Hard Sci-Fi is basically trying to imagine what the future will look like and tries to extrapolate from all kinds of sciences and how society will develop as a result.

It wasn't really a spoiler until they specified which person they talked about, which they only did because they were arguing about whether or not it was a spoiler. Bruce Willis was a ghost all along.

This episode contains spoilers ... of everything BUT the game.

I have zero interest in this game but this quick look discussion was great, if somewhat low-scifi because of Dan.

I liked Nex Machina, but didn't stick with it it as hard as I did with Super Stardust and Resogun, so I think I'll wait for a sale before grabbing this. Looks nice and the soundtrack seems as good as in every other HQ game.

Star Wars (Ep IV) is basically a Science Fantasy remake of Akira Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress.

Wasn't Dan a film major? Wouldn't that have come up?

Well it's been a week of Quick Looks that are actually quick so that's a plus. Listening to Dan try to talk about pop culture makes me want to put a gun in my mouth. The term "philistine" gets thrown around these days....yeah.

For anyone who cares, the book for screenwriters about the Hero's Journey Vinny mentions in this is the Writer's Journey by Christopher Vogler.

@danryckert Regarding spoilers: Everything is a spoiler. In one of the latest beastcast's you said that "There was a cool moment regarding Arya in the newest game of thrones episode, but i'm not gonna spoil it", but unfortunately that is , by itself, a spoiler. By acknowleding that the character is still alive, that removes any tension in ANY preceding scene where that character's life is in peril at a earlier point in the series, so that would be a big spoiler for newcomers to Game of Thrones.

So, yeah, even something as miniscule as that statement can be considered a pretty big spoiler. There was a great video uploaded on youtube that really breaks down that basically everything is a spoiler, but I can't find it. Maybe someone knows what video I am talking about.

Vinny is so mean to Dan in these videos, but I think Dan is in on the joke.

@liad: Yeah, seems you have to tiptoe and be vague as possible about everything nowadays otherwise "spoiler alert!" Too bad about that, because I sometimes like to know what a thing is about to some degree. (We've gotten to the point where talking about game mechanics in a new Souls game are considered spoiler territory!)

@vinny I think the screenwriting book you were thinking of is: Save the Cat!: The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need

It's worth noting, there's actually been a fair amount of pushback against the book in some sectors of the movie industry over the past few years. Too many fresh screenwriters were following it too literally (e.g. always have moment X at the 14 minute mark, moment Y at the 58 minute mark, etc.) and making scripts that were too cookie cutter even by Hollywood standards.

Dan you should read the Gunslinger. You can probably stop there as I’m not sure the rest of the series is for you, and Gunslinger works wonderfully on it’s own.

Maybe don't mention that you watched a pirated leaked episode of Game of Thrones.

I mean, it is social science fiction. It's a speculative high-concept scenario set significantly later than when it was written.

I will agree with Dan on the spoiler stuff, specially when it's about Game of Thrones, people talk about the episode the second it ends, I don't even need to read all the books (and watch the series) to know what is happening. You can escape from other spoilers from other media but GoT is impossible

And with that, I managed to get my first Game of Thrones spoiler. I somehow managed to avoid basically every spoiler up to this point, until this Quick Look.

I love when they do a quick look and end up with a philosophical discussion.

@danryckert you should watch Total Recall again if you can, I think it held up strangely well and you would like it. Watching it now, years later, makes it way better. Specially if we see it as an action-comedy instead of a serious action movie. Everything feels goofy and campy but in a good way and it's that Schwarzenegger shooting bad guys stereotype we all know and love. The story is actually not that complex, if you can enjoy and understand Bladerunner then you sure can understand Total Recall. Basically, it's the good kind of dumb.

I second this. A F&40s of the original Total Recall would be great.

Fucking Dan...

To be fair, Dan hadn't actually spoiled anything at the point that Vinny started telling him to stop spoiling stuff. He had just mentioned that resurrections were a thing with no specifics oh which characters, major or minor, it had happened to.

But... I can't even begin to explain what possessed him to double down at that point and just go into increasing detail on a major plot event from only last season (not "4 years ago").

It's especially grating because Dan himself has recently been talking about some hugely popular films he's been late to the party on.

Heard this game was ultra short. Speaking of science fiction the new xcom expansion comes out soon and it looks absolutely incredible.

You guys got it writing with high fantasy. High fantasy has magic up the ass. Low Fantasy on the other hand have more realistic settings.

With something like Game of Thrones that is essentially a cultural phenomenon, unfortunately Dan is correct.

Surely you've heard the story of how he never went to a single class, and turned in videos he had already made that wouldn't even pass muster on YouTube these days.

I really love Nex Machina, having fun with this as well but I just like the look and feel of Nex more.
