@drewbert Even though Metal Gear typically deals with fictional states, Abkhazia is in fact a real place! It's an autonomous region in Georgia (the country) that was contested by Georgia and Russia during the 2008 Russo-Georgian war. Russia recognizes it as an independent state, but basically everyone else in the world considers it occupied by Russia.

Oh wow, I totally didn't notice that they were all up! Thank you SOOO much for doing that, the wait between episodes of previous series has been agonising. :D

I feel like Dan completely undersold the parry mechanic and now frustration ensues because Drew doesn't realize its the one constant thing in this game that's used all the time :D

I think that's the first time I ever heard someone say they "wish[ed] you could call Rose"...

Fun fact. Herr Doktor pervs out big time if you call him during the Mistral fight. He's real interested in her cybernetic enhancements.

@ind1gnation: I think he told Drew to play on Easy precisely because how often it comes up and how much trouble Drew would likely have adapting to it.

While I agree with Dan that you can finish the game without caring about the parries, it makes the game much better when you understand the system but it doesn't really matter since they're playing on easy. it's not as frustrating as the whole MGS V run.

It wouldn't be Metal Gear Scanlon without Dan finding a way to sabotage Drew's fun by telling him to ignore the parry mechanic, even though it's kinda what the whole game is about?

Surprised @danryckert didn't pick up on the Dracula reference. Phil LaMarr does the voice of Kevin, he also did Vamp in the Solid series.

Watching Drew miss the prompt to chop Blade Wolf was devastating.

Yeah, I was surprised he didn't know that. Drew seems like the kinda guy who would go on a fun backpacking trip through Transnistria, Nagorno-Karabakh, South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

So Drew still doesn't know how to do the Zandatsu and Dan provides zero help, only obfuscation. Yep it's GB alright.

Seriously though I wonder if even Easy mode is enough help to do this game if you can't parry.

The old "Dan tells Drew to ignore a main gameplay mechanic of a Metal Gear game so he never uses it for the whole play through"-bit. Classic.

@drewbert Wheat beer or witbier typically contains coriander seeds otherwise known as cilantro, might explain the weird flavour.

It'll be fine through most of the game, but boss fights I think will be a problem.

Yeah, Drew mentions towards the end of this episode that he doesn't feel like he's just ignoring mechanics which is his fear of playing games on easy. IMO he's ignoring two of the most unique mechanics (parrying and precision cuts in Zandatsu) which is kind of a bummer.

When I played this way back when I played on hard, and while I probably wouldn't recommend that to anyone (it was pretty frustrating) it looks like easy is too far the other way.

@nukleon: In Dan's defense, the guy who reviewed this for game informer couldn't parry and didn't know that he could by the dodge move, so his opinion of the game was probably colored by that.

I have to share the frustration about the trouble Drew's having with understanding and using the parry. I'm also both frustrated and entertained by the way that Drew is clearly not used to action games like this which is shown by the way he does things like use any stairs nearby instead of running and jumping over and under everything.

Raiden has been mostly robot for a number of years now, I feel like he is probably past being sad because somebody reminds him he lost an eye.

I am really glad that the first thing Drew did was stumble upon Ninja Cat.

I love these videos and I keep being astounded how they have absolutely no idea how any of the systems work and even basic instructions like "use scan mode to find out who has an arm you need to cut off" seem to completely elude them amidst the chatter.

I'm equally intrigued to see both the fun commentary and if by the end of the game they will have come to grasp at least some of the basics. I swear that if I didn't know any better I would honestly assume neither Dan nor Drew have played a videogame before in their lives - seems like apart from Jeff, the gaming performance while on camera takes an incredible nosedive for most of the crew, which I guess is part of the charm in a way.

I'm pretty sure we say something like "come at me". "come on" sounds like broken English, which is why you always hear it as a phrase in translated Japanese games.

His surprise when he figures out it's good is fantastic.

"Come on" does sound weird to me as an exclamation of success. For me, it can be a taunt (think of Arnold's "Come on! Do it now!" in Predator), an expression of encouragement (as in "Come on and slam, and welcome to the jam..."), or frustration (see GOB Bluth). However, I don't think most Americans would use it after a victory. If we're shouting it, we're probably frustrated ("Come on, I totally dodged that!") or impatient ("Come on, hurry up!") If I'm triumphant and ready to take on all comers, that's more of a "bring it!" or, like HotJala said, "come at me!"

I love how everyone in Rising is such a great character. It's such a fun game even if you take out the awesome gameplay.
