Quick Look: Borderlands

Looks good but does anyone else think that having only one action skill per character really sucks?I know they can be embellished by some passive skills but there doesn't seem to be much to differentiate between the classes.

This game looks like it would be great to play with some friends online. Does it have local multiplayer as well?

Looks like the PC crowd is really stoked. I can see why since it seems to be waayyy cheaper than the 360/PS3 version.  I wish the console game prices would drop.  We're in a Recession, dammit.

Just checked Amazon's best seller list, Borderlands has moved UP in the pre-order purchases.  Looks like it's gonna get good sales regardless of what anyone here thinks.

You certainly do talk a lot of shit. I checked out your Achievements & I see that you have played Alone in the Dark as well as Kengo: Legends of the Nine. In fact, you have played a TON of shitty games!!  Also, I see that you have played a FEW AAA games & from the look of it you BARELY played any of them. Do you rent games only?  I mean Christ, look at Fallout 3...that was GOTY and you scored a D on it?!?!  Or was it Not-Applicable? I say you need to stop whining & go play some games for a change as your claim about being "the expert of fine game playing" doesn't match the reality of your Achievement list.   Judging from your Achievement List, if Borderlands is a shitty game, then it's right up your alley!

Advocating for a game by nit-picking a gamer's habits (as tracked by 360 achievements, no less!) is pretty idiotic non-sense. However, since you asked -- no, I haven't played many of those games that you're talking about. They show up because the discs were at one time put into the console to verify that they worked after being purchased (note the lack of any points). And since that leads to your other question, no I don't rent games and never have. I only buy games. And I buy a lot of them (because though I have little time for gaming and sometimes go for months without playing -- at least on a console -- I like to collect them as well as hardware).And you're right - I haven't finished Fallout 3 yet. As my entire collection of games and consoles (and a lot of other stuff) was stolen in a home invasion awhile back and I've been slowly replacing the entire collection from scratch over the past year. While I would have liked to replace Fallout 3 right away, I decided to put it off until the GOTY edition came out so I could get all the DLC included in the price (and hurrah! it just arrived by UPS last night!).  Anyway, you clearly see by my two messages that I would love for Borderlands to be amazing, but have very deep doubts based on seeing this actual gameplay and what I have been hearing about it most recently. The fact that I have watched a number of trailers and interviews here and elsewhere over the past year and still didn't have a clear idea of what the fuck the actual gameplay or genre was speaks volumes about the game, if you ask me. People usually want their potential audience to know what their product is about and like. I'd like nothing more than to find out in another week that all the people whose opinions I put stock in were having the time of their life with this game and be motivated myself to then pick it up -- but I have high doubts about that happening. It's got heavy, heavy mixed reactions.  Pretty much the same kind of reaction that happened with Too Human last year.  I wonder if the trend for this game will be the same for Borderlands. That would be too bad as the hype was pretty good.  Too Human had some massive hype behind it too. I still remember the kids on Gamespot using Too Human graphic sigs on the message boards...at least up until the game was released & then they disappeared...haha. "

Been stoked for this game since day one, and to finally see it get played in a larger chunk then a couple minutes is nice.  Confirms that I am going to love this game.  Just need the 26th to roll around to cruise with my homies and get some epic phat loots!

This game looks like the perfect blend of action and RPG that I really wanted Too Human to be. I've been cautiously watching this game, but this Quick Look has made this game a guaranteed buy for me. Next to Brutal Legend, this will probably be the sleeper hit of the year.

Whats really promising about this quick look is the fact that they were all playing it together and apparently having a good time doing it. Dueling for a gun?!?!?!?! Thats a way to solve differences

I want to like Borderlands and everything I've seen so far is good but gotta admit, what I saw here, seemed pretty boring.

People that think gameplay is boring..
I thought the same about games like Diablo and World of warcraft.. but once you play it..

If you've read many of my posts over the month's you'd be well aware of my unfortunate situation. Not only did they take all of my consoles, games, and accessories, but one of my three $3,000 Apple Cinema Displays, GPS, digital camera, medication, eye glasses, wallet, identification, java badge for the office, the keys and lojack fob for my mustang, and a bunch of other stuff. I caught them in the process of stealing one of my many laptops tha has a damaged screen and is used as a headless VPN server or else they'd have probably escaped with a whole lot more.  All totaled they got around $25,000 in their haul. Fortunately, I have renter's insurance so the stuff I have receipts for should be covered (eventually) though that doesn't help with certain titles that are difficult to find now. *sigh* -- I actually was so frustrated with the violation that I was about to give up gaming on consoles at all because it was going to be such a challenge to start over from scratch.
 
Anyway, I agree with the heavy mixed reactions about this game and your comparison to Too Human. When I was replying to your original message, I was actually thinking the strong opposite reactions from people reminded me of Haze -- and that is what I had in my head when I was describing how I felt what I was seeing was something I'd find i the bargain bin next to Wii Bass Fishing. Your more succint comparison to Too Human is better, though, because that is a game where everyone had high expectations and in the end at least half of people truly despise it and half absolutely love it. I have not played it, but my reaction to Too Human pre-release was pretty similar to my reaction to Borderlands, here. I, like many, had a very strong " I don't get it - it looks okay, but a little generic and uninspired and uninteresting" feeling. The exuberant expectations leading up to launch of some people truly astounded me and I felt there was something they were getting from all of the information that I was not.
 
I wonder how much of these reactions (especially the positive ones) are due to what people hope the game is and what it seems to aspire to be versus reactions based on the actual game and content itself. Meaning, how much of it is "I really want this game to be awesome, therefore it all stokes my fires".
 
Personally, I have absolutely no positive expectations for Borderlands and fear it really will be a big let-down for most people. If it really lives up to the hype, I'll be more than eager to hand over my cash and give it a go once we've seen what it's really truly all about. And if I have a good time, I'll probably end up having a couple copies of it (one for 360 and one for PC). "

I'm actually ignorant of the process used to determine GOTY and exactly what it encompasses, because it seems numerous games are labeled as GOTY. Is there a GOTY per platform? Or per genre? Or can anyone call their game GOTY? I was wondering this same thing earlier (becuase I bought a copy of LBP GOTY edition yesterday with Amazon's 3-for-2 sale to replace my stolen copy, along with Prototype and Infamous).

I'm not sure how those numbers are derived, precisely (do only recent pre-orders count toward a title or all pre-orders, ever?), but I agree it looks like they're going to do well, financially. Whether a lot of those buying the game will look back upon the game positively a few days, weeks, or months down the line remains to be seen. Assassin's Creed had very high sales, yet probably more than half of those who played it look back on it and think "wow, that was painfully repetitive and boring" -- including myself, who couldn't even force myself to finish the game.  More interesting, to me, is that Dragon Age is much further down the list than Borderlands (behind even NBA 2K10 and FIFA Soccer 2K10). Of course, so is Forza 3.  I guess we'll start to get some answers in another four days. :) "

I just realized that I envisioned a game pretty much exactly like this when I was 12, I wanted a game like this...now I'm not so sure I'm that into it.

 
I'll pass. rather play Uncharted 2.  Kinda reminds me of Fallout a little. 

the game looks to be quite fun! i just hope it is as fun playing alone as it would be with friends in co-op!

I don't really like how you have to look down and point at every individual drop, then hit the button to pick it up. With this being such a loot heavy game, that's going to get a bit tedious. I wish it would just automatically pick up ammo when you walk over it, and only make you aim and hit a button to pick up weapons.
