You should take a look at DOA2 (and 3 and 4) again, nothing much has changed at all in terms of tastefulness. DOA2/3/4 are just as fighting-focused as this game is, and in the fighting games, the 'physics' were never actually that bad. People were just weirded out at the time because character model physics hadn't been done before at all, and DOA1 looked really tacky.

DOA being known as 'softcore porn' is a weird case of 'everyone says it, so that's what everyone sees'. They disregard the 99.9% of the game which is technical fighting in stylish environments with a 50% male cast, and focus their thoughts entirely on the 0.01% where a partially-nude Kasumi clone is shown in a cloning vat for a few seconds in the intro movie.

It also has pretty much the only remaining urban legend that plenty of people still genuinely believe since the days of 'Mew is under a truck in the Japanese version of Pokemon Green' and 'the nude code in Tomb Raider'.

"The higher you set your age to, the more the breasts bounce! If you set your age in the options to 99, they bounce SO MUCH!", and "In DOAX on Xbox, if you complete the game really fast, you can unlock a way to play nude!". The age thing was never true (setting your age/country was just for your profile), and the 'nude code' for DOAX was an EGM April Fools joke. It amazes me how many people are still convinced that both of these are true, I was watching some DOA5 streams last night and the 'age = 99' thing kept popping up in the chat from people who were absolutely convinced it was real.

You know I'm old, and I don't get the yelling and screaming about this game. it has it's characters and aesthetics. It apparently has a convoluted and developed story and timeline. It is of course a soap -opera of sorts, but I get a kick out of it, including the sexual weirdness. Some posters are also stating it does it's job admirably as a fighting game. Duly noted. The little bit I saw here(As much as I'm probably ever going to see) cracked me up and intrigued me. What beaten path are we not following here? And the tiggers!!!!!

I think it may have something to do with it being all CG instead of a real girl. Jeff has stated many times that he finds CG eroticism distasteful.

I thought maybe that timeline was separated out by character? Like the characters are in columns and the line connects the order in which you play them. So the horizontal stuff at the beginning is when you play as one character and then come back to them later.

I've only seen half this quick look, so unsure of how accurate that is.

I have to make the tiger come out every morning. It's the only way I'm able to get through the day.

Is it weird that I kind of want to get this? The story mode looks bananas! Plus, I actually have an affinity for the DOA fighting system, and like Jeff said, this seems pretty accessible (which is key for me when it comes to a fighting game). I played DOA Dimensions on the 3DS, and had a good time with that. I think the last game in the series I tried before that was DOA2 on the PS2, but I don't remember much.

Yeeeeeeeeah, Bloody Roar! I played so much of the second game on PS1 and a bit of the one that came out on Gamecube. Bakuryu the mole was definitely my favorite of the series. Clearly, we are kindred fighting game spirits.

If I see a sale sometime soon, I'll probably get DOA5. I hesitate to buy anything at full price at this point, games seem to get cheaper pretty quick. I was looking on Amazon @ DOA5 and noticed that Tekken Tag Tournament 2 from last week is already at $50.

Man, I love me a good fighting game story mode! That soap opera kinda stupidity, I mean. There are very few reasons to start a fight that don't come off seeming stupid... but stupid AND entertaining, though. It's probably the pro-wrestling fan in me that appreciates the melodrama, but still - I dig what DOA5's story mode is bringing to the table! How can you not enjoy stuff like... I don't know, two people in a mall, and one bumps into the other, knocking down their cell phone -- IT'S ON!

This actually looks kind of fun. I'm not very good at fighting games, so maybe it's just that it seems kind of easy to get into, but the fighting system just looks fun. I still don't care much for the DoA character design, but the story seems hilariously ridiculous and they at least look a little less creepy now. Maybe I'll pick this up when it gets cheap.

That's a lovely defense, except for the part where you can pick from 4 different pairs of panties for Sarah to wear under her dress. Not over it, under it. For when you want her to kick real high. It's practically a hentai game, which is fine if you're into that sort of thing, but don't pretend like DOA is at all comparable to the objectification of women in games at large.

Hey while I agree that DOA is certainly a fan service heavy series it is certainly not tantamount to a hentai game.

Arguing either end of the spectrum is foolish really, if I'm honest I wish it was less ridiculous with it's boob physics and bust sizes, but it is a long way from porn.

The Xtreme series is much less worthy of defense specifically for being poorly made games and for appealing almost exclusively based on titillation.

I guess the DOA series lives in a other parallel world, almost same world as us...
