It's incredible they don't even introduce who's speaking on the developer commentary (and that that random node didn't work). At the very least there should be a subtitle to say who's speaking, even if they can't subtitle everything.

Is this worth playing if you haven't played Duke Nukem before?

I wish Gearbox would make another Brothers in Arms game. Hell's Highway ended on a sort of cliffhanger/heavily implied sequel. I also haven't forgotten about Aliens: Colonial Marines either.

Duke Nukem 3D was brilliant back in the day. It really set the path for more realistic environments in shooters. It was the first one I remember playing where it wasn't in some weird space station or some other construct that just served as "a level" and nothing more. Realistic-looking environments have more character.

That being said, I don't feel like I in good conscience can support Randy Pitchford after what he did to SEGA and that's on top of being just... lame and making games that suck.

I hope the Duke Nukem brand escapes Gearbox some day.

It might also be worth mentioning that the new episode also has all new music made by the same guy who did the original Duke 3d soundtrack.

As long as you understand what FPS games were in the early to mid 90's on a general level, I think so?

This isn't a perfect port, and it's missing all the expansions that were included in the 2013 Megaton Edition (which was removed from PSN and Steam last year), but in general it plays a little better than that port did. Both versions had things that felt a bit off compared to the community source ports like Eduke32, but I think it's very playable.

Man, because of games like Doom and Quake, I found Duke 3D to be really slow and boring. Plus the level designs were nowhere near as good.

@ghost_cat: While Duke3D is indeed a slower game (compared to Quake mostly), I wouldn't call the level design nowhere near as good as Doom or Quake. Duke3D has some solid and consistent level design with a good deal of interaction and it is decent at giving you the feel that you are in a 'real' world where Doom and Quake are very 'gamey' in terms of design and aesthetics.

Doom had some real stinkers in there where the level was basicly just a room full of monsters. Quake has pretty great overal leveldesign, but aesthetically that game is a mess at times.

Yeah, I'm sure I read somewhere that it's still in pre-production, although that was a few months ago now. Lets hope they push ahead with it and do the series justice.

Always got the impression the Brothers in Arms games were Randy own special project. Let's hope we hear something eventually, that said I'm also super excited to see what they do with Borderlands next.

Yeah, me too. I wonder if they will push ahead with the whole "Borderworlds" idea. I've not heard anymore about it, but it sounded really promising.

Oh, also Gearbox took down other versions of Duke Nukem 3D, like the Megaton Edition, a while ago to line up this lesser but more expensive re-release of the game.

So is this one of those few good games Gearbox has put out then?

I kid I kid.

Man that commentary seems ill-conceived and generally uninteresting...

As far as the controller stuff, idk if there was some setting in "controller config" or... wow I was going to say go into controller properties but I didn't realize you were playing on a ps4 until you went into the system menu, that's a real weird bug.

This port as a whole is abysmal; missing several expansions that Megaton edition had (and was 10 bucks cheaper) The audio quality is terrible, especially the pistol sounds, the dev commentary is halfassed, the new episode is alright and so is the new music but that is all you can say. I don't know what the problem was with that one commentary not working, but it worked before and after this video was recorded. The biggest sin of all though is a new Duke line of him simply saying "Bazinga!"

Also, the playback came from the original XBLA port.

AFAIK, it's out of pre-prod and nearing a point where you should hear some talk about it very soon.

I played through most of this game with some mod that remade the game in 3D a few years ago. I thought that was pretty fun, but I also don't play a lot of first person shooters.

I don't think I like what Duke Nukem is actually like as a character. I just like the idea of him in my head as a boisterous, idiot asshole and really like his cheesy action-hero design. I've wanted him to be a character class in Borderlands for a while, thinking it'd be the best use of the IP outside of actually making some sort of good game with him as the protagonist.

Being a character-ability based shooter with light rpg mechanics it is, along with fighting games and various Moba-likes, fertile ground for diving back into a previously established character's legacy and developing something new based on that.

Much as I'd think it'd be fun if Duke Nukem was a part of something good (again?). I don't think I'd be prepared to support this game just in the hopes of it happening.

Christ. As a fan of Duke 3D this game looks like hot fucking garbage. The Megaton Edition was at least decent. Gearbox have let themselves down in a big way.

Nope, he isn't. Typical Bitchford.

You know what's even more unbelievable than DNF being the sequel to DN3D? DN3D being the sequel to DN2. I really wish more people remembered that the first two Duke games existed. Sure, the first game is a bit rough, but the second one is genuinely great.

I like to imagine that non responsive stripper in the window was actually a mannequin and Duke just can't tell the difference anymore. In a few years he'll be a sad, confused old man wandering through Sears trying to slip some cash to the bra displays.

@beachthunder: As someone who didn't grow up with consoles, those games were my platformer jams. It would've been cool if they were included as well (original Duke3D did!). Would've been even more awesome if the game started with a DOS ass install menu with the choice to start either Duke 1, 2, or 3D.

And normal sound quality.

And all the official content included.

Sigh...

I don't understand why they're so down on this. At the very least, those new levels look pretty cool. It seems like a decent port, and does it really matter that you don't know who's talking in the commentary? I mean, it'd be nice, sure. I just fail to see how this is bad in any way.

As someone who was not playing games when the first Duke Nukem 3D was released I'm pretty interested in this, but the dev commentary is pretty rough. Hope they fix it or else I don't see myself buying this.
