[Desire to pursue Lu bu past Hulao Gate intensifies]

Fire Emblem Warriors gave me my semi-annual musou fix. I’d be more interested in DW9 if it didn’t look so rough. FEW was rough on Switch but at least being cartoony, I could get over it. I loved the weapon triangle and ordering heroes around the map in FEW. It looks like that’s not in this game (the ordering)? That’s unfortunate.

I can see what people like about these games. The combat system is deeper than it appears at first and can vary wildly between characters, but also there is a lot of strategy involved in decisions about where to attack, which forts to conquer, etc.

Suggestion: Giant Bomb stops doing videos on Dynasty Warriors altogether. None of them are into the games and fans just get annoyed by their lack of knowledge/enthusiasm/ingredient x. People like me who don't care about the series obviously won't miss the QLs, either.

(also, every time I see another one of these games I get more angry at their popularity, but that's more of a personal hang-up)

I'm not into this series at all, but I agree with what a lot of the people here are saying. If you're going to take a look at one of these games, maybe actually take a look at the systems and see what's actually happening in the game. Instead it seems like you guys are just randomly running around talking about how stupid the series is.

Like I said, I'm not into the series, so maybe that's all there is to it, but judging from the menus and what other people are saying, there's more to it than that.

Sure. I'll watch a Quick Look for the ninth Dynasty Warriors game, why not.

I don't really agree with the accusation that they're shitting on the game/franchise. They poke fun at it a bit and they're clearly not super into it, but it at least seems like they're trying to understand and respect it.

That said, I do agree that they could have done a better job of explaining and showing off what was new and different about this game. However, I'm not really that bothered to be honest because I kinda didn't expect them to anyway. I don't know if this is good or bad, but this video is exactly what I expected it to be. A very very very light overview of DW9 that I can throw on in the background.

Jim Sterling is my goto source for Musou games anyway so I'm waiting to see what he has to say about it.

@babychoochoo: Ol' Jimmy hates DW9 due to it removing certain weapons and changing too much. I wouldn't count on an accurate review from him this time.

@yukeake: Sengoku Basara 3 was localized under the name Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes. Fully voiced, too.

Honestly, I'm not surprised you don't know about this, it wasn't advertised well. It's not the best entry in the series anyways, 4th entry (and it's expansion) really steps-up the mechanics. Still, if you are (or someone) is entirely against playing non-English games, 3 is for you/them.

Googling "raindrops basara", should yield all the info needed to play the Japanese versions.

one of the other games that showed promise in this genre around the same time as 99 knights was the Kingdom Under Fire series. the first on or two of them on the OG xbox were pretty good but suffered imo from the failing of the rest in that, for me if there were just a bit more complexity to the movesets it would keep my attention. a block and or parry along with more than just a button press for the special moves and I would buy this more often than every few to see if they have improved.

Dan and Alex are a great combo. Both quirky personalities balance out perfectly together!

By the way, why not show the different stuff? Fishing and Hunting? We've all seen the large group killing.

I feel like the Last Samurai gets a bad rap. It doesn't really paint Tom Cruise's character as the ultimate hero who saves Japan.

I like the footsoldier at 26:15 that just falls over, pretending to be dead. That's what I would do.

Also, how many "irate DW fans" do you reastically see ranting on forums about a lack of Quick Looks?

Reading the comments here, I hope you guys do Quick Looks for every Dynasty Warriors-adjacent game that ever comes out and continue to say such vitriolic (and I hear uninformed) comments as, "I guess I could see why people like these". It's endlessly funny.

Worth noting that on the latest Waypoint Radio episode, noted Dynasty Warriors enthusiast Austin Walker said he was having a bad time with this installment due to frame drops into the tens on a PS4 Pro, along with uninspired open world design and low production values in the story.

It's also funny when they shit on shitty games like this in the way only they can.

If you hate the game before even playing it,if you think it is beneath you, dont do a video on it, why put up with the pain? It would be a good change to not turn any genre that you dont appreciate or understand into a joke video, there's hundreds of shill youtubers for that.

I'd be down for an anime adaptation of Dynasty Warriors where most of the characters are well-endowed females in skimpy clothing beating the shit out of each other.

Amazingly this looks like it strips out anything that was likable and charming about these games.

I'm not the only one experiencing these tiny audio glitches/skips, right? They only occur on East videos and they're reproducible by rewinding and playing the same part over again. It's been going on for quite some time, too.

Yikes, the visuals do not look great. The way the lighting isn't casting shadows makes the player character looks like he was green-screened into a PS2 game or something.

@apothaeos: It is amazing to see subcribers being in a fit because of the way this QL turned out. I suppose it is all well and good until it is your beloved franchise that is put to the torch.

Apparently in this game you just beat the crap out of him in front of the gate.

The Last Samurai is amazing and is not about Tom Cruise saving Japan. He is our conduit into the culture.

@bearpawb: So lets examine the gameplay within those first 5 minutes:

There are talking heads, they are terribly voiced and don't even attempting to lip-sync.

The environment is filthy, they aren't joking about it looking like a PS2 game. It's not like they've been forced into some technical compromises, some of the best looking games of 2017 were Open world.

Running forwards and immediately encountering an inexplicable collision glitch with open air.

NPCs pop-in from nowhere immediately in-front of the camera.

Horse similarly pops-in from nowhere.

Despite being stood immediately adjacent to the horse it still takes three attempts for the game not to hurdle you over it.

Hostile NPCs still stand around in formation-less blobs and react to the Player getting close to them... eventually.

Swinging the weapon hits half a dozen enemies in one go - but NEVER friendly troops. No tactical considerations required, just keep spamming that button.

At minute five they start digging into the menus. I'm not going to bring those up, Perhaps it's a rich RPG system in there? But that doesn't impact my impression of the moment-to-moment combat.

I totally agree with you that moving to Openworld is a really cool improvement behind the scenes, it's a big part of what impressed me about BotW and MHW recently and I'm glad that Japan is catching up to something which the West did a decade ago. That said, like the early Western releases, the Openworld seems to just exist to reduce load times rather than offer anything new mechanically. The world traversal looked pretty dull, with a slow horse, and ugly environments, and the single squad skirmishes and hunting events don't sound appealing in the slightest.

I hope Dynasty Warriors gets it's breakout moment - like Monster Hunter World has managed - but this doesn't seem to be the one.

Since @danryckert is into anime lately, here is all you need to know about Lu Bu in one scene. The series is Sōten Kōro from 2009, if anyone is interested. I don't think it's very good overall, but this scene is still excellent. Sadly no english subs for this clip, but you don't really need them. :)

I've always made fun of the series and I bought 99 nights on 360 back in the day because of the hype and didn't like it which confirmed my dissdain for this type of game but I like DQ Heroes 2 which is this type of game so I am considering getting into this series.
