Wow that "biting social commentary" on present day law enforcement was really dumb.

Fun preview- Baffled though that the guys can't put an ounce of effort in before Quick Looks to have facts straight for information like platform availability, cost, release date, etc. At least Brad took the five seconds at the end to clarify it.

Man. I might be one of the only people left in the world who really wants to see a new Duke Nukem game get made, but I also really wish that some other company, pretty much any company other than Gearbox, had the license.

This is the worst kind of quicklook, where Jeff sucks at a game so he complains about it the entire time.

For as much as they complain, they don't mention the biggest problem with this release: the awful audio compression (listen to those terrible tin sounds in the multiplayer segment).

I think Gearbox should get major props for making an entirely new campaign with a new weapon and enemy. Stuff like that is so rad for fans. Would love to see more anniversary ports do faithful additions like that.

The developers' commentary on the Pig Cops being relevant today seems like a real stretch. Also Brad, Duke Nukem Forever came out in 2011. I remember Jeff sounding really sick during the QL too, because Forever is so bad, it makes people feel ill.

Now the real question is, where's our Duke Nukem/Big the Cat crossover game? Surely we deserve the ultimate Jon St. John experience at some point.

Yuuuuuup. I mean, Duke 3D is one of my favorite shooters ever, but Blood was even better. Now that's a game that could use some developer commentary and a "True 3D" mode.

I'd say Shadow Warrior could as well, but the commentary would just be "So... this bit was a little racist. Sorry about that." over and over.

I still love these games. I even really liked DNF for what it was (which was a few years late but still a decent shooter with crazy levels which is what you play Duke Nukem for!).

I may get this, but I don't know. I have a bunch of different versions of Duke 3D already, but the modernized 3D engine is a decent selling point. I don't think there's a mod for that.

Maybe I'll get this when it goes on sale for 2$ or something.

Well, besides the first level, I've found that the final boss is also memorable. Not only that, but there are hidden texts on walls everywhere in this game that you could see via night vision googles or emitting light by shooting.

That tiny sound bit about the sick fire effects was so dumb its great and was the last thing that convinced me to buy this as soon as it hits gog. I would prefer a game like this to appear on that store rather than to purchase it on Steam.

It's hard to believe that Shadow Warrior became something better in the 2000's and Duke Nukem: Forever exists.

@wandrecanada: i think theyre trying something out. the psvr stream had a hot, fresh vrodeo logo accompanying it. trying to strengthen their brands i guess!

I am betting they are going to restructure videos and have a strong "shows" format that will use the logos. Like "QLs", "VRodeo", "Ranking of Fighters" etc.

I love developer commentary in game as you go through it. Honestly I would half buy this game just for that if the commentary seemed to be good. Only to the point where they just clicked on it though so who knows.

Update:

Hmm... hearing some if now maybe not...

@quigia: Don't think there's really any way to fix the commentary since it seems Randy just decided to do an impromptu let's play and left the developers to figure out how the heck to use it. Terribly misconceived idea I think.

Another remaster with inferior sound compared to the original. Wtf is up with that lately.

I bet it has something to do with how the audio is compressed and/or streamed with the new vs old tech. Probably higher bit rate, but more compression. Like what happens if you render a crisp MIDI song as a low quality MP3. Real shame.

@icyeyes: I think it's just the interpolation. Every other version of Duke3D just uses the raw uninterpolated audio.

Making mirrors in the Build engine was weird and way more complicated than hitting the "make mirror" button: You had to make a vast room behind the mirror that could be "seen" from every angle in the room you were in. If you didn't make a room big enough you'd get the old "hall of mirrors" glitch effect (aptly enough).

Related: I miss using the Build engine so much; I was a little bummed when A Tournament of Lies shat on Blood so much recently.

@geirr said:

I came here to say exactly this (among other things, obviously). I can't believe it took until page 2 of the comments. For shame, Giant Bomb community. For shame.

@ravey: Not exactly sure what you mean by "interpolation" but I think we're essentially talking about the same thing; raw vs compressed audio formats.

@icyeyes: Not quite. It probably uses the original data, but it's processing/interpolating the audio to make it sound less harsh, resulting in muffled audio. The same audio being played without any interpolation would produce harsher/crispier audio.

When using low quality recordings, it's a matter of preference: do you use the original sample points for more accurate sound, or do you interpolate them to make it sound less harsh at higher sample rates?

Someday Gearbox will put out another product that isn't a broken pile of garbage, but today is not that day.

broken is a bit of exaggeration.

its mostly fine and the real 3d helps it play better. I dont know if its gonna be worth 20 bucks.

Duke Nuke Forever I believe came out in 2011 I think. I actually enjoyed my time playing that game. It may not have been an amazing game but it's Duke Nukem and I'm glad I beat it. As for this release of Duke it may not have the expansions but I feel the stoned commentary and new episode are really cool. Would love to own this on my PS4 to play again. Hopefully a retail release would come that would be awesome to have on my shelf.

the only time I got to speak to Ryan Davis was at PAX East when Duke Nukem Forever was playable for the first time. We talked about how the demo was kind of shitty and that Gearbox was probably just trying to get it out the door so they could do something with the license later.

@wynnduffy: Yeah. You look at Doom and Shadow Warrior and how retro FPS's can be modernized in an innovated way, and then you see a bad rehash of Duke Nukem and it's just depressing. Gearbox should've paid Nightdive to make an actually decent version instead of trying to do it themselves.

Be careful, last time I criticized one of the staff members (said Brad was being a bummer in a QL) I got exploded for two weeks. My membership here turned into feeling like a part of something fun and entertaining into something less, needless complaining is not what I think any of us come to GB for.

@jeff seemed to just be taking the piss at this game for no particular reason.

(my controller is broken so its the game's fault, aiming and weapon select isn't as good as the PC version (DUH), Uh oh--no subtitles for commentary tracks and one of the billions of them isn't activating! DISLIKE!!!)

I expected this to be Jeff being an a-hole and Randy Pitchford screaming Trump-like nonsense into a mic because of some of these comments.

Jeff mostly brought up technical issues or time-and-place oddities, and even said some nice stuff about random aspects of this game and the original. The commentary, when not awkward, was interesting (subtitles or an option to lower all game sound when one of the clips is playing would really help).

I might get this during a Steam sale if the price is a couple bucks just for the commentary - with no nostalgia for the original I kind of don't care enough to pay anywhere near full price.
