I miss Insane Warrior.

I think Karate Champ was the second arcade game I ever saw (actually it was Vs. Karate Champ, but pretty much the same thing aside from better voice samples), a grocery store here had one. Karate Champ is still fucking awesome and fun as hell to play.

As a stupid little kid I'd run around saying "STOP. JUDGE." for no reason because of that game.

Guilty Gear does indeed call them "rounds," but whenever a new round begins it says "LET'S ROCK" and whenever you win in Accent Core it says "SLASH."

They should give this hamster series an award. That way they can actually call it award winning.

Little known fact: The driver in City Connection is a female protagonist named Clarice. It was changed to a dude in the American version of the game. Where is the uproar?! Kotaku?! Anita?!! :v

I wish any of these could be nearly as upsetting as Game Room was :(

Once again, pretty mystified as to what makes an acceptable ancient ass game. City Connection looked boring as fuck and Nova looked at least decent.

A big reason why these games still have attention brought towards them is due to the feeling of mastery after multiple rounds of failure. These games are very hard. Beginning to understand them and progress is one thing, but to claim mastery over these complex games is another. People argue it is a very :"pure" form of what video games are.

The only way to know if these appeal to you is to try them out. It is true that the pacing of older games are very different from the games made in the past 20 years, but I don't think either style invalidates the other. High scores from this era has been replaced, but there is still probably value of the player setting their own ambitions toward end play rather than the game guiding when the experience should end.

Sorry, no bonus.

Also, it's weird that Dan was disappointed to find that bottle rockets were illegal in California. They're illegal in Minnesota, too. Maybe he just didn't know and lit em off anyway (of course he did).

ALSO also: Moon Cresta looks like it was the inspiration for that vertical shooter that was included in the Game Boy Camera software.

In Guilty Gear they call the rounds "duels" ("Heaven or hell! Duel 1! Let's rock!"), and in BlazBlue it's "rebels" ("The wheel of fate is turning! Rebel 1! Action!"). Arc-system-works games are wierd...

Man, the hits in that Karate Champ game are pretty fucking brutal. The way the characters just lay on the ground with their mouths agape makes me a bit uncomfortable. Like, those dudes are actually hurting.

My favorite quick look duo at one point was Jeff+Ryan. Then it was Jeff+Vinny. Currently, it might be Jeff+Dan. I'm sensing a pattern here. I really enjoy the virtual company of one Jeff G-man.

I'm thinking Eternal Champions may have been one of, if not the, first games with mid match fatalities.

If you haven't, I recommend checking out the sequel, Terra Cresta, which rips off Xevious pretty blatantly, but cranks up the awesome.

Dan is 1000% right about Pain and Gain. It is a legitimately good movie, made by Michael Bay. I never thought I would be able to say that, but it's true.
