Quick Look: Destiny (PS3)

It is my FATE, my CALLING to watch this Quick Look

I was really curious how these last generation versions of Destiny were going to hold up. Not nearly as bad as I expected.

Seems like there's just way too much Destiny videos lately, and not enough interest swelling to support its existence on the site. It's a bit overkill.

For a second I forgot what a PS3 was.

What with Persona 5 being on the PS4, the only reason i'm still using my PS3 is.... Tales of Xillia 2?

Oh wow this is very unexpected. I'm actually playing this on 360 and have done all the content and haven't had any problems. No framerate issues or anything, it's run perfectly and looks totally competent. You don't need a new console at all to play this game.

I guess everyone has the same bounties because those were all the same bounties I had available to me also, and I'm on Xbox not Playstation so guess It's just game wide.

@zeeman155: There's an Unfinished, a QL and this QL. The two streams were just streams that Jeff and Brad did on their personal Twitch channels and I don't think they expect those to do much traffic on the site. Doesn't seem that much for what is still the biggest release of the year.

Anyways, the loading times are so short on this compared to the current gen consoles, that's the most surprising thing. The game looks alright here.

You guys talk about glimmer not being useful. Personally I've been using glimmer to stock up on ammo packs, especially special and heavy ones. It's nice in a strike to be able to use those to unload more rockets into a boss. They have a 5 minute cooldown though so you can't just chain them. Still better then nothing.

@jaina_solo_: I don't know, there is a lot still coming out for the PS3. I'm playing my PS3 now more than ever. Fairy Fencer F, Ar nosurge, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Natural Doctrine, Tears to Tiara II,Assassin's Creed: Rogue and a whole lot more are coming soon to the PS3.

Good news: The gameplay holds up together with the just as great art design, on these 7-8 year old consoles

Bad news: The beta content was a 100% accurate representation of what you do in the whole game

I'm really disappointed by what I've seen so far of Destiny so I'm still holding off on jumping to the next generation, but I'm really impressed by how good this looks on 360 & PS3.

When the price comes down, I'll pick this up on 360 and give the game a go.

I've really been impressed by the quality of the 360 version, except for the whole game itself part. That hasn't really impressed me.

I've been playing it on PS3, and other than a slight visual downgrade (mostly in character detail and vegetation I think, the environment details seem to be about the same) it's totally fine. You also get the PS4 version for free with it, and it's usually cheaper than only buying the PS4 version, so. Yeah.

By the way, even though the Destiny Upgrade FAQ says you need to get the upgrade on an activated PS4 by January, you can actually cash it in on the PC Playstation store too, if you don't have a PS4 already but want to make sure you'll have the PS4 version if you get one down the line.

If you bought the Digital Deluxe Edition for PS3 for example, you'll only have to go to the Digital Deluxe Edition PS4 page on the PC store, and it'll be listed for free. If you buy it (for 0 dollars), it'll be permanently added to your library regardless of it you own a PS4 or not.

It's hardly surprising that it just looks like the PS4 version at half the framerate and at a lower resolution. The new consoles aren't really powerful enough to do much more than that.

All this talk of having to level up for raids and so on just confirms that loot and levelling systems are ruining games.

In the majority of games now, they're just used to stretch out the existing content and keep people playing; not unlike free-to-play games. The only real difference is that they aren't selling an XP doubler yet, or letting you buy a "pro weapons pack" etc.

Imagine if Destiny ditched the loot and levelling mechanics (maybe keep the cosmetic options) and had a proper story progression moving from one level to the next, rather than lots of repetitive missions going back to the same maps over and over.

Sure, it might only be 8-10 hours of gameplay instead of 30+ hours of grinding, but it would also have been a much better game.

That's not to say you can't build a good loot game, but forcing these mechanics into everything now just sucks.

Jeff's comment about the graphics nailed it for me. The PS3 version is competent. But with everything that I have heard about Destiny, it would benefit me the most to pay for the PC version with high graphics and performance. Nothing can improve it's alleged problems by PC and the PC3 version would be a step back, though again not a critical one. Glad to hear that ,actually. Budgets can be strapped.

I am still thinking of getting this game.

The PS3 version looks mostly fine, it's just that awful aliasing and the jaggyness of the PS3.

That's probably because this is like the seventeenth video they did for Destiny. Even if it was a game of the year contender, they would run out of things to say by that time.

And yeah, this game is kind of a bummer.

Actually, I think the current gen version still runs at 30 frames per second, but it's a more solid 30, whereas this version drops sometimes. Never too dramatically to make it unplayable, though.

Looks pretty ok, visually, through an internet video.

Looks pretty great on PS3, for what it is. I guess I shouldn't be surprised anymore. Devs have done a great job at extending the lifetime of these old consoles. Kinda tempted to buy this version as I don't have a new gen console.

Jeez. This game looks pretty dull, glad I cancelled my pre-order after the beta.

I'm not a fan of this game, but why have ANOTHER Quick Look in which Brad and Jeff sigh for the better part of an hour while begrudgingly playing a game they clearly don't like. What is there to be gained from doing this aside from giving Jeff the chance to put down the game some more while complaining non-stop about having to keep playing it?

Believe me, Destiny is NOT a great game and Jeff made some great points in his actual review; but you guys already said your piece. Why don't you guys just...you know, stop?

Watching all this, I can't help but think how great a Mass Effect version of a game like this would be.

They'd even have the initial reactions to this game to make adjustments, though I suspect Bungie will be making similar adjustments down the line.

I think the point of the XP is more a way to control level progression and obviously to build out your character abilities and such. Speaking of which, I dunno if it's different for other classes, but for my Hunter there's a section of the tree where you can just straight up alter your primary attributes. Not the stuff that affects cooldowns, but attributes like armor, recovery (hp regen), and agility (movement speed).

I haven't actually gotten to a point where I can change it up yet, but if the other classes have different set values for those then there might be more meaningful differences to the classes besides their abilities.

PS3 is just a lot blurrier basically. Also holy crap, if the PS3 loading is faster than the PS4, that's nuts. The PS3 loading feels pretty long at times.

On a purely technical level, this is one of the best PS3 versions of a multi-platform game I've ever played, especially given how different the architecture of the PS3 is.

In regards to gearing up, Destiny has quickly become my 'podcast' game.

I really enjoy running the Strike Playlists for Vanguard rep and gear drops, because it's so simple. It's not like an MMO where you have to rely on others playing their class and idiots rushing... It just works.

Currently I'm at level 23.

Sure, there's not really a lot to say about the game. It's not like Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate, which is a game with incredible depth, hours upon hours of content and a compelling story with an engaging narrative. You need to commit yourself to understand that game though, so it might not be for everyone.

It gives people a chance to see the last-gen version in motion. There's value in that -- probably, for folks whose PS3/360 is still their primary console, the most valuable Destiny video on the site. No one's making you watch this video, you know!

This is a weak counterpoint. It doesn't actually refute or negate any of his criticisms, and it's pretty obvious he's already watched it, so telling him he's not forced to is useless at best.

His original point was that the video is unnecessary and had no value. I argued that it DOES have value to others and that he wasn't forced to watch a video that had no value to him and whose mere existence bothered him. I think it's a perfectly good counterpoint. People who complain about things that aren't made with them in mind are being ridiculous.

At the start Jeff says that there were a lot of people asking about what the the last gen version of Destiny looked like.

The PS3 version of Destiny is a lot like what the porn version would look like. There is a lot of Vaseline smeared on that camera.

I was shocked at how hideous the graphics were in the 360 version. I guess they really had to trim it down to keep the loading times and framerate up. But MAN. It's so ugly. Sad for such a pretty game on PS4.

I wonder if this would of worked better as a free to play game and if it would of been better received. I haven't played it but this looks super boring I tend not to play with other people but solo looks super boring

I haven't checked recently, but I think it's funny that I rarely if ever see anybody post 'first' as the first comment. Back in the day when there were quests a bunch of people would always post that. Weird.

I have a nit to pick with Bethesda and their Skyrim UI. Or not so much them, but all other developers who looked at that UI and decided, hey let's not make the UI look like it fits in the game in any way and just do the most bare bones block letters and shapes possible.

I remember a time when UI's used to look cool. ;-;

Pretty sure this'll take Giant Bomb's award for most disappointing game this year..
