Quick Look: Putty Squad

"Squads before Quads." I nearly shot my drink out my nose when I heard that. Vinny is too much.

Claymates was a fun game. I liked that one.

I love how its pupils expand, this game looks terrible in a neat way. When it hits $15 ill be buying it.

Man. What a soulless game. It's funny to think this (well, the original) and DKC were contemporaries. No wonder DKC took the world by storm. Games like... like this made up most of the SNES's library I assume. Mediocre games which no one in their right minds would bring back.

Why was this remade? Who wants this?

Unlike LocoCycle, this game has an excuse for looking playing and sounding the way it does.
So it's got that going for it..

That punch animation makes me really happy.

Don't worry, you're totally justified. It's because it's not a "style" at all. It is the void, the complete lack of style. Everything rendered as simply as can be, a bare minimum of shading or texture, objects that just look as much like the basic representation of the object as possible with no regard for context or purpose. And all of that rendered in 3D only to be flattened into completely lifeless sprites with too few frames of animation to look right, no thought about where the objects would exist in the world as they were being made, everything just... completely lifeless, completely flat, completely pointless.

It's infuriating, is what it is. At least if it was still in 3D, there would be some degree of parallax to help distinguish objects from backgrounds. There might even be some subtle differences in lighting, or heaven forbid, some depth blur or fog. But nope. None of that went through anyone's head during the making of this game.

Make the objects, render the objects, put the objects on the screen.

Why god, you have truly forsaken us!

So who else noticed that those enemies wearing military hats are EXACTLY the same enemies as the aliens from Bubsy... Oh wait, the ones without helmets show that they have cat ears. It still looks really similar though.

Just in case you needed another reason to think this game is crap.

Can we discuss the total lack of apostrophe in "Doors Open"?

slow that idle animation down to about 5% speed and you would have a remarkably accurate cartoon portrayal of what my pet gecko looks like right when he wakes up in the evening (he's nocturnal). O..O

I rarely ever agree with Jeff on anything video game related, and that's never really bothered me but, somehow, knowing that he doesn't like Fawlty Towers is really rustling my jimmies.

Holy shit, thank you! This kind of shiny, clay-like mid-90's CG has always really bugged me, but before now I've never quite been able to articulate why.

I'm so glad they went with that screenshot for the thumbnail. Everything about this game looks like something that should have been released in the early nineties. Only it's a weird looking super high res version of weirdly bad and badly weird nineties game.

And I think it's super funny that Jeff paid 30 bucks for a disc version of this. Let's not forget Jeff also paid 50 bucks for Angry Birds on PS4. Money well spent I say.

I quite concur. This is very British, and very early-'90s Amiga. My first thoughts were of James Pond, more specifically.

I would also add that I really don't understand why this was made, nor for whom. It's not like they've created an homage de generic Amiga platformers with, I dunno, wit and self-awareness - they've just put something out that doesn't look like it was ever much good to begin with, twenty-fucking-years after the fact.
