You can always tell when Dan is holding back tears because he is constantly lifting his eyebrows. Also how is this Dan's favorite series when he gets so many things wrong about the series?Every episode he's says something that leaves me scratching my head.Hell, you can look all of this stuff up for crying out loud. There's no excuse with the internet at your fingertips.

I think Drew summed it up perfectly during Big Boss's exposition:

Love the 20 minutes postmortem, reminding us what fun but utter nonsense the whole series is :)

I love this wonderful God awful piece of shit masterpiece terrible series.

I like how the comments on the video alternative between 'this series is shit' and 'I love this series'. Like, I feel both of those things at once? Maybe that's OK.

That hallway sequence is easily in my top 3 videogame moments of all time.

I played this when it first came out over 2 days after my friend loaned me his PS3 for the weekend and getting to that part, I stood up, jamming on the triangle button and just screamed "Get up!! GET UP, YOU OLD FUCK!!!"

This game's melodrama is GREAT at bringing out moments like that.

So... This is actually much more of an arbitrary mess than I even thought it was. Great series guys, I really like Metal Gear now. And 5 sounds great, now I can play it.

Regardless about how people may feel about the story, it's hard, almost impossible to think of another series that really actually manages to fucking STAND OUT, as something other than generic forgettable boring crap.

Who's gonna remember Shadow of Mordor's plot 10 years from now, how about the riveting tale of Destiny and all those memorable characters and plot points?

It may be overly convoluted, even downright stupid at times, but holy fuck is Metal Gear entertaining and memorable as all hell.

Loved this shot.

Incredibly enlightening series, I'm extremely happy this was done. I was in the same exact boat as Drew, I'd known some stuff through osmosis, but hadn't ever played any of the games myself.

I'm now 25 hours into MGS5 which has been a perfect starting point because it plays fantastic, and I don't really care about this story too much. I thought I would, but man it's so convoluted it's hard to care. It was making sense too, until the post credits scene. It should have been over with suicide, I'm with Jeff.

This series so far has been so entertaining to me. I have binge watched this series more than I have binge watched any TV show. It was no less exciting watching Drew play than if I had played it myself. It allowed me to binge without feeling overloaded on Metal Gear. Everything about this series was great and I am glad I gave it a shot! Thanks for all your work guys, I'm now very deep into the rabbit hole with Metal Gear lore and am having a hell of a time with Metal Gear Solid 5!

You guys rock! I can't wait to watch the rest of the series, especially since I'll be caught up with you guys.

Finished this game this week for the first time and somehow avoided all spoilers until now. That said, I found this game to be quite enjoyable and right up there with MGS 2 in total package.

I really like how Ocelot seems to come back to himself at the last minute, right after all he did to fool and subsequently rid himself of the Patriots' control. I don't find it that weird that Drew and Dan commented on it, because it took me beating the game several times and watching this series again from an on-lookers perspective to even realize that that's what was happening there at the end of the fight.

Anyway, for as much bad exposition and info-dumps, unnecessary explanations to things that muddle the story, all told awkwardly with translated dialogue, and the excessive crudeness of some of the easter-eggs in these games, it really does all come together in the end.

The characters in these games are the best part of it, but the convoluted nature of their plotlines (well, excluding 3, which grounded it way more, and had a more self contained, better told narrative that is still important in the grand scheme of things) have really grown on me after re-watching the series, due to not really giving -that- much thought to what was actually going on with all of the game's plot when originally playing them.

Metal Gear really is a special series, for the good, bad and the weird aspects of their... everything.

edit: spoilers about very end + post credits below.

I really, to this day, think the game should've ended when Snake put the gun in his mouth, because it, like the end of 3, says everything that needs to be said to close out that story-line, bringing big boss back and killing Zero, while important, is not necessary to be shown in my opinion.

@xchairmandrekx:

I don't think you are being fair at all. If you actually spend the time thinking of games with decent stories (and not throwing in the most generic ones you can think of like Shadow of Mordor) it isn't that hard to think of memorable experiences. Like maybe... Red Dead Redemption. That game has continued to stand out to me over the years. If I really wanted to, I could make a good list of games with stories that stand out from the rest, but that is besides the point. I just don't think Metal Gear is that exemplary (in areas that matter).

After watching Metal Gear Scanlon up to this point, I can't say there was very much that was memorable to me. Even though much of it was watching cutscenes, they went on so long I almost always lost interest.

Boy, was that ever a ride. Looking forward to when I actually get around to playing MGS 5, but not before watching the Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes videos too.

Also, I just want to say, that as someone who actually likes Mr. & Mrs. Smith, that scene with Johnny and Meryl was just too much and didn't work well at all.

Anyway, thanks to Dan, Jason, and most of all, Drew, for sharing some of the best times I've had on this site.

Even though they played through the games they understand so little of them. And it's really frustrating because Drew just chalks up everything to "it's Metal Gear, of course it doesn't make sense." Throughout these videos, I had the genuine feeling he doesn't like doing any of this. He was in "Negative Nancy snark machine" mode almost all the time.

As someone who has watched all Metal Gear Scanlon up to this point, but has never played any of the games. If I had to rate them, I would say MGS3 was my favorite. It had the best story and the most intersting bosses. But it is from the point of view of someone who's only experience with MGS (before 5) is through Metal Gear Scanlon.

Thanks to Nal for this amazing writeup, I didn't like the scene with EVA, her death, and Ocelot doing the finger guns until I understood the martyr thing. Other than that, just want to thank @danryckert and Drew for this amazing series. I've heard about Metal Gear and how important it was (especially to the PS2 which I never owned), but couldn't get into it.

Then MGS 1 happened here and I loved that, it's still my favorite because it's so different and the bosses are so great. By far MGS4 is the worst, but that's just because I hated the beasts and felt the first 2 acts were throwaways.

All in all, what fun this was!

@nals86 said:

A lot of people are very unsure about Ocelot's story. The post credits scene makes perfect sense when you put it side by side with Big Mama's story and the events of MGS2. I will break it down in a timeline for folks.

Ocelot was born Ademska on the beaches of Normandy. His mother is The Joy and his father is The Sorrow. The Joy will later be known as "The Boss."

The Philosopher's kidnaps The Joy's son in order to enslave her to work for them. All the while Ademska is raised in the US. He never learns of his mother's past.

Ademska, under the watch of the Philosophers, joins the NSA. He becomes a code-breaker for the NSA under the code-name ADAM. There is no record of exactly what happens but at some point him and another man named EVE who he worked with fled the US to Russia.

ADAM and EVE get back into contact with the CIA through unknown means and becomes spies for the CIA. They are employed by the CIA to work for the KGB as double agents pretending to be defectors.

The Boss is sent on a mission to kill The Sorrow by the Russian Philosopher's who threatened to kill ADAM (her son) if she did not do so.

The KGB employs ADAM and EVE to infiltrate a group of Anti-Government Russians called the GRU. The GRU work under Colonal Volgin who was the son of the Russian General who stole the Philosopher's Legacy after the events of WW2. The Russian Philosophers who controlled the KGB wanted the Legacy back and needed ADAM and EVE to bring it to them.

The Russian Philosopher's had no idea that ADAM and EVE were still working for the CIA. The CIA (owned by the American Philosopher's) also wanted the Legacy for themselves. They were triple crossing.

Tatiana. Who was a Chinese spy working for the Chinese Philosopher's under the guise of being Sokolov's mistress, found out that EVE was working for the KGB to grab the Legacy so she killed him. She assumed the role of "EVA" to meet with Big Boss to help him help her recover the legacy for China.

ADAM goes to meet with Big Boss as he was told to do by the CIA to help snake get the Legacy for the US but once finding that EVE had died, kept his cover as a GRU Operative and doesn't reveal his motives to Big Boss. ADAM (now renamed Ocelot), only pushes Big Boss along the right path but does not do much to help him as to not blow his cover.

Ocelot ends up worshiping Big Boss as the mission goes on. Forming an allegiance at the end with Big Boss during Volgin's fist fight with Big Boss. Ocelot tosses Big Boss ammo and cheers for him, creating an odd rivalry.

Big Boss defeats Volgin and Ocelot gives him the Legacy. Though Big Boss is unaware that Ocelot is in fact on his side, Ocelot is aware that EVA is not who she says she is and does not trust her. Ocelot instead gives Big Boss a FAKE Legacy and keeps the real one to himself.

EVA betrays Big Boss and steals the FAKE Legacy from him to give to the Chinese.

The CIA receives the Real Legacy from Ocelot and they award Big Boss for killing The Boss and for restoring balance in the cold war. Ocelot stands outside the window and salutes Big Boss as he shakes hands with the President.

Big Boss leaves the CIA.

Ocelot only gives half of the Legacy to the CIA because he has grown tired of being in the control of the separated Philosopher's his entire life. He keeps half the Legacy for himself and begins a plot to overthrow the CIA.

Ocelot speaks with Major Zero (whose life was threatened by the CIA to complete Snake Eater) and the two of them plans to hunt down all the Philosopher's of the world to be free of their control.

Ocelot and Major Zero plans to use Big Boss to help them in their plan without him knowing. The orchestrate Big Boss to get captured.

Big Boss gets captured by his old team FOX (A branch of the CIA). Big Boss forms the group FOXHOUND, whose mission is to hunt down the members of FOX. Frank Jeager (Gray Fox), Zero, Para-Medic, Sigint, EVA (Who left the Chinese Government) and Ocelot. This is Zero's and Ocelot's plan from the start.

The Leader of FOX who is the head of the CIA, gives in to Big Boss and surrender's to him his FOX army and the land that FOX operates in. It turns out that he was the last of the Philosopher's who Zero and Ocelot were always after. Ocelot kills the leader of the CIA and gains control of the rest of the Philosopher's Legacy (after all he personally owned half of it for himself the whole time in secret).

Major Zero and Ocelot use the entire Legacy funds, along with Big Boss' new FOX army to create a new group of philosophers. But they called this group the Patriots, the Patriots controlled every aspect of the American Government through their army and their funds. They form under the vision of The Boss who was controlled and used by her government as a pawn.

Big Boss travels the world to recruit soldiers. He becomes an icon for the Patriots. But Big Boss goes into a Coma and Major Zero is worried about losing his new Messiah and then clones him using Para-Medic's knowledge and EVA as a surrogate.

Big Boss wakes from his coma, finds out what had happened and leaves the Patriots. Starting the rift between him and Zero. Ocelot remains on the side of the Patriots.

Big Boss creates an Army to fight against the Zero's Patriots who are now called Cypher. The events that follow are unknown.

Big Boss returns to America and reforms FOXHOUND. He does so in secret as he is building outer heaven behind the American Government's back. Cypher find out about Outer Heaven and Metal Gear and assign Solid Snake to stop Outer Heaven. Big Boss double crosses Snake and Snake defeats Big Boss.

Big Boss then goes into hiding and creates Zanzibarland. Solid Snake is sent in once again to stop him. He finally succeeds and defeats both Gray Fox and Big Boss. Cypher (Now renamed back to The Patriots) captures Big Boss.

Zero puts Big Boss into a forced Coma using nano-machines.

When Big Boss was put under a nano-coma by The Patriots - Ocelot decides to leave the Patriots along with EVA (Big Mama) in order to bring Big Boss back. EVA was cast out but Ocelot remained with Zero and the Patriots under cover so he can still earn their good graces and intel. After all he has been a spy all his life.

Ocelot joined the FOXHOUND unit created for the Army (The old foxhound was created by the CIA) because this was a unit that was close to Big Boss.

George Sears (Solidus) who worked for the Patriots along with Ocelot made Ocelot go along with Liquid's plans for revolution. AS A COVER, Ocelot's orders from the patriots was to make sure that Liquid's plans never went through and that he recovers the plans for Metal Gear Rex for the Patriots. BUT IN REALITY, Ocelot was really there to interrogate a founding member of the Patriots (Sigint) in order to find the where-abouts of the Patriots AI, Big Boss' body and the location of Zero. To keep his cover, Ocelot killed Sigint.

Shadow Moses was a failure for the Patriots. They didn't get the Metal Gear Plans as they wanted and they took their anger out on Solidus (the president at the time). Solidus was hunted by the patriots to tie up loose ends but Solidus employs the help of Ocelot to escape. In turn Solidus helps fund the attachment of Liquid Snake's arm onto Ocelot as they are in hiding.

Ocelot sells the plans of Metal Gear REX to the black market. This is how metal gears start popping up all over the world and why Snake and Otacon creates their anti-gear team "Philanthropy" to hunt and destroy these metal gears.

During this time Ocelot and EVA now know the true depths of the Patriots AI.

AS A COVER, Ocelot working for the patriots was sent to steal Metal Gear Ray from the Army. This is because the Patriots wanted to recreate the Shadow Moses incident and they wanted to make Solidus the big bad who would eventually lead to the creation of a new super soldier (Raiden).

By chance, when Ocelot was stealing Ray, Snake was there too working for Philanthropy. This set off something inside of Ocelot, causing him to become possessed by the spirit of Liquid Snake.Ocelot's father was The Sorrow, who was a medium who could empathise with the deceased. Ocelot had inherited both the charm of The Joy and the Spirit Channeling of The Sorrow. By taking Liquid's arm, Ocelot had created a link between himself and the dead Liquid. This is why Ocelot fought with liquid's spirit while snake watched. It is also why Liquid sounded like he did.

After the events of Big Shell. Ocelot amputates liquid's arm to hopefully stop Liquid's mind control. He replaces the arm with a robotic prosthetic.

EVA, through trading information with Raiden, finds out the location of Big Boss' body and goes on a rescue mission. She recovers him and reconstructs his body using parts of Solidus and Liquid's corpses.

Naomi, who has since fled the Government meets with EVA (Big Mama) and Ocelot and they devise a plan to end The Patriots once and for all. The three of them vow to sacrifice their lives for the good of the world and the end of the Patriots. Each person undergoing a task that will end their lives.

Ocelot realises that there was an advantage of being posessed by liquid years ago. The Liquid persona is the best way to fool the AI Patriots. The Patriots currently have the ultimate weapon in Solid Snake and the best way to deal with this weapon is to exploit it's weakness. Solid's weakness has always been Liquid. The arm of Liquid was gone now so they needed another way.

With help of Big Mama, Ocelot underwent extensive training, drug treatment, hypnotherapy and nano-machine implants to become a doppleganger of Liquid. In doing so would manipulate the Patriots greatest weapon to their undoing.

Liquid has always been against the Patriots and was starting to mess with Ocelot's undercover plans. Ocelot started to split his personality, the real Ocelot and the anarchist Liquid. This Liquid was no longer the real Spirit of Liquid that showed up during the Tanker mission. This new Liquid was the one fabricated by Ocelot, which is why he does not have liquid's real voice.

This process essentially killed off the Ocelot we know. The treatment worked well, too well, and the Ocelot we know became lost to the liquid persona. There was no double agent Ocelot anymore, there was only Liquid left. The plan went out of hand, but in a twisted way it worked as they predicted.

With Ocelot out of the way. Liquid could continue the plans he set forth at the very beginning which is to re-create Outer Heaven. He had no need for the Patriots or for EVA anymore. Ocelot was done and Liquid left to run a PMC which ended up leading him to become the CEO of a company that owned the biggest PMCs in the world.

Using Ocelot's knowledge. Liquid was able to launch an attack directly on the Patriots in order to free him and his soldiers from the binds of slavery. Big Boss' original vision of Outer Heaven. Ocelot had known this from the start which is why he turned himself into Liquid.

Big Mama housed the body of Solidus in the Pyx to fool the Patriots that she had the remains of Big Boss. This would lead Snake to her so she could better educate him on the control of the Patriots and also give time for the real Big Boss to find and capture Zero.

Big Mama was a decoy and knew the Patriots would kill her through Solid Snake because of the violence that followed him. She also knew that Liquid was after her, a further way to prove to the Patriots that Solidus was in fact Big Boss. She knew that their plan involved Ocelot (her Ally) eventually hunting and killing her by design of becoming Liquid. She takes this fate and she dies by jumping into the fire that burned Solidus' remains. She did that as a symbol that she would sell the decoy to the end with her life so the Patriots will know without a doubt that the burnt corpse was indeed Big Boss. She was the first Martyr.

Naomi helped Liquid in order to help Ocelot's plan come into being. This is why her motives seemed so obscure to Snake and Otacon because they were under the control of The Patriots without them knowing. Naomi had to help both the motives of Ocelot and Solid Snake because Snake was the key to killing the Patriots and Otacon was the key to killing the JD AI. She did not predict that Sunny and not Otacon would be the one to help her.

Unlike Big Boss. Liquid's intentions from Shadow Moses was always a form of world domination. It was his ego that differed from his father and this is no different for the doppleganger Liquid Ocelot. Liquid didn't want to just kill the Patriots AI. He wanted to control the world differently to how Zero did, through anarchy and power instead of a war economy and nuclear deterrence.

This is why Naomi turned on Liquid to help Snake and Otacon. Liquid wanted to only turn ownership of the Patriot AI from Zero onto himself using GW. The AI will still own the world. She enlisted the help of Sunny and destroyed the Patriot AI without sending the world into complete darkness.

Naomi knew that once their plan had been completed, that the nano-machines inside her body will stop and she would die of the cancer in her body. She opts to end things her way since the AI Virus was already finished and she had no need to live on. She killed herself on her terms with Snake and Otacon. The second Martyr

In the end when the Patriot AI was destroyed completely. Liquid found solace in it regardless because he still had a vast army and still earned the freedom and anarchy that he so longed for. The only difference was that he did not have the total domination he wanted. He saw the loss of the AI in an optimistic light, he was after all, liquid snake's mentality.

Just like Liquid Snake would have done, his need to fight with his brother took over Liquid Ocelot's ego. They fought on top of GW to his death. As Liquid was in his dying breaths we FINALLY see the return of Ocelot who has been out of the game since his treatment years ago. Ocelot, who has been trapped in the control of Liquid is finally free and gives a salute to snake as a form of "Thank you." He had successfully used The Patriots weapons against itself and used Snake to kill the last of the Patriots. He then dies. The third Martyr.

I think this series might be my favourite Giant Bomb thing ever.

Unlike all the other ones I've only ever played this MGS once and that was right when it came out.

I remember not really liking it at all, it was confusing, the boss fights were lame, the installs were annoying (and that stupid "Oh we're on Bluray!" remark just pissed me off, I'll take 10 seconds of disc swapping over 10 minutes of installing thanks) but watching this back has really improved my take on it.

I'd probably still rank it as my least favourite out of 1, 2, 3 and 4 but it's definitely not the complete train wreck my memory made me think it was.

Well, I never realised that the music played during the second credits is a cover of Here's to you, Nicola And Bart - the song that features heavily in Ground Zeroes.

yo kojima horny but besides that. This franchise fucking astronomically triumphs any piece of fiction ive consumed. The scale is so fucking big that anytime anyone mentions metal gear, they are immediately laughed at and that just speaks volumes to its influence and reach. so impenetrable but if you do manage to surrender yourself to this... you are probably forever a metal gear believer. I'm glad i exist as a human in a period where I can experience this dumb shit.

Wow this was 5 years ago!? Feels like last month.
