delta-v it should help make their transfers as efficient as possible.

I believe its East you want to head. Whichever direction the planet is rotating in as it contributes to your lateral speed. That much less fuel you need to spend.

I once used my Kerbal's EVA thrusters to literally push my craft into Kerbal atmosphere. Keep it in mind, Vinny.

Five minutes in and they've replaced the parachute with a drogue chute and attached the reaction wheel to the heat shield.

If only they could retroactively hear me scream at the screen. This is painful and extremely funny in exactly the right way.

Many Kerbals died to bring us that series.

TWR is thrust to weight ratio. it tells you how much trust you have compared to the gravitational force. 1 or less means you ain't leaving the launch pad.

Good effort guys, I thought you might have had it. Make sure you are burning from the right point (you started your retrograde mono burn from the Periapsis, should do from the Apoapsis- vice versa for breaking away from Kerbin. Burn prograde from the Periapsis point, that is where your speed is highest)

I'm loving this series and the team's creativity : )

Two bits of advice...

There were some points where Alex and Austin seemed to want to point the ship to Kerbal to return home. While is TECHNICALLY POSSIBLE there are easier ways...

Notice when going to the Mun, the opposite side is the one that grows. During the "RCS boost" section the opposite side shrank. Why not try that same maneuver from the farther side?

-----------------------------------------------------------

Other bit, is after achieving Kerbin orbit and before the 'Mun Maneuver' - When you mark something as a target you can see an ASCENDING NODE and DESCENDING NODE -> these are the best points to make purple maneuvers to make your orbit and the target's line up on the same 'plane' and if done closer to planet costs less fuel

^- This will be a BIG help with trying to rescue the stranded kerbals

It looks like the Mun, much like the Moon, is Tidally locked(also called gravitational locking or captured rotation). This occurs when the gravitational gradient makes one hemisphere of a revolving astronomical body constantly face the partner body.

You shouldn't need Flight Engineer to get to Mun and back. It's not even really helpful for it.

I love how they only care about having enough fuel to get the ship touching kerban, and no regard for what happens when they don't have enough to slow down before impact lol

36:40 is the moment that doomed Bill #2 to float the void forever. That fuel right there would've made the difference.

Does anyone know if Kerbal has decent tutorials? I'm thinking of buying it but the game looks so complicated to just start where these guys are now. And I don't think simple trial and error would be very rewarding because there are so many possible combinations.

@foolishchaos: As long as they hit the atmosphere the air resistance will slow them down enough. They can then use the parachutes near the ground for a gentle landing.

I'm glad I know nothing about Kerbal because I'd probably be one of those people screaming at the video when they get stuff wrong. I'm completely clueless, though, so it's all fun. However, it's been pretty clear to me for awhile that with how they do things and how they built their rocket, they're not ever going to have enough fuel for a round trip. They need to either streamline their flight plans or come up with a completely new ship design, I think.

I had a feeling that Vinny not saving the last build of their rocket at the end of Part 3 would bite them in the ass, and sure enough, it did. I'm even more anal about saving than Austin has been.

I'm pretty damn hyped for the next video, though. I've been waiting for a rescue mission since the first guy got trapped in orbit.

@dovah: I think they're pretty good. There is also a science mode that limits your parts and has a progression of unlocks to help guide your construction some. That and this game has a metric ton of tutorial videos and articles online. I think you'll be fine if the game interests you.

Some "quality of life" suggestions:

-- You encounter the most air resistance in the lower atmosphere, so you don't need a high TWR for your first stage or two. 1.5-1.7 is enough.

-- You get the most bang for your buck in terms of fuel when you decrease your orbit at the apoapsis (slowest part of the orbit) and increase your orbit at the periapsis (fastest part of the orbit).

-- Helpful key bindings for the rocket construction phase:

X/Shift+X to increase/decrease the symmetry settings

C to toggle angle snap

F to toggle symmetry to the vessel or the parent part

R to toggle between radial and mirror symmetry

After listening to the GOTY podcasts I would really like to see Brad in on one of these. I would imagine the technology exists where Brad could somehow transmit his voice to the East coast and view the same screen as Vinny, Alex, and Austin?
