Quick Look: Carmageddon: Reincarnation

I'm British and I thought this game was lame, the only reason it sold was because the media made a big deal out of it. I bet Hatred sells a million just on the back of the dumb uproar against the first trailer.

I don't see why this needs to exist other than trying to cash in on a name people are nostalgic for. They'll quickly realise it sucks and will move on, this IP will fade into nothing like Duke Nukem. This game doesn't even have a sense of speed, it just looks slow as hell.

Time to dig my Roxette CD and run over some people.

I saw Jeff and Drew's Periscope videos when they were out on the street, but I didn't know the fire alarm had gone off while recording a video. When that metallic screech started going off while watching this, I had to do a quick search to make sure it wasn't my apartment building.

I remember absolutely loving Carmageddon back in the day. Looking at this I don't really think the problem is that it's "of it's time", it's actually that it gets heavily outcompeted these days. Sure, we don't see a lot of big console games that play to this audience, but if you look at flash/phone games there are plenty of games that play on the same sensibilities.

I guess in some way you could say it's "of it's time" because back then a stupid little game like this could be a hit, while these days everything has to either be these massive projects or charming indie games.

I feel there was an unfinished or something of this on this site, but I don't see it anywhere. I wanted to watch the first one of these videos, anyone remember where it is? Was it an unprofessional fridays? I clicked on the gamepage and only has this video.

The handling was, and still is, pretty floaty and weird though.

This game is made not 30 minutes from where i live on a small island off the south coast of England.

My problem is who just races around the track in this game? 99/100 times matches were won killing the other cards when I played it back in the day.

It's a quick and dirty Paint job, but he fits right in

The thing with Carmageddon is that its just a big stupid sandbox, to actually "race" is the worst way to play the game (and I am disappointed to see they've introduced events that force you to race). Just try and kill all the other drivers, explore the map, find a rollercoaster or a bob sleigh course and try to ride them with your car, and put yourself on the railroad track with pinball mode activated only to watch the train bounce around the map like crazy.

THAT is what's great about Carmageddon.

I played a bit of Carmageddon 2 at a friend's house, and the most fun we had was trying to get on the roofs of buildings, or squeeze the car into tight spaces, or otherwise just kind of goof off and find our own fun.

Kind of like what GTA would eventually become, even moreso when you think about the crazy modifiers that you'd pick up along the way.

I loved Carma 1 & 2 and this looks fun too, apart from the actual racing bit Dan was doing.

If only the fire was real and they didn't have to quick look this awful fucking game.

They seem to have gotten the feel of the originals down. The reason those old games were liked so much was because the physics and damage modelling on the cars was so far ahead of their times. Carmageddon 2 was the one everyone liked.

Most of the quicklook gameplay was just driving around getting checkpoints, while complaining it was boring, which was never the way this game was intended to be played.

I'd totally buy this if I had a decent pc. Who the fuck just races in these games :) this just looks exactly like what I would've expected from a new carmageddon game. Jeff and Dan are clearly not interested in this, thats ok, Im sure its clear to everyone what kind of game this is if they played and liked the old ones.

I find the argument "You're not supposed to race! That's not how you play this game!" pretty weak, because if you're taking a racing game -- with race cars, race tracks, checkpoints for racing round said track, and progressing through the game by winning a race -- then saying "racing is doing-it-wrong", well, how does that even make sense?. :b

I agree with the GB crew -- this game was cool as hell to my 13 year-old self, but as I grew up, my tastes matured. I tried watching an old "Beavis and Butthead" episode a few months ago and just cringed at the "humor" which, 20-odd years ago, I thought was hilarious. I tried playing the original Carmageddon Splat Pack off GOG a few months ago and, similarly, lost interest about an hour-and-a-half in.

Good on the people who wanted to see a modern version of this game and more power to them if they enjoy it, but for me, Carmageddon falls into the same category as Duke Nuke 'Em; best left as fond memories from an earlier age.

Maybe racing around the checkpoints isn't the "correct" way to play the game but hunting down 700 pedestrians looks pretty freaking boring too.

@dasakamov: Except it's not a "racing game", often categorized as "vehicular combat", in which you're not supposed to just race, especially when the AI is doing what they're supposed to be doing and trying to kill each other. Just like demolition derby isn't racing, neither is this.

@maitom "Destruction Derby" games don't have race tracks with time-based checkpoints. Obviously, the developers fully intended for some players to "just race" if they wanted to; otherwise, it would be pretty brainless to say "You can absolutely beat the game by winning races" and then pull a complete 180 and say "PSYCH! You can't REALLY race in this game!"
